Book History heritage and colonialism

Download or read book History heritage and colonialism written by Kynan Gentry and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2015-04-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History, heritage, and colonialism explores the politics of history-making and interest in preserving the material remnants of the past in late-nineteenth and early-twentieth-century colonial society, looking at both indigenous pasts and those of European origin. Focusing on New Zealand, but also covering the Australian and Canadian experiences, it explores how different groups and political interests have sought to harness historical narrative in support of competing visions of identity and memory. Considering this within the frames of the local and national as well as of empire, the book offers a valuable critique of the study of colonial identity-making and cultures of colonisation. This book offers important insights for societies negotiating the legacy of a colonial past in a global present, and will be of particular value to all those concerned with museum, heritage, and tourism studies, as well as imperial history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Encyclopedia of Nineteenth-Century Photography is the first comprehensive encyclopedia of world photography up to the beginning of the twentieth century. It sets out to be the standard, definitive reference work on the subject for years to come. Its coverage is global – an important ‘first’ in that authorities from all over the world have contributed their expertise and scholarship towards making this a truly comprehensive publication. The Encyclopedia presents new and ground-breaking research alongside accounts of the major established figures in the nineteenth century arena. Coverage includes all the key people, processes, equipment, movements, styles, debates and groupings which helped photography develop from being ‘a solution in search of a problem’ when first invented, to the essential communication tool, creative medium, and recorder of everyday life which it had become by the dawn of the twentieth century. The sheer breadth of coverage in the 1200 essays makes the Encyclopedia of Nineteenth-Century Photography an essential reference source for academics, students, researchers and libraries worldwide.

Book The People and The Land Te Tangata me Te Whenua

Download or read book The People and The Land Te Tangata me Te Whenua written by Judith Binney and published by Bridget Williams Books. This book was released on 2021-05-06 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a visual and narrative history of two communities, Māori and Pākehā, during a hundred years of settlement in New Zealand. It reveals how the two cultures saw their history through very different eyes: for Pākehā, it was a story of establishing an ‘English island’ in the Pacific; for Māori, a tale of loss and exclusion. But by setting out these conflicting understandings of the past, the book also seeks to bridge cultural differences through the sharing of knowledge. Written by three leading historians and lavishly illustrated, it is a stunning presentation of New Zealand’s history.

Book Visions of Nature

    Book Details:
  • Author : Dr. Jarrod Hore
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press
  • Release : 2022-04-19
  • ISBN : 0520420497
  • Pages : 352 pages

Download or read book Visions of Nature written by Dr. Jarrod Hore and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2022-04-19 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Visions of Nature revives the work of late nineteenth-century landscape photographers who shaped the environmental attitudes of settlers in the colonies of the Tasman World and in California. Despite having little association with one another, these photographers developed remarkably similar visions of nature. They rode a wave of interest in wilderness imagery and made pictures that were hung in settler drawing rooms, perused in albums, projected in theaters, and re-created on vacations. In both the American West and the Tasman World, landscape photography fed into settler belonging and produced new ways of thinking about territory and history. During this key period of settler revolution, a generation of photographers came to associate “nature” with remoteness, antiquity, and emptiness, a perspective that disguised the realities of Indigenous presence and reinforced colonial fantasies of environmental abundance. This book lifts the work of these photographers out of their provincial contexts and repositions it within a new comparative frame.
