Book When the cactus rose blooms

Download or read book When the cactus rose blooms written by Val Villarreal, Jr. and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2014-02-18 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The title, When the cactus rose blooms, points to a human being: to one who is ruggedly heroic, not quite tied to an unassuming demeanor; it points to the intuitive character that John Wayne plays in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence. The cactus plant serves as a motive running through this character’s prickly, but kind, awkward, but right symphonic journey: it points to that piece of music we might call “man”. In the film we are told that when the legend becomes a lie you print the legend, or something along those lines; we, on the other hand, live on too many legends founded on too many lies! The total venue of our existence has for the longest while now been needing an overhaul. As has been stated in The Pebble Poems, the first attempt to tackle such ills, this is a case for, and not against, love; our need to be unwhispered here requires it. We are asked to press out of the ordinary, past remembrance, to step into that place where “the cactus rose blooms”! The times we live in keep changing inordinately; here’s hoping a fresh perspective proves helpful.

Book excerpt: In the heat of the southwest, desire is the kindling for two lost souls—and the flame of passion threatens to consume them both. Rosie Saladay needs to get married—fast. The young widow needs help to protect her late husband’s ranch, but no decent woman can live alone with a hired hand. With the wealthy Wesley Morris making a play for her land, Rosie needs a husband or she risks losing everything. So she hangs a sign at the local saloon: “Husband wanted. Apply inside. No conjugal rights.” Delmar Grant is a sucker for a damsel in distress, and even with Rosie’s restrictions on “boots under her bed” stated firmly in black and white, something about the lovely widow’s plea leaves him unable to turn away her proposal of marriage. Though neither planned on falling in love, passion ignites between the unlikely couple. But their buried secrets—and enemies with both greed and a grudge—threaten to tear them apart. They’ll discover this marriage of convenience may cost them more than they could have ever bargained for.

Book Screening American Nostalgia

Download or read book Screening American Nostalgia written by Susan Flynn and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2021-07-26 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines American screen culture and its power to create and sustain values. Looking specifically at the ways in which nostalgia colors the visions of American life, essays explore contemporary American ideology as it is created and sustained by the screen. Nostalgia is omnipresent, selling a version of America that arguably never existed. Current socio-cultural challenges are played out onscreen and placed within the historical milieu through a nostalgic lens which is tempered by contemporary conservatism. Essays reveal not only the visual catalog of recognizable motifs but also how these are used to temper the uncertainty of contemporary crises. Media covered spans from 1939's Gone with the Wind, to Stranger Things, The Americans, Twin Peaks, the Fallout franchise and more.

Book The Philosophy of the Western

Download or read book The Philosophy of the Western written by Jennifer L. McMahon and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2010-05-28 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The great German novelist Thomas Mann implored readers to resist the persistent and growing militarism of the mid-twentieth century. To whom should we turn for guidance during this current era of global violence, political corruption, economic inequality, and environmental degradation? For more than two millennia, the worldÕs great thinkers have held that the ethically Ògood lifeÓ is the highest purpose of human existence. Renowned political philosopher Fred Dallmayr traces the development of this notion, finding surprising connections among Aristotelian ethics, Abrahamic and Eastern religious traditions, German idealism, and postindustrial social criticism. In Search of the Good Life does not offer a blueprint but rather invites readers on a cross-cultural quest. Along the way, the author discusses the teachings of Aristotle, Confucius, Nicolaus of Cusa, Leibniz, and Schiller, in addition invoking more recent writings of Gadamer and Ricoeur, as guideposts and sources of hope during our troubled times. Among contemporary themes Dallmayr discusses are the role of the classics in education, proper and improper ways of spreading democracy globally, the possibility of transnational citizenship, the problem of politicized evil, and the role of religion in our predominantly secular culture. Dallmayr restores the notion of the good life as a hallmark of personal conduct, civic virtue, and political engagement, and as the road map to enduring peace. In Search of the Good Life seeks to arouse complacent and dispirited citizens, guiding them out of the distractions of shallow amusements and perilous resentments in the direction of mutual learning and civic pedagogyÑa direction that will enable them to impose accountability on political leaders who stray from fundamental ethical standards.

Book Legal Reelism

  • Author : John Denvir
  • Publisher : University of Illinois Press
  • Release : 1996
  • ISBN : 9780252065354
  • Pages : 336 pages

Download or read book Legal Reelism written by John Denvir and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Law and and justice are important themes in film, not only in courtroom dramas, but also in the western, the film noir, even the documentary. In the Godfather trilogy Francis Ford Coppola shows that the Mafia possesses its own strict codes, even though they are in conflict with those of the criminal justice system. In Woody Allen's Crimes and Misdemeanors the protagonist also "gets away with murder," but with a different dramatic intent by the director and a different effect on the audience. Shedding light on myriad facets of the law/film relationship, fourteen contributors to Legal Reelism analyze films ranging from The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, It's a Wonderful Life, and Drums Along the Mohawk to Do the Right Thing, Basic Instinct, The Thin Blue Line, and Thelma and Louise. The first volume to contain work by both humanists and legal specialists, Legal Reelism is a landmark text for those concerned with depictions of justice in the media and the impact of those depictions on society at large.
