Book Scaling Dimensions of Craters Produced by Buried Explosions

Download or read book Scaling Dimensions of Craters Produced by Buried Explosions written by Albert J. Chabai and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question of the proper scaling of crater dimensions resulting from buried explosions is investigated. Dimensional analyses are performed from which four different scaling rules are derived. Data are reviewed in an attempt to distinguish which scaling rules are fundamental to cratering. Inability to perform cratering experiments with similitude apparently is one reason for lack of an unambiguous answer to the scaling question. Influences of possible sources of similarity violation are qualitatively examined, and some experiments are suggested which may provide more direct information about the correct scaling of crater dimensions.

Book The Burial Record of Prehistoric Liangshan in Southwest China

Download or read book The Burial Record of Prehistoric Liangshan in Southwest China written by Anke Hein and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-13 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book proposes a new model and scheme of analysis for complex burial material and applies it to the prehistoric archaeological record of the Liangshan region in Southwest China that other archaeologists have commonly given a wide berth, regarding it as too patchy, too inhomogeneous, and overall too unwieldy to work with. The model treats burials as composite objects, considering the various elements separately in their respective life histories. The application of this approach to the rich and diverse archaeological record of the Liangshan region serves as a test of this new form of analysis. This volume thus pursues two main aims: to advance the understanding of the archaeology of the immediate study area which has been little examined, and to present and test a new scheme of analysis that can be applied to other bodies of material.

Book Ban Chiang Northeast Thailand Volume 2D

Download or read book Ban Chiang Northeast Thailand Volume 2D written by Joyce C. White and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2022-01-25 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholars of ancient metallurgy gain insights from individual artifacts as well as from synthetic overviews because debates can turn on details of particular objects from particular contexts. Therefore, it is important for archaeometallurgical studies to provide comprehensive catalogs that specify the attributes of individual objects as well as contexts and the technical studies undertaken on those objects. This fourth volume in the series is devoted to presenting the metallurgical evidence from Ban Chiang, Ban Tong, Ban Phak Top, and Don Klang in northeast Thailand in the form of detailed catalogs organized by sites, periods, and artifact types. All metal artifacts, metallic by-products, and crucibles from the four-site study are included. A catalog of analyzed prills is also included. The catalogs summarize all the contextual, metric, and analytical data from metallographic, elemental, and microhardness analyses. Illustrations and photomicrographs provide visual evidence for the study collection. These kinds of detailed catalogs form the raw material of technical and archaeological interpretation, enabling comparisons with other collections as well as allowing scholars to form their own conclusions independently of the interpretations of the authors.

Book Early Cycladic Sculpture in Context

Download or read book Early Cycladic Sculpture in Context written by Marisa Marthari and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2017-01-04 with total page 949 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sculpture of the early bronze age Cyclades has been systematically studied since the time of Christos Tsountas at the end of the 19th century. But that study has been hampered by the circumstance that so many of the subsequent finds come from unauthorized excavations, where the archaeological context was irretrievably lost. Largely for that reason there are still many problems surrounding the chronology, the function and the meaning of Early Cycladic sculpture. This lavishly illustrated and comprehensive reassessment sets out to rectify that situation by publishing finds which have been recovered in controlled excavations in recent years, as well as earlier finds for which better documentation can now be provided. Using the material from recent excavation projects, and drawing on the papers presented at a symposium held in Athens in 2014, it is possible now to undertake a fresh overview of the entire body of sculpture from the Cycladic islands which has been found in secure archaeological contexts. Beginning with early examples from Neolithic settlement sites and extending into a consideration of material found in later contexts, the 35 chapters are divided into sections which examine sculpture from settlements, cemeteries and the sanctuary at Kavos, concluding with a discussion of material, techniques and aspects of manufacture.

Book The Saint Etienne Compound Hypogea Jerusalem

Download or read book The Saint Etienne Compound Hypogea Jerusalem written by Riccardo Lufrani and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2019-01-21 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1885, a large hypogeum was discovered at the Saint-Étienne Compound, the domain acquired only two and a half years before by the Dominicans on the western slope of El Heidhemiyeh hill, about 250 m north of the Jerusalem Ottoman wall. After the unearthing of a second large hypogeum, only fifty metres north of Hypogeum 1, in their monumental work on the history of Jerusalem, the two eminent Dominican scholars Louis-Hugues Vincent and Felix-Marie Abel proposed to date the two burial complexes to the Hellenistic or Roman period. This dating remained unchallenged until the survey of 1974–75, carried out by the distinguished Israeli archaeologists Gabriel Barkay and Amos Kloner, who proposed to date the two burial caves towards the end of the Judahite kingdom, on the basis of an unsystematic comparison of few architectural features with those of other tombs. In the frame of the improved knowledge of the broad and adjacent archaeological contexts since the last study of the Saint-Étienne Compound Hypogea, between 2011 and 2014 Riccardo Lufrani carried out a detailed survey of the two burial caves, providing new and more detailed photographic, topographic, archaeological and geological documentation. The systematic comparison of the significant architectural features of the Saint-Étienne Compound Hypogea with a consistent sample of 22 tombs in the region suggest dating the hewing of the two hypogea to the Early Hellenistic period, shedding a new light on the history of Jerusalem.

  • Author : Susan Pfeiffer
  • Publisher : Dundurn
  • Release : 1991-01-30
  • ISBN : 1459715802
  • Pages : 329 pages

Download or read book Snake Hill written by Susan Pfeiffer and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 1991-01-30 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1987, skeletal remains were encountered during excavation just west of Old Fort Erie, in Ontario’s Niagara Peninsula. While possession of the land had been bitterly contested in 1814, it remained virtually undeveloped and only in the 1980s, with the construction of permanent homes, did excavations yield evidence of the distant past. An international team of scholars and scientists investigated the remains and identified the individuals’ nationalities for repatriation, where appropriate. The resulting archaeological dig has proven crucial to our understanding of the siege of Fort Erie, and provided new information about military clothing, personal gear, medical science, and other details of the day-to-day life of a soldier living under battlefield conditions during the War of 1812. Snake Hill provides a detailed account of this investigation, documenting an important story of suffering and carnage, and providing the reader with a rare glimpse at life and death during the War of 1812. This book contributes significantly to our understanding of events before, during and after Fort Erie’s 1814 siege.
