Book excerpt: Conventional meteorological radiosonde humidity data are not reliable above the -40 C temperature level. An evaluation of several models used to describe the water-vapor profile above the -40 C temperature level, using frost-point data obtained from the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), revealed that a simple model performed as well as more complex models to calculate the precipitable water. This model incorporates estimates of the frost-point temperature at the tropopause calculated with a regression equation, a hygropause fixed at 1 km above the tropopause, and an interpolated value of the mixing ratio. The error in precipitable water and in the transmissivity in the 2.95 micrometer band served as the principal means for judging the performance of the models. (Author).

Book excerpt: Calculations of atmospheric transmittance and radiance require the knowledge of the integrated amounts of the absorbing gases along the path. This report describes the calculation of the integrated amounts ('air mass' or 'column density') for various infrared absorbing gases for an arbitrary slant path through the atmosphere, including the effects of both curvature and refraction, and presents a Fortran program. FSCATM, to perform the calculation. Among the features of FSCATM are: 1. It calculates the layer-by-layer integrated absorber amounts and density-weighted pressure and temperature for an arbitrary slant path through the atmosphere. 2. It assumes a spherically symmetric atmospheric with exponential profiles of density and refractivity between layer boundaries. 3. It allows a variety of options for specifying the slant path. 4. It includes six representative atmospheric profiles of pressure and temperature, and of density for the gases H2O, CO2, O3, N2O, CO, CH3, and O2 and has provision for user-supplied profiles of up to 20 gases. 5. The output layering may either be generated internally or supplied by the user. 6. It portable to 32 bit word computers in single precision and compatible with both ANSI Standard FORTRAN 66 and 77. 7. It is modular and easily modified to suit the users' particular needs. A discussion of atmospheric profile data and a survey of the literature are included in appendices.

Book excerpt: The Real-Time Nephanalysis (RTNE PH) generates real-time global analysis of cloud extent, base, height, and type. The RTNE PH makes extensive use of satellite data that are measured in the 10-12 micron infrared (IR) window for thermal mapping of clouds and the earth's surface both day and night. Water vapor absorption effects are significant in such data, especially for high viewing angles and tropical atmospheres where water vapor concentrations are generally high. Water vapor attenuates the emitted ground radiance, reducing its magnitude and with it the apparent temperature of the surface being viewed. Currently, the RTNEPH takes into account such attenuation losses using lookup tables that are functions of viewing geometry, time of day, type of background, and the like. However, these corrections have limited value and leave room for significant improvement. This report outlines and presents two new techniques that are expected to enhance the attenuation correction capabilities of the RTNEPH, multivariate polynomial regression (the Weinreb technique) and the correlated K method.

Book excerpt: This paper presents the first and the only simultaneous measurements of water vapor by MIR (Millimeter-wave Imaging Radiometer) and LASE (Lidar Atmospheric Sounding Experiment) on board the same ER-2 aircraft. Water vapor is one of the most important constituents in the Earth's atmosphere, as its spatial and temporal variations affect a wide spectrum of meteorological phenomena ranging from the formation of clouds to the development of severe storms. Its concentration, as measured in terms of relative humidity, determines the extinction coefficient of atmospheric aerosol particles and therefore visibility. These considerations point to the need for effective and frequent measurements of the atmospheric water vapor. The MIR and LASE instruments provide measurements of water vapor profiles with two markedly different techniques. LASE can give water vapor profiles with excellent vertical resolution under clear condition, while MIR can retrieve water vapor profiles with a crude vertical resolution even under a moderate cloud cover. Additionally, millimeter-wave measurements are relatively simple and provide better spatial coverage.

Book excerpt: This report compares simultaneous spectroscopic and radiometric measurements of atmospheric water vapor above aircraft flight levels and determines the water vapor overburden. The measurements taken during 15 flights indicate that (1) both techniques give the same water vapor overburden to within 1 micrometer of precipitable water vapor, and (2) the median water vapor overburden is 6.5 micrometers precipitable water vapor at 41,000 ft (approx 180 mbar pressure) in the mid-latitude western United States during the summer/fall season, with a range from 4 to 11 micrometers.
