Book The Senator

Download or read book The Senator written by Richard E. Burke and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2003-12-31 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1971 Richard Burke, a freshman at Georgetown University, volunteered his services to the offices of his political idol, Senator Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts. Through ability, hard work, and dedication, Burke rose in the next four years to become one of the Senator's closest staff members. In 1977 he was made Kennedy's personal assistant; after his appointment in 1978 as administrative assistant - the youngest in the Senate - he came to know Edward M. Kennedy perhaps more intimately than anyone outside the closed circle of the Senator's family. He was often the last to see the Senator at night and the first to see him in the morning. This book is the account of what Richard Burke witnessed and experienced during his decade at the Senator's right hand. It is neither a full biography nor an examination of Kennedy's long career in government. Rather, it is the history of a young man who shared the Senator's professional and personal lives during a time marked by exhilarating public achievements and tragic secret misconduct. His story is not only the chronicle of a shattered idol, but of Richard Burke's own fall from grace, and eventual recovery. Burke does not shrink from confronting his own faults, and he agrees with the Senator: It is time for him to confront his.

Book Empire and Revolution

Download or read book Empire and Revolution written by Richard Bourke and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-09-08 with total page 1029 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major new account of one of the leading philosopher-statesmen of the eighteenth century Edmund Burke (1730–97) lived during one of the most extraordinary periods of world history. He grappled with the significance of the British Empire in India, fought for reconciliation with the American colonies, and was a vocal critic of national policy during three European wars. He also advocated reform in Britain and became a central protagonist in the great debate on the French Revolution. Drawing on the complete range of printed and manuscript sources, Empire and Revolution offers a vivid reconstruction of the major concerns of this outstanding statesman, orator, and philosopher. In restoring Burke to his original political and intellectual context, this book overturns the conventional picture of a partisan of tradition against progress and presents a multifaceted portrait of one of the most captivating figures in eighteenth-century life and thought. A boldly ambitious work of scholarship, this book challenges us to rethink the legacy of Burke and the turbulent era in which he played so pivotal a role.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Big History is a new field on a grand scale: it tells the story of the universe over time through a diverse range of disciplines that spans cosmology, physics, chemistry, astronomy, geology, evolutionary biology, anthropology, and archaeology, thereby reconciling traditional human history with environmental geography and natural history. Weaving the myriad threads of evidence-based human knowledge into a master narrative that stretches from the beginning of the universe to the present, the Big History framework helps students make sense of their studies in all disciplines by illuminating the structures that underlie the universe and the connections among them. Teaching Big History is a powerful analytic and pedagogical resource, and serves as a comprehensive guide for teaching Big History, as well for sharing ideas about the subject and planning a curriculum around it. Readers are also given helpful advice about the administrative and organizational challenges of instituting a general education program constructed around Big History. The book includes teaching materials, examples, and detailed sample exercises. This book is also an engaging first-hand account of how a group of professors built an entire Big History general education curriculum for first-year students, demonstrating how this thoughtful integration of disciplines exemplifies liberal education at its best and illustrating how teaching and learning this incredible story can be transformative for professors and students alike.

Book Presidential Power

Download or read book Presidential Power written by John P. Burke and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-04 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presidential power is perhaps one of the most central issues in the study of the American presidency. Since Richard E. Neustadt's classic study, first published in 1960, there has not been a book that thoroughly examines the issue of presidential power. Presidential Power: Theories and Dilemmas by noted scholar John P. Burke provides an updated and comprehensive look at the issues, constraints, and exercise of presidential power. This book considers the enduring question of how presidents can effectively exercise power within our system of shared powers by examining major tools and theories of presidential power, including Neustadt's theory of persuasion and bargaining as power, constitutional and inherent powers, Samuel Kernell's theory of going public, models of historical time, and the notion of internal time. Using illustrative examples from historical and contemporary presidencies, Burke helps students and scholars better understand how presidents can manage the public's expectations, navigate presidential-congressional relations, and exercise influence in order to achieve their policy goals.

Book Remember When

Download or read book Remember When written by Richard E. Burke and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-05-11 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a love story about Richard and Cherie and how their love stood the test of time when his naval duty took him away to the Mediterranean and the Persian Gulf for seven months in 1962. It is a story of Petty Officer Richard Burke and his life aboard an American destroyer as he sailed seas from the Atlantic Ocean to the Persian Gulf and the many countries and foreign ports they visited. It is a story about the Fred T. Berry (DD-858) and its involvement in the Mercury Program and its part in the recovery of the space capsules that paved the way for the early space flights that would eventually take our astronauts to the moon. It is a story of the fears and uncertainty of the men that served aboard the destroyer Fred T. Berry on patrol during those thirteen days in October 1962 when President Kennedy blockaded Cuba during the missile crisis. It is the story of their search for the Thresher, the loss of our first nuclear submarine off the coast of New England. In 1972, the Fred T. Berry DD/DDE was sunk off the coast of Key West Florida to build up the reef. In June of 1972, a twenty-one-foot minisub dove on the wreck of the Fred T. Berry and got hung up on her, and although there was a rescue attempt by divers in heated diving suits, all men aboard the minisub perished when they ran out of air.
