Book excerpt: In 2015, Cara Achterberg’s Pennsylvania farm became a haven for Operation Paws for Homes, which rescues dogs from high-kill shelters in the rural south and shuttles them north to foster homes. Nine puppies arrived with less than a day’s notice; a heart-worm positive dog; a deeply traumatized stray pup from Iraq; and countless others who just needed a gentle touch and a warm place to sleep. The stories of these remarkable dogs—including an eighty-pound bloodhound who sang arias for the neighbors—and the joy they bring to Cara and her family (along with a few chewed sofa cushions) fill the pages of this touching and inspiring book. When asked how she can possibly say goodbye to that many lovable pups, Cara says, “If I don’t give this one away, I can’t possibly save another.” Filled with humanity and hope, Another Good Dog will take the reader on a journey of smiles, laughs, and tears—and lead us to wonder how many other good dogs are out there and what we can do to help.

Book excerpt: A challenging foster dog invites an experienced foster mama to explore where the endless stream of unwanted dogs is coming from and how it will ever end. After welcoming her one hundredth foster dog (and her puppies), Cara grabs her best friend, fills a van with donations, and heads south to discover what is really happening in the rural shelters where her foster dogs originate. What she discovers will break her heart and compel her to share the story of heroes and villains and plenty of good dogs, in the hope of changing this world. Cara fosters her most challenging dog yet and she and her husband are pushed to the brink of what they will do to save a dog. Cara wonders why the need seems endless. She hatches a plan to head south on a Thelma & Louise-style road trip. Each stop exposes more of the realities of rural animal shelters. The hopelessness seems unsurmountable until they discover one shelter, deep in South Carolina that has found the answers and is truly a ‘no-kill’ shelter. One Hundred Dogs and Counting will introduce the reader to many good dogs, but also to inspirational people sacrificing personal lives and fortunes to save deserving animals. It will offer not just the entertaining stories of plenty of loveable good dogs, but the real problem of unwanted animals in our rural shelters, and how the reader can be part of the solution.

Book The Stories of Bearry Bummy Bonnie the Balloon and Heidi the Dog

Download or read book The Stories of Bearry Bummy Bonnie the Balloon and Heidi the Dog written by Helen Hoag and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2016-03-31 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mothers, fathers, grandparents and baby sitters will find in these three stories a group of simple tales meant to be read to young children approximately between the ages of two and six years of age. For the preschooler and kindergartener learning to read, they are examples of what can be read that do not frighten or cause real stress but have just enough tension to hold their interest. They may also be some of the first stories that a child can read themselves. The story of Bonnie the Balloon is pure fantasy designed to take advantage of the very young child`s tendency to personalize their toys, stuffed animals, toy cars, dolls ,etc. Giving any of these articles names such as Bearry the Teddy Bear is a common practice and allows the child to have their toys share their experiences as they become aware of the world outside their home. It also acquaints the growing child with a now obsolete method of advertising, which they may never again experience. The Scary Adventures of Bummy the Bunnie carries on this personalization of toys, which in this case are stuffed animals, the presence of which might help to relieve the tension a child may develop facing difficult surgery in a major hospital. This actually was the situation that inspired this story as the child faced the closure of a septal heart defect that had not been detected before birth. At the time of the surgery no heart/lung machine was available. The Heidi Story reacquaints the young child with the origin of the first pet they may experience in their home. Not all pets can be such a close part of a child`s life but if they can the child will want to know all they can about them. Once again this story is inspired by actual happenings and is meant to be possibly an initial tale in the adventures of this remarkable animal. This story has two authors as it was not finished before the original author passed away.

Book excerpt: "Bonnie Jo Campbell is a master of rural America’s postindustrial landscape." —Boston Globe Named by the Guardian as one of our top ten writers of rural noir, Bonnie Jo Campbell is a keen observer of life and trouble in rural America, and her working-class protagonists can be at once vulnerable, wise, cruel, and funny. The strong but flawed women of Mothers, Tell Your Daughters must negotiate a sexually charged atmosphere as they love, honor, and betray one another against the backdrop of all the men in their world. Such richly fraught mother-daughter relationships can be lifelines, anchors, or they can sink a woman like a stone. In "My Dog Roscoe," a new bride becomes obsessed with the notion that her dead ex-boyfriend has returned to her in the form of a mongrel. In "Blood Work, 1999," a phlebotomist's desire to give away everything to the needy awakens her own sensuality. In "Home to Die," an abused woman takes revenge on her bedridden husband. In these fearless and darkly funny tales about women and those they love, Campbell’s spirited American voice is at its most powerful.

Download or read book The Other End of the Leash written by Patricia McConnell, Ph.D. and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2009-02-19 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn to communicate with your dog—using their language “Good reading for dog lovers and an immensely useful manual for dog owners.”—The Washington Post An Applied Animal Behaviorist and dog trainer with more than twenty years’ experience, Dr. Patricia McConnell reveals a revolutionary new perspective on our relationship with dogs—sharing insights on how “man’s best friend” might interpret our behavior, as well as essential advice on how to interact with our four-legged friends in ways that bring out the best in them. After all, humans and dogs are two entirely different species, each shaped by its individual evolutionary heritage. Quite simply, humans are primates and dogs are canids (as are wolves, coyotes, and foxes). Since we each speak a different native tongue, a lot gets lost in the translation. This marvelous guide demonstrates how even the slightest changes in our voices and in the ways we stand can help dogs understand what we want. Inside you will discover: • How you can get your dog to come when called by acting less like a primate and more like a dog • Why the advice to “get dominance” over your dog can cause problems • Why “rough and tumble primate play” can lead to trouble—and how to play with your dog in ways that are fun and keep him out of mischief • How dogs and humans share personality types—and why most dogs want to live with benevolent leaders rather than “alpha wanna-bes!” Fascinating, insightful, and compelling, The Other End of the Leash is a book that strives to help you connect with your dog in a completely new way—so as to enrich that most rewarding of relationships.
