Book Memorials of Old Hertfordshire Classic Reprint

Download or read book Memorials of Old Hertfordshire Classic Reprint written by Percy Cross Standing and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorials of Old Hertfordshire The present volume has no pretensions to rank as a history of the County of Hertford. It has, indeed, been planned upon entirely other lines, the central idea of which is to endeavour to present a series of vivid word-pictures descriptive of the most striking and most picturesque events in Hertfordshire's chequered story. If the Editor has been partially successful in executing the plan adopted, he is content. To this end, a number of well-known and approved specialists on the various subjects have co-operated to produce a volume of "Memorials" not unworthy, it is hoped, to be considered as an important contribution to the annals of our counties. At the same time, an endeavour has been made to preserve, as far as possible, the due order of sequence of the different chapters, so that a certain continuity of epoch or period might be observed throughout. The Editor desires to express his grateful thanks to his many able contributors for their generous collaboration, and feels sure that the results of their painstaking research and the literary excellence of their writings will not fail to be appreciated by the public, and especially by the lovers of Old Hertfordshire. Download or read book Highways and Byways in Hertfordshire Classic Reprint written by Herbert W. Tompkins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Highways and Byways in Hertfordshire Hertfordshire is indeed Lamb's county. Many famous men has it bred, but if it is associated more with one name than another, that name is Charles Lamb. NO one loved Hertford shire better' or praised it so sweetly. Although he never actually had his home within its confines, nor was he born there (albeit he once speaks of his native Hertfordshire yet many of his happiest days in childhood were spent in Hertfordshire, with his grandmother, at Blakesware, near Widford; it was close by, at Blenheims, that his first love lived; he had a houseful of cousins near Wheathampstead; and in later life Lamb never tired Of walking along Hert fordshire roads and lanes. In a letter to Wordsworth, in 1822, Lamb, when he was forty-six, says I had thought in a green Old age (oh, green thought!) to have retired to Ponder's End (emblematic name, how beautiful!) in the Ware Road, there to have made up my accounts with Heaven and the [east India] Company, toddling about between it and Cheshunt anon stretching, on some fine Izaak Walton morning, to Hoddesdon or Amwell, careless as a beggar; but walking, walking ever till I fairly walked myself off my legs, dying walking! Book The Place Names of Hertfordshire Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Place Names of Hertfordshire Classic Reprint written by Walter William Skeat and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Place-Names of Hertfordshire As many persons are interested in the results of the study of place-names, it may be useful to say a few words upon the present way of pursuing this study. Perhaps the most striking point about modern methods is their startling opposition to those formerly in vogue, and still believed in by many who have not had the Opportunity of moving with the times. It is now known and recognised that both the underlying ideas and the practice of the eighteenth century and more than the former half of the nineteenth century are by all means to be abandoned; and, consequently, that very little that is really valuable is to be obtained from county historians. The chief idea, at that time, was that English names are not really English, but Celtic; and this notion was backed by the amazing proposition that even if the names were English they would still be of Celtic origin, because all English was such, since our unfortunate language had nothing original about it. In fact, it is by no means unlikely that such ideas still prevail in many places. But, as was long ago pointed out by Professor Max Miiller, the discovery and study of Sanskrit have entirely changed our point of view. We can now recognise the no longer disputed fact that the various languages or dialects of the indo-germanic family stand to each other in a sisterly relation; and, consequently, that Old Celtic and Old English must be placed side by side. It is not denied that, owing to the accident of the invasion of Britain by Celtic tribes before the coming of the English, we may have borrowed from them some of their names for some rivers and mountains, but the number of these is no longer enormously exaggerated; and it is by no means uncommon, in the present day, to discover that many names that were once supposed to be Celtic are only to be explained from anglo-saxon. In the East of England, in particular, traces of the British occupation are, after all, but slight; and all the commoner names of towns and villages are perfectly intelligible to anyone who has a reasonable acquaintance with anglo-saxon, and will take the pains to hunt up their earliest forms. Book Quiet Roads and Sleepy Villages Classic Reprint

Download or read book Quiet Roads and Sleepy Villages Classic Reprint written by Allan Fea and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Quiet Roads and Sleepy Villages Aldenham, and Hadley, still encloses a wide expanse Of unspoiled country; and between the Midland line to the East Of Aldenham and the Great Northern Railway, it is possible to wander and forget the existence of the iron road. The tract of country between Barnet Gate and the little remote village Of Ridge, viz? Rowley Green and Well End, for example, extends only just over the metropolitan area, yet the narrow, deep-set lanes hereabouts recall the very depths Of Devonshire. Approached by one of these leafy lanes is a snug little tree-embowered residence called The Oaks, whose simple, un pretentious exterior encloses many queer old rooms and a miniature chapel with ornamental screen and raised sanctuary. Our direction lies Bedford way, but we will avoid the monotonous and uninteresting northern road which intersects our imaginary parallelo gram. The old main highway, which took its more devious course through the whole length of South Mymms village, formed an S-like flourish before approaching Colney Green, now called London Colney. But the Old road if more rural has its disadvantages, for by following it we miss the Restoration Arch, which, like Temple Bar, was carried Off from London a couple Of centuries earlier and placed in peaceful Hertfordshire.
