Book The Politics of Korean Language Textbooks in the Two Koreas

Download or read book The Politics of Korean Language Textbooks in the Two Koreas written by Dong Bae Lee and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-01 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the politics embedded in the Korean-language textbooks utilised between 1895 and 2019, within the context of one Korea (pre-colonial and colonial eras), the divided Koreas, and an ethnic Korean group residing in Japan (Chongryon). By analysing the inclusions and omissions from Korean-language the author successfully highlights the impact of Korean politics, making clear how rulers have attempted to control their citizens and legitimize their rule by using primary school Korean-language textbooks as a medium for political education and inculcation. It succinctly displays how different visions of ‘ideal citizenship’ have been presented in Korea and traces the resulting shift in views towards neighbouring nations as a result, identifying how different rival countries were demonized at different times. This chapter also shows some consistent omissions, such as the lower classes and marginalized individuals within their respective nations. Presenting recommendations for potential improvements of the content of future textbooks this study will be of interest to students of Asian Studies, Post-colonial Studies, Critical Curriculum Studies, Critical Discourse Studies, and Korean Studies.

Book Science and Technology in Korean History

Download or read book Science and Technology in Korean History written by 박성래 and published by Jain Publishing Company. This book was released on 2005 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally this book was published in Korea under the title Were There Sciences in Korean History? in Korean. The author selected two dozen topics from the history of science in Korea, to present a survey of Korean science to the general public. Now this is translated into English for international readers, with slight modifications to the original Korean version. This is author's way of interpreting Korea's proud scientific traditions, as well as his interpretations of why Korea had to be late in the introduction of advanced Western sciences in the nineteenth century and thereafter, hopefully for the better understanding of Korean history for the general readers, as much as professional historians.

Book Creative Women of Korea The Fifteenth Through the Twentieth Centuries

Download or read book Creative Women of Korea The Fifteenth Through the Twentieth Centuries written by Young-Key Kim-Renaud and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-02-24 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces important contributions in the humanities by a select group of traditional and modern Korean women, from the 15th through the 20th centuries. The literary and artistic works of these women are considered Korean classics, and the featured artists and writers range from a queen, to a courtesan, to a Buddhist nun, to unknown women of Korea. Although women's works were generally meant only to circulate among women, these creative expressions have caught the attention of literary and artistic connoisseurs. By bringing them to light, the book seeks to demonstrate how Korean women have tried to give their lives meaning over the ages through their very diverse, yet common artistic responses to the details and drama of everyday life in Confucian Korea. The stories of these women and their work give us glimpses of their personal views on culture, aesthetics, history, society, politics, morality, and more.

Book Butterfly

Download or read book Butterfly written by Jeannie Ji and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-10 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born as bombs and mortar tore through her native country and raised with the quiet example of strength and honor from her parents, this 13 year old girl became the designated head of her family at the death of her beloved father. Driven to succeed and seeing America as her path to the success her father wanted for her, she emigrated from Korea to the United States in her late teens. As she finds ways to blend her Korean values of family and responsibility with American customs and values, her belief in herself never waivers. In Korea successful people are business owners so she too must become a business owner in her new country. Becoming a successful business owner in a small mid-western town is not easy; expanding that business to become the store of choice for high-end builders and buyers in a nearby city across state lines is even more impressive. As you read her story you'll find a fascinating mix of family loyalties and responsibilities, absolute respect for hard work, and the strength of character to set the example for the next generation in her family. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hope for the Flowers: A must read during this time of the corona virus and civil unrest in 2020. Caterpillars, Butterflies, Life & a real Hope Revolution THE WORLD HAS BEEN COCOONING; LET US EMERGE WITH HOPE. We have all lived through months of strange relationships with ourselves and the world around us. Virtual gatherings have become the norm, while the pain, uncertainty and injustice goes on. What will our new normal possibly become? What new work? How can we do our part to heal the world from whatever limited space we have? How can our United States truly be one nation under God with liberty and JUSTICE FOR ALL? “What might I do to help others during this global crisis? Is likely still your question as well as still mine. I will continue to offer my e-book for $2.99 with my hope that it can strengthen hope and courage in each of you and your children. We will need all we can get! If inspired, please join our Facebook group - Hope (For the Flowers) Revolution. Maybe we can inspire each other to build the better world that's possible. My hope for us is that, like our caterpillar heroes, Stripe and Yellow, we transform in the darkness of the cocoon to something new and totally unexpected. May we each find a way to use this time of darkness to light the way to justice and peace in the world. May we discover our own new beauty as we discover the beauty in our differences. May we each discover our purpose and live with passion this thing called life, while we still can. “How does one become a butterfly” Yellow asks pensively. “You must want to fly so much That you are willing to give up being a caterpillar.” I can't think of anything more transformational and radical than the change that happens when a lowly caterpillar worm becomes a flying beautiful butterfly. And it doesn't end with flying! They find their true purpose, to carry the pollen of love from one flower to another and receive in return the sweet nectar that keeps them alive. What wondrous exchange! Sharing is the answer to so much! I'm so grateful the story seems to reach every culture, and over 3 million have loved and shared the paper version in English and countless more in other languages for 50 years. May each of us and the world flourish after this strange dark cocoon of isolation.

Book Religions of Korea in Practice

Download or read book Religions of Korea in Practice written by Robert E. Buswell Jr. and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 565 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Korea has one of the most diverse religious cultures in the world today, with a range and breadth of religious practice virtually unrivaled by any other country. This volume in the Princeton Readings in Religions series is the first anthology in any language, including Korean, to bring together a comprehensive set of original sources covering the whole gamut of religious practice in both premodern and contemporary Korea. The book's thirty-two chapters help redress the dearth of source materials on Korean religions in Western languages. Coverage includes shamanic rituals for the dead and songs to quiet fussy newborns; Buddhist meditative practices and exorcisms; Confucian geomancy and ancestor rites; contemporary Catholic liturgy; Protestant devotional practices; internal alchemy training in new Korean religions; and North Korean Juche ("self-reliance") ideology, an amalgam of Marxism and Neo-Confucian filial piety focused on worship of the "father," Kim Il Sung. Religions of Korea in Practice provides substantial coverage of contemporary Korean religious practice, especially the various Christian denominations and new indigenous religions. Each chapter includes an extensive translation of original sources on Korean religious practice, accompanied by an introduction that frames the significance of the selections and offers suggestions for further reading. This book will help any reader gain a better appreciation of the rich complexity of Korea's religious culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Koreans: understanding a people and their culture through key words and language. Koreans have a unique character and personality that sets them apart from all other Asians. And although Korean attitudes and behavior may be influenced by the modern world, the Korean mindset is still very much shaped by ancient culture and traditions. As is the case with all ancient cultures created within highly refined and meticulously structured social systems over thousands of years, one of the keys to understanding traditional Korean attitudes and behavior is the language of the people--or more precisely, key words in the language. These key words provide access to the Korean mind--to core concepts and emotions, the attitudes and feelings that make up the Korean psyche. These key terms reveal both the heart and soul of Koreans and provide bridges for communicating and interacting with Koreans on the most fundamental level. In The Korean Mind, Boye Lafayette De Mente explores the meanings and cultural context of the most important "code words" of the Korean language, terms whose significance goes well beyond their literal definitions, providing an insight into Korean culture and the personality of the Korean people. Keywords include: Aboji, Ah-boh-jee -- The "Father Culture" Anae, Ah-negh -- Wives: The Inside People Han Yak, Hahn Yahk -- The Herbal Way to Health Innae, Een-nay -- A Culture of Enduring Katun Sosuy Pap, Kaht-unn Soh-suut Pahp -- Eating from the Same Rice Bowl And over 200 more…
