Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Burke Select Works The Mountain in the Convention had produced the domination of Robespierre. The fall of Robespierre had been followed by the Thermidorian reaction, and the White Terror: and the Conven tion, rapidly becoming more and more odious to the people, had at length dissolved, bequeathing to France as the result of its labours the constitution of the Directory. In the midst of all these changes France had been assailed by all Europe in arms. Yet she had shown no signal 'of distress. Neither the ferocious contests of her leaders, nor their deadly re venges, nor their gross follies, nor their reckless policy, had wasted her elastic powers. On the contrary, France was ani mated with a new life. That liberty which she had purchased with so. Many crimes and sacrifices she had proved herself able to defend. Nor was this all. In vindicating that liberty, she had wrested from her assailants trophies which threw into the shade the conquests of the Grand Monarque himself. In less than three years she had become actual mistress of nearly all that lay between the Rhine, the Alps, the Pyrenees, and the ocean, and potentially mistress of all the rest. She had attained a position, which, if maintained, would prove the destruction of the old balance of power in Europe. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters of Edmund Burke: A Selection This volume is merely a selection from the published correspondence of Edmund Burke; and it is mainly intended to illustrate the ample selection of his writings and speeches already printed in this series. For this purpose it has been necessary somewhat rigidly to exclude all correspondence of a personal or literary character. A few early letters have been printed to illustrate a Burke who could, at least in some degree, unbend and some verses have been allowed to appear, not because they do not endanger Burke's reputation, but because they amply demonstrate that even he was once young. But, for the most part, it is upon his favourite topics of Ireland, America, and the French Revolution that these letters dwell. I.-OBSERVATIONS ON THE STATE OF THE COMPANY'S AFFAIRS IN INDIA. In order to enable the House to adopt the most proper means for regulating the British government in India, and for promoting the happiness of the natives who live under its authority or influence, your Committee hold it expedient to collect into distinct points of view the circumstances by which that government appears to them to be most essentially disordered, and to explain fully the principles of policy and the course of conduct by which the natives of all ranks and orders have been reduced to their present state of depression and misery. Book excerpt: Burke has endured as the permanent manual of political wisdom without which statesmen are as sailors on an uncharted sea. -- Harold Laski Originally published by Oxford University Press in the 1890s, the famed Payne edition of Select Works of Burke is universally revered by students of English history and political thought. Volume 1 contains Burke's brilliant defense of the American colonists' complaints of British policy, including "Thoughts on the Cause of the Present Discontents" (1770), "Speech on American Taxation" (1774), and "Speech on Conciliation" (1775). Volume 2 consists of Burke's renowned Reflections on the Revolution in France. Volume 3 presents Burke's Four Letters on the Proposals for Peace with the Regicide Directory of France--generally styled Letters on a Regicide Peace (1795-1796). The Letters, Payne believed, deserve to "rank even before [Burke's] Reflections, and to be called the writer's masterpiece." Faithfully reproduced in each volume are E. J. Payne's notes and introductory essays. Francis Canavan, one of the great Burke scholars of the twentieth century, has added forewords and a biographical note on Payne. In the companion volume, Miscellaneous Writings, Canavan has collected seven of Burke's major contributions to English political thinking on representation in Parliament, on economics, on the political oppression of the peoples of India and Ireland, and on the enslavement of African blacks. The volume concludes with a select bibliography on Edmund Burke. The volumes complement the Liberty Fund editions of Burke's A Vindication of Natural Society, edited by Frank N. Pagano, and Further Reflections on the Revolution in France, edited by Daniel E. Ritchie. Francis Canavan (1917-2009) was Professor of Political Science at Fordham University from 1966 until his retirement in 1988.
