Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Facsimile edition of the 1974 reissue of Flinders Petrie’s 1917 pioneering typological catalog of Egyptian name-scarabs and cylinders, one of a number of such catalogs to be reissued in this new series. The beetle form of amulets are common finds on Egyptian sites but examples with engraved names represent a small proportion of the total. Over 240 different royal persons are named among the various major museum collections. Petrie here illustrates and discusses over 1600 examples in his own collection together with a selection of inscribed steatite cylinders. He discusses the religious aspects of scarabs and their magical use, their varieties, materials and manufacture, and presents a chronological discussion with fully illustrated catalog of both line drawings and photographs.

Book The Political Situation in Egypt During the Second Intermediate Period C 1800 1550 B C

Download or read book The Political Situation in Egypt During the Second Intermediate Period C 1800 1550 B C written by K. S. B. Ryholt and published by Museum Tusculanum Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Second Intermediate Period designates the 250 year period (18001550 BC) which separates the two glorious periods of the Middle Kingdom and the New Kingdom. During the 19th century BC, an invasion by Caanite tribes into the Delta took place. Around 1800 BC these people proclaimed their own king and the Delta thus became independent from the rest of Egypt. Egypt remained split between the Canaanitic rulers in North and the native Egyptian Kings in the South for the rest of the Second Intermediate Period. The division of Egypt brought about an economic decline, and the entire period is characterized by a lack of royal monuments. This circumstance has greatly hampered any attempts to establish a chronology of the period, and as a consequence it has been very difficult to date many sources which are relevant for the social and political situation of the period. The Second Intermediate Period has therefore remained one of the most obscure periods of Egypt's ancient history. The dissertation is a new attempt to establish a chronology for the Second Intermediate Period and define the different kingdoms, their territories and political relations. The study consists of four main chapters, three appendixes, a catalogue of sources, bibliography and indices. Included is a catalogue of all the historical sources, about 1500, known to certify the names of the Egyptian kings of the Second Intermediate Period. Each source is described in terms of type, origin and present location, followed by bibliographical references.

Book excerpt: This illustrated catalogue presents 190 objects from the Collection of Palestinian Antiquities in the Museum of Art and Archaeology at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Covering the 4th millennium BC to the 8th century AD, the artefacts are presented in ten thematic sections. These cover such subjects as: death and burial in the early Bronze Age; war; the domestic world in the Bronze and Iron Ages; the wider world; religion in the late Bronze and Iron Ages; Hellenistic and Byzantine trade; the villa at Tel Anafa; technology; everyday life in the hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine periods; and pagans, Jews and Christians. Each section begins with a discussion followed by a full description and discussion of the objects themselves, all of which are illustrated. Many types of object are represented including ceramics and lamps, personal implements and tools, religious figurines and carvings, jewellery, bone items, toilet implements, scarabs, armour and weapons, intaglio gems and ossuaries. The book begins with a brief discussion of changing attitudes and practice in the archaeology of the Holy Hand.

Book gyptisches Kulturgut im ph nikischen und punischen Sardinien 2 vols

Download or read book gyptisches Kulturgut im ph nikischen und punischen Sardinien 2 vols written by Günther Hölbl and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-08-27 with total page 895 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the early part of the first century BC, Egyptian cultural artefacts spread to an increasing degree into Palestine and Syria and (via the Greeks and Phoenicians) into the Greek, Italian and Western Phoenician spheres. Following a presentation of the Near Eastern background and a survey of Sardinian findspots, this work lists the types of monument found on Sardinia (from the 8th c. to the Roman period). In the case of both amulets (gods in human and animal form) and scarabs made if steatite and fayence an attempt is made, using a carefully developed typology (both of material and form) and other statistical criteria, to derive a characterisation of groups of differing origin (Egyptian, Eastern Phoenician, Punic). These objects reflect the expansion and adaptation of polupar Egyptian magic. Even the Egyptian motifs on hard-stone Punic scarabs and precious-metal artefacts have a religious significance, which is very closely related to Egyptian concepts. In the same way the Egyptian elements on Punic steles and portions of architecture underline their sacral character. This study pursues methodological goals using evidence from the whole of Mediterranean area.

Book The Phoebe A Hearst Expedition to Naga ed Deir Cemeteries N 2000 and N 2500

Download or read book The Phoebe A Hearst Expedition to Naga ed Deir Cemeteries N 2000 and N 2500 written by Vanessa Davies and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-11-16 with total page 543 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Phoebe A. Hearst Expedition to Naga ed-Deir, Cemeteries N 2000 and N 2500 presents the results of excavations directed by George A. Reisner and led by Arthur C. Mace. The site of Naga ed-Deir, Egypt, is unusual for its continued use over a long period of time (c. 3500 BCE–650 CE). Burials in N 2000 and N 2500 date to the First Intermediate Period/Middle Kingdom and the Coptic era. In keeping with Reisner’s earlier publications of Naga ed-Deir, this volume presents artifacts in chapter-length studies devoted to a particular object type and includes a burial-by-burial description. The excavators’ original drawings, notes, and photographs are complemented by a contemporary analysis of the objects by experts in their subfields.
