Book excerpt: Viscous flow is treated usually in the frame of boundary-layer theory and as two-dimensional flow. Books on boundary layers give at most the describing equations for three-dimensional boundary layers, and solutions often only for some special cases. This book provides basic principles and theoretical foundations regarding three-dimensional attached viscous flow. Emphasis is put on general three-dimensional attached viscous flows and not on three-dimensional boundary layers. This wider scope is necessary in view of the theoretical and practical problems to be mastered in practice. The topics are weak, strong, and global interaction, the locality principle, properties of three-dimensional viscous flow, thermal surface effects, characteristic properties, wall compatibility conditions, connections between inviscid and viscous flow, flow topology, quasi-one- and two-dimensional flows, laminar-turbulent transition and turbulence. Though the primary flight speed range is that of civil air transport vehicles, flows past other flying vehicles up to hypersonic speeds are also considered. Emphasis is put on general three-dimensional attached viscous flows and not on three-dimensional boundary layers, as this wider scope is necessary in view of the theoretical and practical problems that have to be overcome in practice. The specific topics covered include weak, strong, and global interaction; the locality principle; properties of three-dimensional viscous flows; thermal surface effects; characteristic properties; wall compatibility conditions; connections between inviscid and viscous flows; flow topology; quasi-one- and two-dimensional flows; laminar-turbulent transition; and turbulence. Detailed discussions of examples illustrate these topics and the relevant phenomena encountered in three-dimensional viscous flows. The full governing equations, reference-temperature relations for qualitative considerations and estimations of flow properties, and coordinates for fuselages and wings are also provided. Sample problems with solutions allow readers to test their understanding.

The relative merits of interactive and global solution procedures are evaluation by comparing the viscous inviscid interaction solutions with noninteractive large domain solutions of only the viscous flow equations. Both methods yield satisfactory results, although the interaction solutions are found to be computationally more efficient for the cases considered. Book excerpt: A composite velocity procedure for the three-dimensional reduced Navier-Stokes equations is developed. In the spirit of matched asymptotic expansions, the velocity components are written as a combined multiplicative and additive composite of viscous like velocities (U, W) and pseudo-potential or inviscid velocities (phi sub x, phi sub y, phi sub z). The solution procedure is then consistent with both asymptotic inviscid flow and boundary layer theory. For transonic flow cases, the Enquist-Osher flux biasing scheme developed for the full potential equation is used. A quasi-conservation form of the governing equation is used in the shock region to capture the correct rotational behavior. This is combined with the standard nonconservation nonentropy generating form used in nonshock regions. The consistent strongly implicit procedure is coupled with plane relaxation to solve the discretized equations. Book excerpt: The book is concerned with mathematical modelling of supersonic and hyper sonic flows about bodies. Permanent interest in this topic is stimulated, first of all, by aviation and aerospace engineering. The designing of aircraft and space vehicles requires a more precise prediction of the aerodynamic and heat transfer characteristics. Together with broadening of the flight condition range, this makes it necessary to take into account a number of gas dynamic and physical effects caused by rarefaction, viscous-inviscid interaction, separation, various physical and chemical processes induced by gas heating in the intensive bow shock wave. The flow field around a body moving at supersonic speed can be divided into three parts, namely, shock layer, near wake including base flow, and far wake. The shock layer flow is bounded by the bow shock wave and the front and lat eral parts of the body surface. A conventional approach to calculation of shock layer flows consists in a successive solution of the inviscid gas and boundary layer equations. When the afore-mentioned effects become important, implementation of these models meets difficulties or even becomes impossible. In this case, one has to use a more general approach based on the viscous shock layer concept.

Book excerpt: A method has been developed for calculating subsonic three-dimensional flows over fighter aircraft configurations at flow conditions including separation. The method employs a viscid inviscid interaction approach, with a panel method used for the inviscid analysis and a finite difference boundary layer method for the viscous analysis. The viscid and inviscid analyses are coupled using an interactive technique based on inverse boundary layer theory. This approach allows efficient calculation of flows with large separation regions, including both leading and trailing edge separations. The method was validated on three fighter aircraft geometries and comparisons with test data are presented. Book excerpt: A new computational model for three-dimensional shock-boundary layer interaction has been developed for use in viscous transonic flow calculations. In general, the new model has been found to be an improvement over the old method in which the boundary-layer equations are simply integrated through the shock. The basic empirical content of the method was tested against detailed boundary-layer measurements in two-dimensional transonic airfoil flows, and the new model was found, in general, to give better agreement with experiment. The new model has also been tested in coupled viscous-inviscid interaction calculations for wings and for nacelles.

Book excerpt: This volume contains a selection of the papers presented at the Fourth Symposium on Numerical and Physical Aspects of Aerodynamic Flows, which was held at the California State University, Long Beach, from 16-19 January 1989. It includes the Stewartson Memorial Lecture of Professor J. H. Whitelaw, and is divided into three parts. The first is a collection of papers that describe the status of current technology in two- and three-dimensional steady flows, the second deals with two- and three-dimensional unsteady flows, and the papers in the third address stability and transition. Each of the three parts begins with an overview of current research, as described in the following chapters. The individual papers are edited versions of the selected papers originally submitted to the symposium. Four years have passed since the Third Symposium, and certain trends be come clear if one compares the papers contained in this volume with those of previous volumes. There are more three- than two-dimensional problems consid ered in Part 1 and the latter address more difficult problems than in the past, for example, the extension to higher angles of attack, to transonic flow, to leading edge ice accretion, and to thick hydrofoils. The large number of papers in the first part reflects the emphasis of current research and development and the needs of industry.

The integral method of Lees-Reeves-Klineberg has been modified in order to compute viscous interactions over a continuous range of wall-to-stagnation temperature ratios using a single set of 'universal' integral functions. Comparisons between the theoretical predictions and the experimental results obtained from pressure and heat transfer distribution measurements show satisfactory agreements. The first lecture in memory of Professor Keith Stewartson was delivered by J. T. Stuart and is reproduced in this volume together with a selection of the papers presented at the Symposium. In Volume II of this series, papers were selected so as to provide a clear indication of the range of procedures available to represent two-dimensional flows, their physical foundation, and their predictive ability. In this volume, the emphasis is on three-dimensional flows with a section of five papers concerned with unsteady flows and a section of seven papers on three dimensional flows: The papers deal mainly with calculation methods and encompass subsonic and transonic, attached and separated flows. The selec tion has been made so as to fulfill the same purpose for three-dimensional flows as did Volume II for two-dimensional flows.
