Marius, the avenger who sprang from the dust of the Gracchi, inherited their work, and succeeded in partly enfranchising the Italian allies of Rome. He also gave form to the army which was to be such a mighty instrument in the hand of Caesar, and the force which should give permanence to the Imperial system. But Marius and liberalism were crushed under the hoof of Privilege an aristo cratic restoration took place; had it continued, the greatness of Rome would have been as little perma nent as that of Athens. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Caesar's Bellum Britannicum: With Introductory Notices, Notes and Complete Vocabulary, for the Use of Intermediate and University Classes As this Edition is intended for the use of Candidates pre paring for University Pass Matriculation and the High School Intermediate Examination, the notes have been made concise. While the Editor has avoided giving too much aid, he has constantly aimed at showing how a passage should be construed, and made a reference to the Grammar of Mr. Harkness whenever any difficulty presented itself. At the suggestion of some friends, it has been thought ad visable to add references to the Grammar of Messrs. Allen Greenough, which, though comparatively unknown in Canada, possesses many valuable features as a School book. The Editor is indebted to Smith's Dictionaries, and to such works as Browne's Roman Literature and Crutwell's Roman Literature, for the matter in the Introduction. To Peile's Greek and Latin Etymology he is under obligations for. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Studies on the Text of Caesar s Bellum civile

Download or read book Studies on the Text of Caesar s Bellum civile written by Cynthia Damon and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2015-09-24 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies on the Text of Caesar's Bellum civile is a companion volume to Damon's revised Oxford Classical Texts edition of Caesar's Bellum civile, his account of his civil war with Pompey. Comprising three parts, this volume investigates the detailed philological arguments that underpin the revised edition of the text. The first part supplements the preface of the Oxford Classical Texts edition, providing an expanded background on the history of the text and a more detailed argument for the shape of the stemma. The second part is a discussion of nature and the causes of the difficulties present in the text of the Bellum civile and their consequences for the revised edition. The third part presents a series of around 75 notes on different areas of the text, exploring in depth the contentions behind the various remedies suggested in the critical apparatus of the Oxford Classical Texts edition.
