Book Memories of a Bygone Age

Download or read book Memories of a Bygone Age written by Prince Arfa and published by Gingko Library. This book was released on 2016-11-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set against the backdrop of Iran’s struggle against the rising powers of Russia and Britain, the memoirs of Mirza Riza Khan Arfa’-ed-Dowleh—otherwise known as Prince Arfa (1853–1902)—are packed with picaresque adventures as the prince tells the story of his rise from humble provincial beginnings to the heights of the Iranian state. With this translation, his incredible story is brought to life for the first time in English. Prince Arfa writes with arresting wit about the deadly intrigues of the Qajar court. Lamentingly, but resolutely, he chronicles the decline of Iran from a once great empire to an almost bankrupt, lawless state, in which social unrest is channelled and exploited by the clergy. He describes the complex interactions between Iran and Europe, including an account of Naser-od-Din Shah’s profligate visits to Britain and France; the splendor and eccentricities of the doomed Tsar Nicholas II’s court; the Tsar’s omen-laden coronation; and his own favor with the Tsarina, who would grant him concessions on matters of vital importance to his country. The result is a memoir of extraordinary political intrigue.

Download or read book To Egypt With Love written by Viviane Bowell and published by . This book was released on 2021-07-16 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was written primarily as a legacy to the author's family. She was born in Egypt and grew up in Cairo in the 1950's in a secular Jewish community which had its own unique customs and traditions. In its apogee, the community numbered 80,000 people. They all left or were expelled between 1948 and 1967 and there are now only a handful of Jews still living in Egypt. In the book, she shares memories of her childhood and describes in great detail a way of life which no longer exists. She evokes the scents snd smells of the busy Cairo streets and describes the local people she came into contact with every day. Jewish and Muslim festivals, mores, customs and superstitions are recounted anecdotally. She also talks about her experience as a refugee in England, initially living in a hostel in Gloucestershire and then settling in London. Apart from her father, her family did not speak English, so learning a new language, battling with the harsh English winter and adapting to a new culture had its difficulties. Her family, like most refugees, surmounted all these with a great deal of resilience and determination. She describes herself as British, but confesses to still feeling somewhat uprooted, even after all these years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This story is about families. How they started, how they came together, and how they ended. It begins three days before Christmas 1945 when a young woman leaves home after a heated argument with her mother. She hastily marries a recently discharged World War II soldier on a train. Their families are astounded to learn of their marriage after such a brief encounter. Although their marriage was sudden, their union has the hallmarks of being successful. Their marriage causes one family member to reminisce about his experiences as a World War I pilot. After the war, he and a fellow pilot purchase two surplus Jenny aircraft and barnstorm from North Dakota to Washington state. Two North Dakota farm girl sisters join them and become wing walkers. Sadly, their aerial troupe ends in Spokane. They use the remaining plane to smuggle liquor from Canada during Prohibition. Their adventurous journey has been a hollow experience compared to the value of family and friends. By the early 1950s, the families are united, living and working together in a premier apartment building in Great Falls, Montana, where they spend the rest of their lives.

Book The Bygone Days

Download or read book The Bygone Days written by Reginald Dutch Thompson and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reginald--better known as "Dutch"--Thompson is a multi-faceted storyteller with unforgettable voices--those of Roy from Murray Harbour North, Adelaide from Bunbury, Gus from Chepstow, and countless others--to tell the stories of the Bygone days in Prince Edward Island [sometimes NS, too]. Stories that, without Dutch's talent and care, might be remembered only by family and close friends or lost altogether. Remember when the train ran from tip to tip and along all the small branches, taking goods, people, and baseball teams to other parts of the Island? How about when ice cream and two pieces of cakes cost 10 cents at White's Ice Cream Parlour on Kent Street? When lobster was not the gourmet's delight it is now and the backs were used to fertilize the crops? That butchering the pig before a full moon will mean less fat on the meat? Or that it was bad luck to cut your nails on Sundays. From CBC Radio to the pages of this book, you'll hear Dutch's voice encouraging these informative, illuminating, poignant, and hilarious stories from the minds and hearts of Maritimers born between 1895 and 1925, almost as if they were all still here and telling them to you.

Download or read book Memories of By Gone Days Classic Reprint written by W. H. Steele and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memories of by-Gone Days When my husband asked me to write the foreword to this little book I was glad, for no one except the author can feel so great an interest in this as I do. His articles and pictures for the outdoor magazines have been a pleasure to both of us, and it has long been my desire to see them gathered into a volume in permanent form. In Memories of Bygone Days there is no morbid tendency to disparage present joys, but simply a wholesome retrospect. Lulled in the countless chambers of the brain Our thoughts are linked by many a hidden chain. We may make of memory a blessing or a curse, just as we will. It is a stupendous thought that we are augmenting or decreasing future pleasure by the way we spend today. The only use we have for our past is to get a future out of it. All the pleasures of today One by one soon glide away To the golden shore of sweet long ago. Happy is that man whose memories are pleasant and profitable company. Alice kimball steele. Life for them started on small Michigan farms that lacked utilities, and ended in a very different modern world. They describe their first experiences with radios, automobiles and airplanes; and their honeymoon trip from Michigan to Washington DC in a Model A Ford at a time before a modern road system existed. The book also contains many poems from their courtship times, as well as stories in verse form that recount the adventures of youth; felling a giant perfectly balanced oak tree, taking a horse and cutter for a winter ice-fishing experience, and other memorable activities of yore.
