Book Ethnic Business

Download or read book Ethnic Business written by Brian C. Folk and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of ethnic Chinese business in Southeast Asia in catalyzing economic development has been hotly debated - and often misunderstood - throughout cycles of boom and bust. This book critically examines some of the key features attributed to Chinese business: business-government relations, the family firm, trust and networks, and supposed 'Asian' values. The in-depth case studies that feature in the book reveal considerable diversity among these firms and the economic and political networks in which they manoeuvre. With contributions from leading scholars and under the impressive editorship of Jomo and Folk, Ethnic Business is a well-written, important contribution to not only students of Asian business and economics, but also professionals with an interest in those areas.

Book East Asian Business in the New World

Download or read book East Asian Business in the New World written by Shaomin Li and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-09-08 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: East Asian Business in the New World: Helping Old Economies Revitalize discusses how to conduct business in East Asia. The main objective of the book is to help American workers and businesses gain competitive advantages in a global marketplace in which the emerging Asian economies are rapidly becoming major players. The American economy appears to be on decline, especially relative to the rapidly rising economies in places such as China. To revitalize the American economy and those of the ‘old world’, we must pay close attention to the economies with which America competes. The objective of this book is two-fold, with an initial focus on the opportunities and challenges of doing business in East Asia that includes tactics that will help readers understand Asian economies and business practices so that they can compete more successfully in the region. Secondly, the book seeks to teach readers how the U.S. can learn from East Asia in revitalizing its own economy. This is what sets the book apart as it analyzes the social institutions in major Asian countries, including the political, economic, and cultural institutions, and then compares them with the institutions in the U.S., identifying the strengths and weaknesses of U.S. institutions and providing strategic and policy recommendations that may help the U.S. economy and American firms compete in the global marketplace. Discuss how America and older economies can learn from Asia Provides a theoretical framework of rule-based vs. relation-based governance to help readers understand the differences in doing business in Asia vs. doing business in mature economies Offers business insights based on the author’s business experience in Asia Approaches the topic from a comparative perspective

Book The Key to the Asian Miracle

Download or read book The Key to the Asian Miracle written by Jose Edgardo Campos and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2001-06-07 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Easily the most informed and comprehensive analysis to date on how and why East Asian countries have achieved sustained high economic growth rates, [this book] substantially advances our understanding of the key interactions between the governors and governed in the development process. Students and practitioners alike will be referring to Campos and Root's series of excellent case studies for years to come." Richard L. Wilson, The Asia Foundation Eight countries in East Asia--Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia--have become known as the "East Asian miracle" because of their economies' dramatic growth. In these eight countries real per capita GDP rose twice as fast as in any other regional grouping between 1965 and 1990. Even more impressive is their simultaneous significant reduction in poverty and income inequality. Their success is frequently attributed to economic policies, but the authors of this book argue that those economic policies would not have worked unless the leaders of the countries made them credible to their business communities and citizens. Jose Edgardo Campos and Hilton Root challenge the popular belief that East Asia's high performers grew rapidly because they were ruled by authoritarian leaders. They show that these leaders had to collaborate with various sectors of their population to create an environment that was conducive to sustained growth. This required them to persuade the business community that their investments would not be expropriated and to convince the broader population that their short-term sacrifices would be rewarded in the future. Many of the countries achieved business cooperation by creating consultative groups, which the authors call deliberation councils, to enhance accountability and stability. They also obtained popular support through a variety of wealth-sharing measures such as land reform, worker cooperatives, and wider access to education. F

Book International Trade in East Asia

Download or read book International Trade in East Asia written by Takatoshi Ito and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-11-01 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The practice of trading across international borders has undergone a series of changes with great consequences for the world trading community, the result of new trade agreements, a number of financial crises, the emergence of the World Trade Organization, and countless other less obvious developments. In International Trade in East Asia, a group of esteemed contributors provides a summary of empirical factors of international trade specifically as they pertain to East Asian countries such as China, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan. Comprised of twelve fascinating studies, International Trade in East Asia highlights many of the trading practices between countries within the region as well as outside of it. The contributors bring into focus some of the region's endemic and external barriers to international trade and discuss strategies for improving productivity and fostering trade relationships. Studies on some of the factors that drive exports, the influence of research and development, the effects of foreign investment, and the ramifications of different types of protectionism will particularly resonate with the financial and economic communities who are trying to keep pace with this dramatically altered landscape.

Book Culture Organization and Management in East Asia

Download or read book Culture Organization and Management in East Asia written by Harry Wels and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2002 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current management books and manuals make a popular topic out of doing business in China, and they operate on the assumption that Chinese business culture strongly contrasts Western. However, evidence suggests that tensions between value and market and community and individual are part of every market-entering society, while only the reactions differ. This new book raises questions about the ways personal relations are dealt with in China, specifically relations between Chinese and Western partners. Social relationships carry considerable weight in Chinese culture, with special emphasis on the role of social connections and rules of conduct. The chapters of this book analyse and assess the methods for harmonising business relations across cultures.

Book The Economic Organization of East Asian Capitalism

Download or read book The Economic Organization of East Asian Capitalism written by Marco Orru and published by SAGE. This book was released on 1997 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: East Asia's dynamic entrance into the global economy has provided a fruitful avenue for research in economic sociology. In this perceptive and timely volume, authors Nicole Woolsey Biggart, Gary G. Hamilton, and the late Marco Orru theorize Asian capitalism and analyze the economic organization of East Asia. Presenting differing dimensions of a Weberian perspective, the authors first provide a theoretical grounding, then consider capitalism in East Asia comparatively, and finally contrast the economies of East Asia and Europe. The Economic Organization of East Asian Capitalism shows how radically different social and cultural institutions can lead to economies that are organized and work in remarkably similar ways. This thought-provoking volume will be essential for students and professionals in the fields of political science, management, third world studies, sociology, international relations, international business, and cross-cultural studies.

Book Chinese Entrepreneurship and Asian Business Networks

Download or read book Chinese Entrepreneurship and Asian Business Networks written by Thomas Menkhoff and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The degree to which the extensive business networks of ethnic Chinese in Asia succeed because of ethnic characteristics, or simply because of the sound application of good business practice, is a key question of great current concern to those interested in business, management and economic development in Asia. This book brings together a range of leading experts who present original new research findings and important new thinking on this vital subject. Based on rich empirical research data and a multidisciplinary explanatory framework, this book assesses the role, characteristics and challenges of Chinese entrepreneurship and business networks in various East and Southeast Asian countries: the People's Republic of China, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, and Australia. Chinese Entrepreneurship and Asian Business Networks demonstrates that Chinese network capitalism is contingent upon, for example, time, place, institutional frameworks, and that explanatory approaches of Chinese economic behaviour which stress culture and ethnicity are too simplistic.
