Book North Carolina Civil War Obituaries Regiments 1 through 46

Download or read book North Carolina Civil War Obituaries Regiments 1 through 46 written by E.B. Munson and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-09-15 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: North Carolina sent more than 125,000 men and boys to fight the Civil War. It is estimated that about 40,000 lost their lives on the battlefield or by disease. Most were sent home for burial in family plots or community churchyards but thousands could not be identified or could not be transported and were interred in unmarked graves across the country. Many never had an obituary published. Others had obituaries that included directions to the deceased's final resting place. This compilation of obituaries from North Carolina newspapers documents the date and cause of death for hundreds of soldiers, with many providing place of burial, surviving relatives, last words, accounts by comrades and details of military service.

Download or read book North Carolina Civil War Obituaries Regiments 47 70 Volume 2 A Collection of Tributes to the War Dead and Veterans written by Barry Munson and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-10-25 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: North Carolina sent over 125,000 men and boys to service in the Civil War. It is estimated that about 40,000 lost their lives through disease, accidents, or on the battlefield during the four war years. Previous to the war, death was a more private affair, with family and friends there to comfort the dying and bid him or her farewell. Burials took place in the community in a churchyard or in a selected place where generations of a family lay. But with the war, what would happen to the bodies of their loved ones-fathers, husbands, sons, brothers, and other relatives so far away from home? This book, a compilation of obituaries written in NC newspapers, seeks to answer that question-what happened to a loved one? There are approximately 1200 names in this collection.

Book excerpt: The life story of a man who rose from humble beginnings on an eastern Montana homestead to become one of the most skilled and respected pilots of the day. Jack Burke grew up working for a dollar a day on the family ranch, drove his own car at 13, learned to fly at 14 and was well on his way to "a life aloft" by 16. After "flying the bush" in Alaska--when Pan Am still relied on dogsled drivers as in-flight guides--Jack transferred to New York to pilot the mammoth flying boats across the North Atlantic to Europe during the dark days of World War Two. He went on to become a respected check pilot and instructor, took the controls of nearly every new plane to "fly the line," served in three wars and logged over 40,000 hours of flight time. Despite his lofty credentials, Mr. Burke remains refreshingly humble and down-to-earth. His "best day ever" with Pan Am, he vividly recalls, was January 31st, 1968, the first day of the bloody Tet Offensive, when he dropped 5,000 feet from the sky over besieged Saigon Airport in his 707 to rescue more than 200 trapped civilians. Now you can ride along with Jack through these and many more of his adventures, sharing first-hand all the thrills, chills and, occasionally, near-spills from this unique and remarkable "life aloft."

Book Railroad Builders The Dunavant Family of Virginia North Carolina and Tennessee

Download or read book Railroad Builders The Dunavant Family of Virginia North Carolina and Tennessee written by Christopher Hunt Robertson, M.Ed. and published by Christopher Hunt Robertson, M.Ed.. This book was released on 2015-01-01 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By 1856, the Dunavants had begun building railroads and they would eventually be among the South's prominent railroad contractors. As they migrated from Virginia to North Carolina and Tennessee, they added to those regions new railroads, mills, hotels, golf clubs, dams and tunnels. For 73 years, from 1856 to 1929, their large-scale construction projects contributed substantially to the development of Southside Virginia, Western North Carolina (Morganton, Charlotte, Statesville, Asheville and Blowing Rock), Tennessee (Memphis), and other southern states. The naming of Dunavant Street in Charlotte paid homage to former resident and builder, Henry Jackson Dunavant. In downtown Morganton, Samuel David Dunavant organized Burke County’s first mill (the Dunavant Cotton Mnfg. Co., later known as the Alpine Cotton Mill); its building has been added to the National Historic Register. (2015 Recipient of a History Book Award and a Family History Book Award from the North Carolina Society of Historians)

Book Robert De Niro at Work

Download or read book Robert De Niro at Work written by Adam Ganz and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-11-09 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert De Niro at Work is the first critical study to examine how Robert de Niro, perhaps the finest screen actor of his generation, works with screenplays to imagine, prepare and denote his performance. In categorising the various ways in which De Niro works with a screenplay, this book will re-examine the relationship between actor and text. This book considers the screenplay as above all a working document and a material object, present at every stage of the filmmaking process. The working screenplay goes through various iterations in development and exists in many versions on set, each adapted and personalised for the specific use of the individual and their role. As the archive reveals, nobody works more closely with the script than the actor, and no actor works more on a script than De Niro.
