Book Sicily s Historic Coasts

Download or read book Sicily s Historic Coasts written by Mike Metras and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013-06-19 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sicily, a crossroads of the Mediterranean for more than 3000 years, has been ruled by Carthaginians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, Swabians, French, Spanish, Italians, and miscellaneous others while its people have retained their strong personal independence. Come with me as I make my way around the coast of this island from Palermo to Palermo visiting extinct cities, collections of ancient coins, Europe's largest volcano, and many other corners of this island with a thousand faces. Walk with me through this series of essays, each a snapshot of a town, a city, a train, a beach, a haphazard pile of rocks--each a glimpse current life, of a long ago civilization, of rugged nature. They are my view of an October, turn-of-the-century Sicily.

Book Implications for Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Development in the Blue Economy

Download or read book Implications for Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Development in the Blue Economy written by Raimi, Lukman and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2022-04-08 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The blue economy is a widely used concept in policy circles; however, people across a wide spectrum have a peripheral understanding of the phenomenon. At the moment, there are several conflicting understandings of the blue economy but no universally accepted definition and veritable measures. Considering the existential importance of the blue economy for the protection of marine environments and sustainability of businesses, there is an urgent need for rigorous conceptual, policy-focused, theoretical, and empirical studies on the subject from multidisciplinary perspectives. Implications for Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Development in the Blue Economy enriches existing definitions of a blue economy with inputs from a multidisciplinary lens and provides veritable measures for evaluating blue economy progression and compliance. Covering topics such as economics, natural resource development, social equity, and sustainability, this reference work is ideal for policymakers, entrepreneurs, managers, oceanographers, marine biologists, scholars, industry professionals, government officials, academicians, researchers, practitioners, instructors, and students.

Book Blue Carbon Beyond the Inventory

Download or read book Blue Carbon Beyond the Inventory written by William Edward Newns Austin and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-02-20 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Research Topic will coincide with an international Blue Carbon Conference at the Royal Society of Edinburgh in November 2021, during the UNFCCC COP26 climate negotiations; we seek to showcase Blue Carbon as a Nature-based Solution for Climate Change, People and Biodiversity. The conference theme identifies the growing climate mitigation opportunities presented by Blue Carbon, yet also seeks to highlight the emergent research that points to the wider climate mitigation services of carbon in the marine environment - what we are calling "beyond the inventory". We welcome contributions that address the science and policy dimensions of Blue Carbon, particularly where these highlight opportunities and mechanisms for the protection, restoration and creation of Blue Carbon habitats. We also welcome case-study examples that highlight successful partnerships in a wide range of international settings and would particularly encourage contributions that show-case legal, policy or investment opportunities.

  • Pages : 265 pages

Download or read book The Sweetest Fruits written by Monique Truong and published by Upswell. This book was released on 2021-08-31 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With brilliant sensitivity and an unstinting eye, The Sweetest Fruits illuminates the women’s tenacity and their struggles in this novel that circumnavigates the globe in the search for love, family, home, and belonging. Monique Truong gives voice to three women, Rosa, Alethea, and Setsu, who each tell the story of their life with Lafcadio Hearn (1850-1904), a globetrotting Greek-Irish writer best known as the author of America’s first Creole cookbook and for his many volumes about the folklore and ghost stories of Meiji Era Japan. An immigrant thrice over, Hearn is now remembered at best as a keen cultural observer and at worst as a purveyor of exotica. In their own unorthodox ways, the three women are also intrepid travelers and explorers. Their accounts witness Hearn’s remarkable life but also seek to witness their own existence and luminous will to live unbounded by gender, race, and the mores of their time. Each is a gifted storyteller with her own precise reason for sharing her story, and together their voices offer a revealing, often contradictory portrait of Hearn. ‘It isn’t only the fantastic Lafcadio Hearn who springs to new life in these pages. The women around him do as well, even as they mix the extraordinary and the ordinary in an exhilarating new way. The Sweetest Fruits is brilliant and heartbreaking–I was transfixed.’ —Gish En, author of Typical American ‘Presented in four courses from the perspective of the women closest to him, The Sweetest Fruits is a feast you’ll want to devour for its arresting metaphors and its beautiful prose.’ —Anita Lo, author of Solo: A Modern Cookbook for One ‘Intimate and sensuous yet majestic in scope, The Sweetest Fruits is a rapturous, glorious novel, extraordinarily alive to the world.’ —Idra Novey, author Those Who Knew ‘Monique Truong has composed a sublime, many-voiced novel of voyage and reinvention. It will cross horizons, yet remain burrowed in your heart.’ —Anthony Marra, author of A Constellation of Vital Phenomena ‘By giving readers a concert of voices, at last singing louder than Hearn’s biography and mythology, Truong asks us to ponder the ways those who are often ignored and marginalized might have their own rich, epic stories worth telling. In that sense, The Sweetest Fruits is a type of justice.’ —Eric Nguyen, author of Diacritics

Download or read book The Blue Age written by Gregg Easterbrook and published by PublicAffairs. This book was released on 2021-09-07 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The US Navy brought half a century of peace and free trade to the world’s waterways. But climate change and rising nationalism threaten to end this blue age. For decades, the Navy has stood sentinel over crucial waterways, ensuring safe passage of goods from nearly all nations. The result is the longest phase of peace on the waters since the Phoenicians, with rising living standards, more (total) jobs, and the dramatic decline of poverty in Asia. But these prosperous times could be at an end. Today China is building warships at an extraordinary pace. India, Japan, Vietnam, and Europe are responding with more fighting ships. What will result from China’s rising naval might, particularly in the South China Sea? As ocean resources are shaped by climate change and new discoveries, will the world share them or fight over them? What will happen if America turns against free trade? Without American investment, the world could see a rise of supply shortages and seagoing conflict that would dwarf the impact of the container ship stuck in the Suez Canal. Surveying naval history, economics, environmental threats, and great-power politics, The Blue Age makes an urgent argument about our oceans’ vital importance to the peace and prosperity of our global community.
