Book excerpt: For nearly two centuries, Americans have embraced the Western like no other artistic genre. Creators and consumers alike have utilized this story form in literature, painting, film, radio and television to explore questions of national identity and purpose. Westerns: The Essential Collection comprises the Journal of Popular Film and Television’s rich and longstanding legacy of scholarship on Westerns with a new special issue devoted exclusively to the genre. This collection examines and analyzes the evolution and significance of the screen Western from its earliest beginnings to its current global reach and relevance in the 21st century. Westerns: The Essential Collection addresses the rise, fall and durability of the genre, and examines its preoccupation with multicultural matters in its organizational structure. Containing eighteen essays published between 1972 and 2011, this seminal work is divided into six sections covering Silent Westerns, Classic Westerns, Race and Westerns, Gender and Westerns, Revisionist Westerns and Westerns in Global Context. A wide range of international contributors offer original critical perspectives on the intricate relationship between American culture and Western films and television series. Westerns: The Essential Collection places the genre squarely within the broader aesthetic, socio-historical, cultural and political dimensions of life in the United States as well as internationally, where the Western has been reinvigorated and reinvented many times. This groundbreaking anthology illustrates how Western films and television series have been used to define the present and discover the future by looking backwards at America’s imagined past.

Book Aim for the Heart

Download or read book Aim for the Heart written by Howard Hughes and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2009-07-30 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clint Eastwood is one of the world's most popular action stars, who has matured into a fine American producer-director. Entertaining, illuminating and packed with information, up to and including "The Changeling", this is the first book to cover his full life in the movies, from his beginnings in 1950s B-movies and in TV's "Rawhide" to "Gran Torino" showing how as both actor and filmmaker Eastwood aims for the heart of the drama, whatever the story. Howard Hughes follows Eastwood's craft through over 50 movies. He looks at his launch into superstardom in Sergio Leone's 1960s spaghetti westerns. Back in America, he built on his success as western hero with such films as "High Plains Drifter" and "The Outlaw Josey Wales", winning an Oscar for "Unforgiven" in 1992. He blasted his way through the seventies and eighties as Inspector Harry Francis Callahan, the last hope for law enforcement in San Francisco. He also monkeyed around in two phenomenally popular films with Clyde the orang-utan, which brought tough-guy Eastwood to a whole new audience and made him the biggest box office star of his generation. "Aim for the Heart" also looks at Eastwood's more unusual roles, including "The Beguiled", "The Bridges of Madison County" and "Million Dollar Baby". Since 1970, he has enjoyed parallel success as director-producer of his own Malpaso Productions, with "Bird", "Mystic River" and "Letters from Iwo Jima", demonstrating formidable directing credentials. "Aim for the Heart" covers all Eastwood's movies of many genres in detail, and Eastwood's story is illustrated with film stills, glimpses behind the scenes, and rare poster advertising material. "Aim for the Heart" also includes the most comprehensive credits filmography has ever compiled on Eastwood's work, as star and director.

Book Philip Kaufman

Download or read book Philip Kaufman written by Annette Insdorf and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2012-02-28 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American director Philip Kaufman is hard to pin down: a visual stylist who is truly literate, a San Franciscan who often makes European films, he is an accessible storyteller with a sophisticated touch. Celebrated for his vigorous, sexy, and reflective cinema, Kaufman is best known for his masterpiece The Unbearable Lightness of Being and the astronaut saga The Right Stuff. In this study, Annette Insdorf argues that Kaufman's cinema is both stylistically and philosophically rich and that his versatility is what distinguishes him as an auteur. She demonstrates Kaufman's skill at adaptation and how he finds the precise cinematic device for a story drawn from seemingly un-adaptable sources by using his cinematic eye to translate the authorial voice in many of the books that serve as inspiration for his films. Closely analyzing his films to date, Insdorf links Kaufman's versatile cinema by exploring the recurring and resonant themes of sensuality, artistic creation, and manipulation by authorities. She illustrates while there is no overarching label or bold signature that can be applied to his oeuvre, there is a consistency of themes, techniques, images, and preoccupations that permeates all of Kaufman's works.

Book Good News Bad News Who Can Tell

Download or read book Good News Bad News Who Can Tell written by Don Worth Ph.D. and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2022-11-06 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The title of this book comes from an ancient parable about a farmer who, when greeted with fortune or misfortune has the same retort: “Good news, bad news, who can tell?” The parable provides some simple wisdom in approaching turbulence and catastrophe in life, such as living through a pandemic. This book offers a variety of touching stories, lyrics, and poems written by people who represent nine categories of those on the frontlines of the pandemic (educators, COVID survivors, artists, clergy, those who lost loved ones, students, physicians, restauranteurs, and journalists) from the U.S. and India, regarding experiences, lessons and wisdom they acquired. A novel interpretation of the parable is presented as well as a framing (a figure 8) that provides some perspective and guidance as we move through the various trials and tribulations of life, and through challenges of mental illness and substance use. There is also a chapter “signs of the times” which showcases a variety of creative and amusing signs that were all around us during the pandemic. Even some clever bathroom signs. The summary outlines lessons learned and wisdom gained by the editor from struggling through the pandemic in rural West Virginia, as a psychotherapist on the frontlines, and from reading the heartfelt stories and poems in the book. And perhaps the most interesting feature of the book is the last chapter, an opportunity to reflect and write your own lessons, story, poem, and space for your photos to add to the documentation of this experience called “the pandemic.”

Download or read book Butterfly Wars written by David Roller and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2022-06-06 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Butterfly Wars is about the destructive nature of post-traumatic stress disorder over time. In a one-year reflective journal, the narrator tells the first-person account of the development and fragility of his character, which is then subjected to provocative challenges that shatter expectations, reducing one to chronic depression. The net result overtime is low self-esteem, with personal value only credited to experiences outside of himself. The challenges are glimpses at the destructive nature of fundamentalism, the skewed perception in accepting responsibility when one is too young, the crushing weight of trusting others, and progressing to the ultimate in humiliation. The account is about failed efforts to be responsible for taking care of oneself and chronic isolation. Failure is the inability to see true value, when self-worth is not deemed possible. He wears blinders when surrounded by high self-achievement. The first step in recovery is the late life experiencing of one significant other. The book is a storyline that concludes with the realization of a beginning.

Download or read book Rome and America written by Dean Hammer and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-01-05 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This Roman polish, and this smooth behaviour, That render man thus tractable and tame? Are they not only to disguise our passions, To set our looks at variance with our thoughts, To check the starts and sallies of the soul, And break off all its commerce with the tongue; In short, to change us into other creatures, Than what our nature and the gods designed us? (Joseph Addison, Cato: A Tragedy, I, 4, 40-47) What have we been changed into? Amidst Rome's civil war, the Numidian general, Syphax, questions the effects of Romanization endorsed by Numa, the prince of Numidia and ally of Cato the Younger in the fight against Caesar. This question is unsettling in part because answering it begins to undermine an assumption about the past upon which the question rests. The more one pushes the question, the more one realizes that there is no absolute beginning point, no from, but only ongoing experiences and memories that almost imperceptibly connect to identities. Yet cultures attempt to answer the question of identity definitively. Cultures naturalize, lending normativity to beliefs and actions that form identity. And cultures narrativize, giving constancy to identity over time. The assumptions that underlie these narratives - the symbolic resources that a culture draws on - rest in the background as something already familiar within which one remembers, makes sense of experiences, and forms 12 expectations. To ask about these assumptions unsettles, laying bare the anxieties that underlie the question, "Who are We?" We answer the question for America through familiar European categories that grow out of the Renaissance and Enlightenment. Questions of the American founding are organized around debates about its republican, liberal, or religious heritage. The space, itself, appears as an empty state of nature in which a new history (absent a feudal past) can begin. Belonging appears as a formal feature of the integrated nation-state (notably, citizenship) that is comprised of constitutional rights and sustained by market interactions. And the future is envisioned as a narrative of progress of reason, science, wealth, and rights. Early American social actors and observers defined it this way; scholars analyze America in these terms"--
