EFFECTS OF THE ENGLISH INROAD OF 1544, AND NOTICES RELATING TO THE ISLANDS OF CUMBRAY. After the death of James V. an attempt was made by Henry VIII. of England to force a bond of marriage between his son, Edward, and the infant Queen of Scotland (Mary). With this view an expedition was fitted out, under the command of the Earl of Lennox, in 1544, consisting of twelve vessels, having on board 200 hackbutters, 200 archers, and 200 pikemen. It left Bristol in the month of August and proceeded to the west coast of Scotland, when the castle of Brodick was raised to the ground and the neighbourhood given over to be plundered. Lennox then proceeded to Bute, and appears to have experienced little difficulty in taking possession of the castle of Rothesay, which was put into the hands of Sir Rise Mansell and Richard Broke in name of the King of England; thereafter, an unsuccessful attempt was made to gain the castle of Dumbarton, but the expedition was obliged to retreat on learning that 4000 Scots were advancing under Sir George Douglas. The fleet then retired to Bute, but while passing the castle of Dunoon the ships were fired upon by the Earl of Argyle, * a proceeding which incensed the English so much that, after arriving in Bute, Lennox held a council of war, when it was resolved to attack Dunoon, and in pursuance thereof a landing was effected, although opposed by Argyle * On 3d January, 1544, the Earl of Argyle entered into an engagement with the inhabitants of Bute, that in the event of the army of England invading the isle of Bute, he should be bound to afford a safe retreat in Argyleshire for their cattle and effects. The bond is subscribed at Toward, and is witnessed by Lamond of Ineryn, Alexander Campbell brother of the..

Book Tracing Your Scottish Family History on the Internet

Download or read book Tracing Your Scottish Family History on the Internet written by Chris Paton and published by Pen and Sword Family History. This book was released on 2020-04-30 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scotland is a land with a proud and centuries long history that far pre-dates its membership of Great Britain and the United Kingdom. Today in the 21st century it is also a land that has done much to make its historical records accessible, to help those with Caledonian ancestry trace their roots back to earlier times and a world long past. In Tracing Scottish Family History on the Internet, Chris Paton expertly guides the family historian through the many Scottish records offerings available, but also cautions the reader that not every record is online, providing detailed advice on how to use web based finding aids to locate further material across the country and beyond. He also examines social networking and the many DNA platforms that are currently further revolutionising online Scottish research. From the Scottish Government websites offering access to our most important national records, to the holdings of local archives, libraries, family history societies, and online vendors, Chris Paton takes the reader across Scotland, from the Highlands and Islands, through the Central Belt and the Lowlands, and across the diaspora, to explore the various flavours of Scottishness that have bound us together as a nation for so long.
