Download or read book Boom and Bust written by William Quinn and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-08-06 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do stock and housing markets sometimes experience amazing booms followed by massive busts and why is this happening more and more frequently? In order to answer these questions, William Quinn and John D. Turner take us on a riveting ride through the history of financial bubbles, visiting, among other places, Paris and London in 1720, Latin America in the 1820s, Melbourne in the 1880s, New York in the 1920s, Tokyo in the 1980s, Silicon Valley in the 1990s and Shanghai in the 2000s. As they do so, they help us understand why bubbles happen, and why some have catastrophic economic, social and political consequences whilst others have actually benefited society. They reveal that bubbles start when investors and speculators react to new technology or political initiatives, showing that our ability to predict future bubbles will ultimately come down to being able to predict these sparks.

Book excerpt: What are we not seeing? Our naked eyes see only a thin sliver of reality. We are blind in comparison to the X-rays that peer through skin, and the animals that can see in infrared or ultraviolet or with 360-degree vision. In The Reality Bubble, Ziya Tong illuminates this hidden world and takes us on a journey to examine ten of humanity’s biggest blind spots. What she reveals is not on the things we didn’t evolve to see but, more dangerously, the blindness of modern society. Fast-paced, utterly fascinating and deeply humane, this vitally important book gives voice to the sense we’ve all had – that there is more to the world than meets the eye.

Book excerpt: He was known around the world as the "Bubble Boy". Now told for the first time by the person who was his caretaker and confidant, Bursting the Bubble is the heart-rending story of the life and death of David Vetter. Due to the scientific zeal of doctors and religious authorities, and the compliance of his trusting family, he lived his life in a sterile chamber bereft of human touch from birth until a few days before his death at age 12 and a half. Mary Ada Murphy, Ph.D., was a child psychologist on staff at St. Luke's-Texas Children's Hospital throughout David Vetter's life and became his closest friend and confidant. She was with him when he died. She received the Hadassah Myrtle Wreath Award in 1985 in recognition of her outstanding achievement in the psychological support of David Vetter and his family. Raymond J. Lawrence, whom Murphy entrusted with the Bursting the Bubble manuscript and writes an introduction to it, was the hospital chaplain in place during David's early years, and who convened the only formal ethics consultation on the Vetter case.

Download or read book Burst This written by Frank McKinney and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frank McKinney continues his international bestseller tradition of delivering contrarian perspectives and strategies for generational success in real estate. Tired of all the doom and gloom? Frank McKinney helps you wash away the worry—the anxiety financial theorists and misguided media constantly dump into the real-estate marketplace. During his twenty-five-year career, this 'real estate rock czar' (The Wall Street Journal) and undisputed 'king of the ready-made dream homes' (USA Today) has not only survived but thrived through all economic conditions by taking the contrarian position and making his own markets. Burst This! Frank McKinney's Bubble-Proof Real Estate Strategies clearly shows you how to prepare for and time the upswings while insulating your real estate investments from the inherent, inevitable corrective cycle. The truth is that opportunities to profit abound during every phase. Lots of people prosper in boom times, of course, but many set themselves up to make even bigger money during a crisis/correction. Why not do both, now? Investors of all experience levels learn to turn the bubble mentality inside out, transforming it into a protective force field and a crystal ball, allowing you to accurately forecast your real estate future. You will see how you can aspire not just to survival, but also to what McKinney calls "thrival," developing your ability to capitalize on market conditions. McKinney takes you on a factual real estate retrospective, a "post mortem" of the housing markets, beginning with the mid-seventies to today. By studying six distinct real estate cycles over the last thirty-five years, he sifts out critical, recurring trends that highlight significant opportunities while signaling you where history might repeat itself. You will see exactly how McKinney has successfully handled these predictable cycles with timeless financial and investment strategies. • Hear a resounding counter-opinion to the doomsayers and the get-rich-quick schemers who crawl out of the cesspool whenever the market's pendulum swings too far in one direction--and guard against falling into their traps. • Discover why the positive and negative excitement (a.k.a. greed and fear) associated with boom and bust times are your worst enemies, brought out by nothing more than recurring market cycles. • Get the evidentiary truth, not the fear-mongering or the sugar-coating, on real-estate's ups and downs. • Pinpoint the real-estate investments, and a proven approach to marketing them, that have consistently shown immunity to the market's volatile fluctuations.

Download or read book Expand Your Bubble written by Amy Lane Carst and published by Evolution of Id. This book was released on 2018-04-18 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge is formed within our social bubble. As we expand our bubble, we grow our knowledge and gain more tools to tackle life's problems and lead a happier life. Amy Carst shares her inspiring and acclaimed perspective by taking her audience on a journey, not only by relating her travel experiences but through finding new viewpoints and diverse connections. Expand Your Bubble is a collection of interviews with people from all walks of life: refugees, religious leaders, Atheists, squatters, the ultra wealthy, communists, trans women, addicts, parents of children with severe disabilities, Arabs, Africans, humanitarians, poets, mediums, and more. With contributions by Professor Noam Chomsky; Sapiens author Yuval Noah Harari; founder of Sirius XM and America's highest paid female CEO, Martine Rothblatt; and Arun Gandhi, Mahatma Gandhi's grandson. By connecting with people from different backgrounds, races, cultures, and lifestyles, we expand our bubble and the resources within it. Every problem has a million solutions, but when we only spend time with people who look and think like us, we only have access to a few of those solutions. The more solutions we have to problems, the less difficult life becomes. When life feels easier and less restrictive, we have the time and confidence to choose what we want. When we are the architects of our own lives, life is exciting. When life is exciting, we are happier.

Book Bursting the Bubble Rationality in a Seemingly Irrational Market

Download or read book Bursting the Bubble Rationality in a Seemingly Irrational Market written by David F. DeRosa and published by CFA Institute Research Foundation. This book was released on 2021-04-02 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The presence of speculative bubbles in capital markets (an important area of interest in financial history) is widely accepted across many circles. Talk of them is pervasive in the media and especially in the popular financial press. Bubbles are thought to be found primarily in the stock market, which is our main interest, although bubbles are said to occur in other markets. Bubbles go hand in hand with the notion that markets can be irrational. The academic community has a great interest in bubbles, and it has produced scholarly literature that is voluminous. For some economists, doing bubble research is like joining the vanguard of a Kuhnian paradigm shift in economic thinking. Not so fast. If bubbles did exist, they would pose a serious challenge to neoclassical finance. Bubbles would contradict the ideas that markets are rational or work in an informationally efficient manner. That’s what makes the topic of bubbles interesting. This book reviews and evaluates the academic literature as well as some popular investment books on the possible existence of speculative bubbles in the stock market. The main question is whether there is convincing empirical evidence that bubbles exist. A second question is whether the theoretical concepts that have been advanced for bubbles make them plausible. The reader will discover that I am skeptical that bubbles actually exist. But I do not think I or anyone else will ever be able to conclusively prove that there has never been a bubble. From studying the literature and from reading history, I find that many famous purported bubbles reflect inaccurate history or mistakes in analysis or simply cannot be shown to have existed. In other instances, bubbles might have existed. But in each of those cases, there are credible rational explanations. And good evidence exists for the idea that even if bubbles do exist, they are not of great importance to understanding the stock market.

Book Bursting the Big Data Bubble

Download or read book Bursting the Big Data Bubble written by Jay Liebowitz and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2014-07-25 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As we get caught up in the quagmire of Big Data and analytics, it remains critically important to be able to reflect and apply insights, experience, and intuition to your decision-making process. In fact, a recent research study at Tel Aviv University found that executives who relied on their intuition were 90 percent accurate in their decisions. Bursting the Big Data Bubble: The Case for Intuition-Based Decision Making focuses on this intuition-based decision making. The book does not discount data-based decision making, especially for decisions that are important and complex. Instead, it emphasizes the importance of applying intuition, gut feel, spirituality, experiential learning, and insight as key factors in the executive decision-making process. Explaining how intuition is a product of past experience, learning, and ambient factors, the text outlines methods that will help to enhance your data-driven decision-making process with intuition-based decision making. The first part of the book, the "Research Track", presents contributions from leading researchers worldwide on the topic of intuition-based decision making as applied to management. In the second part of the book, the "Practice Track," global executives and senior managers in industry, government, universities, and not-for-profits present vignettes that illustrate how they have used their intuition in making key decisions. The research part of the book helps to frame the problem and address leading research in intuition-based decision making. The second part then explains how to apply these intuition-based concepts and issues in your own decision-making process.

Book When Bubbles Burst

Download or read book When Bubbles Burst written by John P. Calverley and published by Nicholas Brealey. This book was released on 2011-01-11 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surviving the financial fallout John Calverley's new book is about understanding what's going on, how policy impinges on it, what investors can do and what is likely to happen. This extremely topical and timely new book from the well-known economist and Head of Research, Standard Chartered Bank is the first book to examine in depth the financial fallout of 2008 and explore the implications and solutions for individuals, companies and central banks. His previous book, Bubbles and How to Survive Them predicted the current financial situation. He warned vigorously of the danger from the housing bubble and warned that stock prices might take off again and reach vulnerable levels (as indeed occurred in 2006-7.) This essential readable, non-technical guide is essential reading for everyone and particularly for investment professionals everywhere. In this new book - an investor's survival kit - he: * Outlines the crises we now face and reviews how we got here. * Looks closely at the huge housing bubbles in UK and the US, as well as those in Australia, Spain, Japan and Hong Kong. * Explores the anatomy of bubbles and presents a checklist for identifying them. * Tells the story of how the housing bubble led to the current financial crisis and how far prices might fall, focusing on household debt as the value of household assets collapse. * Examines strategies for investors, who must try to avoid bubbles or, more dangerously, seek them out and ride them. * Reveals what will happen next.
