Book excerpt: Next-generation high-speed Internet backbone networks will be required to support a broad range of emerging applications which may not only require significant bandwidth, but may also have strict quality of service (QoS) requirements. Furthermore, the traffic from such applications are expected to be highly bursty in nature. For such traffic, the allocation of static fixed-bandwidth circuits may lead to the over-provisioning of bandwidth resources in order to meet QoS requirements. Optical burst switching (OBS) is a promising new technique which attempts to address the problem of efficiently allocating resources for bursty traffic. In OBS, incoming data is assembled into bursts at the edges of the network, and when the burst is ready to be sent, resources in the network are reserved only for the duration of the burst. The reservation of resources is typically made by an out-of-band one-way control message which precedes the burst by some offset time. By reserving resources only for the duration of the burst, a greater degree of utilization may be achieved in the network. This book provides an overview of optical burst switching. Design and research issues involved in the development of OBS networks are discussed, and approaches to providing QoS in OBS networks are presented. Joint source-channel decoding is now seen as a viable alternative to separate decoding of source and channel codes, if the protocol layers are taken into account. A joint source/protocol/channel approach is thus addressed in this book: all levels of the protocol stack are considered, showing how the information in each layer influences the others. This book provides the tools to show how cross-layer and joint source-channel coding and decoding are now compatible with present-day mobile and wireless networks, with a particular application to the key area of video transmission to mobiles. We use the word "content" instead of "information" or "data" because we want to cover not only raw data but also presentation quality. The fast growth of the Internet has already made it the key infrastructure for information dissemination,education,business and entertainment. While the client-server model has been the most widely adopted paradigm for the WWW, the desire to provide more value-added services in the delivery layer has led to the concept of an active network, where content-driven, intelligent computation will be performed to provide quality-of-service for content presentation and best-?t client demand. These value-added services typically aim to enhance information security, provide pervasive Internet access, and improve application robustness, system/network performance, knowledge extraction,etc. They are realized by incorporating sophisticated mechanisms at the delivery layer,which is transparent to the content providers and Web surfers. Consequently, the notion of "Content Computing" has emerged. Content computing is a new paradigm for coordinating distributed systems and intelligent networks, based on a peer-to-peer model and with value-added processing of the application-specific contents at the - livery layer. This paradigm is especially useful to pervasive lightweight client devices such as mobile and portable end-user terminals with a wide variation of hardware/software configurations. This year, the workshop was held in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu, China. We received 194 high-quality papers from 11 regions, namely PR China, Korea, Singapore, Japan, United States, Canada, Australia, Germany, Taiwan, Italy, and Hong Kong. Totally, 62 papers were accepted and presented in the workshop.
