Book excerpt: Buxton, Iowa, was an unincorporated coal mining town, established by Consolidation Coal Company in 1900. At a time when Jim Crow laws and segregation kept blacks and whites separated throughout the nation, Buxton was integrated. African American and Caucasian residents lived, worked, and went to school side by side. The company provided miners with equal housing and equal pay, regardless of race, and offered opportunities for African Americans beyond mining. Professional African Americans included a bank cashier, the justice of the peace, constables, doctors, attorneys, store clerks, and teachers. Businesses, such as a meat market, a drugstore, a bakery, a music store, hotels, millinery shops, a saloon, and restaurants, were owned by African Americans. For 10 years, African Americans made up more than half of the population. Unfortunately, in the early 1920s, the mines closed, and today, only a cemetery, a few foundations, and some crumbling ruins remain.

Elijah's the first child in town to be born free, and he ought to be famous just for that -- not to mention for being the best at chunking rocks and catching fish. Unfortunately, all that most people see is a "fra-gile" boy who's scared of snakes and tends to talk too much. But everything changes when a former slave steals money from Elijah's friend, who has been saving to buy his family out of captivity in the South. Now it's up to Elijah to track down the thief -- and his dangerous journey just might make a hero out of him, if only he can find the courage to get back home.
Download or read book Who wants to be a Millionaire written by Emmanuel Kwesi Anim and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2021-07 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prosperity Teaching is fast becoming a standard part of contemporary African Christianity. This teaching is best understood in the Charismatic and Pentecostal churches in Africa. The varied expressions and nuances call for a critical analysis of the phenomenon. Prosperity Teaching affirms wealth, divine healing, good health and long-life as manifestations of God's blessing. Conspicuous consumption is often seen as a sign of a successful life and suffering has no place in the divine order of God's sovereignty. This book, Who Wants to be a Millionaire? seeks to bring some understanding to this teaching and shows the extent of its impact in the wider society.
