Book excerpt: "We then determined to use the small remnant of our fortune to provide a suitable outfit for a lengthy journey toward the setting sun." Like so many others Lavinia Honeyman Porter and her husband decided to make the treacherous journey across the continent of America to find a better life. This is their story. Although very young, as they were both in their twenties, their decision had been made and there was no turning back. Through barren plains, treacherous mountain passes, dangerous foreign lands, they led their young oxen onwards. As they continued their emigration westwards they met a variety of people, from Native Americans to Mormons, assisting where they could and being assisted in turn. Porter and her husband travelled through varied lands of the Midwest and West, stopping at camps and trading posts where they could get some rest. Porter's By Ox Team to California is a moving piece of social history which documents the struggles and hopes of ordinary Americans in the mid-nineteenth century. After arriving in California after six months Porter set down her story in this book. She would go on to enjoy a further fifty years in California before passing away in 1910.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from By Ox Team to California: A Narrative of Crossing the Plains in 1860 When my two great, stalwart grandsons were little shavers, it was their favorite habit in the early hours of the morning to come creeping into bed with grandmother. Their soft little arms would twine lovingly about my neck and kisses from their dewy lips were pressed upon my cheek and brow. And were I ever so far away in slumber land their sweet voices clamoring for a story would banish all sleep from my drowsy eyelids. Usually they selected their own stories from the numbers I had so often repeated, but invariably wound up, when I had exhausted my fund, by saying, Now, grandmother, tell us about crossing the plains. The true stories appealed more strongly to them than all the illusory conceptions of fancy, from the fact, perhaps, that I could relate what really had occurred better than I could draw from my imagina tion. Be that as it may, they never wearied of hear ing how I crossed the plains, climbed the Rocky mountains and traveled many months on my way to California. To gratify them and their dear mother I have consented to write up for them the history of my overland journey. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Ox-Team Days on the Oregon Trail' is a book written by Ezra Meeker about his experience traveling the Oregon Trail by ox-drawn wagon as a young man, migrating from Iowa to the Pacific Coast. Later on in his life, Meeker became convinced that the Oregon Trail was being forgotten, and he determined to bring it publicity so it could be marked and monuments erected. In 1906–1908, while in his late 70s, he retraced his steps along the Oregon Trail by wagon, seeking to build monuments in communities along the way. His trek reached New York City, and in Washington, D.C., he met President Theodore Roosevelt. He traveled the Trail again several times in the final two decades of this life, including by oxcart in 1910–1912 and by airplane in 1924.

Book Women and Men on the Overland Trail

Download or read book Women and Men on the Overland Trail written by John Mack Faragher and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic book offers a lively and penetrating analysis of what the overland journey was really like for midwestern farm families in the mid-1800s. Through the subtle use of contemporary diaries, memoirs, and even folk songs, John Mack Faragher dispels the common stereotypes of male and female roles and reveals the dynamic of pioneer family relationships. This edition includes a new preface in which Faragher looks back on the social context in which he formulated his original thesis and provides a new supplemental bibliography. Praise for the earlier edition: "Faragher has made excellent use of the Overland Trail materials, using them to illuminate the society the emigrants left as well as the one they constructed en route. His study should be important to a wide range of readers, especially those interested in family history, migration and western history, and women's history."--Kathryn Kish Sklar "An enlightening study."--American West "A helpful study which not only illuminates the daily life of rural Americans but which also begins to compensate for the male orientation of so much of western history."--Journal of Social History
