Book Muslims and Political Participation in Britain

Download or read book Muslims and Political Participation in Britain written by Timothy Peace and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new volume showcases the latest research into Muslim political participation both in terms of electoral politics and civil society initiatives. Muslims play a prominent role in British political life yet what do we actually know about the involvement of British Muslims beyond the existence of a handful of Muslim MPs? What is unique about political participation in Muslim communities? All the major parties actively seek to court a ‘Muslim electorate’ but does such a phenomenon exist? Despite the impact that Muslims have had on election campaigns and their roles in various political institutions, research on this topic remains scant. Indeed, much of the existing work was couched within the broader areas of the participation of ethnic minorities or the impact of race on electoral politics. The chapters in this volume address this lacuna by highlighting different aspects of Muslim participation in British politics. They investigate voting patterns and election campaigns, civil society and grassroots political movements, the engagement of young people and the participation of Muslims in formal political institutions. Written in an accessible style, this book will be of interest to students and scholars of political participation and religious studies.

Book Administration and Expenditure of the Chancellor s Departments 2007 08

Download or read book Administration and Expenditure of the Chancellor s Departments 2007 08 written by Great Britain. Parliament. House of Commons. Treasury Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2009 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Treasury Sub-Committee calls for much greater transparency from the Treasury in accounting for the liabilities taken on by the nationalisation and part-nationalisation of financial institutions. The report recommends that these disclosures appear in the annual Treasury resource accounts. Furthermore they should be at least as comprehensive as those made by major corporations and go further than meeting the minimum acceptable accounting standards. In particular, the Report notes that the Treasury's 2007-08 Annual Report and Accounts cover the Government's financial relationship with Northern Rock but do not comment on its performance under temporary public ownership. Given the level of interest in the fully nationalised institutions of Northern Rock and Bradford & Bingley, and the Treasury's role in their governance, the report recommends that key performance information for these institutions be published in the resource accounts as well. The wholesale nationalisation of Northern Rock, and Bradford & Bingley has created governance responsibilities for the Treasury while these entities remain under public ownership. The Government's announcements of October 2008 created further responsibilities regarding the oversight of part-nationalised banks, and created a new body, UK Financial Investments (UKFI). The report calls for UKFI to report annually to Parliament and to be accountable to the Treasury Committee. The Committee wants the Government to identify and publish performance indicators for UKFI, and to report against these measures on a six-monthly basis. All these developments are additional challenges for the Treasury and require it to act in areas its current staff base may not be fully equipped for or familiar with. The Government must ensure the Treasury is sufficiently resourced to manage the extended responsibilities arising from the economic downturn, especially those regarding financial stability.

Book The Conduct of Lord Moonie Lord Snape Lord Truscott and Lord Taylor of Blackburn Report

Download or read book The Conduct of Lord Moonie Lord Snape Lord Truscott and Lord Taylor of Blackburn Report written by and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2009 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the 2nd report of the Committee for Privileges of the 2008-09 session (HLP 88-I, session 2008-09, ISBN 9780108444227) and looks at the conduct of Lord Moonie, Lord Snape, Lord Truscott and Lord Taylor of Blackburn. The background to this report, was a set of allegations by the The Sunday Times on 25 January 2009, stating that the peers had been willing to engage in paid advocacy. The Sub-Committee on Lords' Interests has reported on the conduct of the peers reaching the conclusion that three of the four members (Lord Snape, Truscott and Taylor) had breached the Code of Conduct. The main Committee in this report has examined the Sub-Committee's findings for each of the peers, along with three appeals from Lords Snape, Truscott and Taylor and a personal statement by one of the peers to the Committee. The Committee followed procedures as laid out by an earlier report (HLP 205, session 2007-08 - The Code of Conduct, ISBN 9780104014042). The Committee sets out a summary of conclusions in this report, focusing on the key points of the issue between the Sub-Committee and the three members who submitted appeals. The conclusions reached by the Committee, include: an endorsement of the Sub-Committee's exoneration of Lord Moonie of any breach of the Code of Conduct, but that he did make a number of unwise comments in respect of the Code of Conduct and should make a personal statement of apology to the House; the Committee upholds the appeal of Lord Snape against the Sub-Committee's findings and that he did not express clear willingness to exercise parliamentary influence in return for financial inducements, but he also demonstrated an inappropriate attitude to the rules governing the conduct of members and should apologise to the House; the Committee upholds the Sub-Committee's findings in respect of both Lord Truscott and Lord Taylor of Blackburn, whose conversations with undercover journalists, showed a failure to act on their personal honour and therefore breached the Code and that both peers should be suspended from the service of the House until the end of the current session. Volume 2, Evidence is also available see (ISBN 9780104425176).
