Book excerpt: Each day students throughout the world are exposed to bullying in many different ways and on many different occasions. Bullying has received such a great amount of attention through the media, that it leaves parents and community members with the belief that bullying has become a bigger problem today than it ever has before (Austin, Reynolds, & Barnes, 2012; Carrera, DePalma, & Lameiras, 2011; Packman, Lepkowski, Overton, & Smaby, 2005; Rigby & Smith, 2011). Nearly every state in the nation has passed laws regarding bullying and increasing the responsibility of schools and districts to implement programs to prevent and/or address bullying on their campuses (U.S. Department of Education, 2011). Many schools and districts have not only developed policies to place them in compliance with the passed legislation, but they have begun to implement programs, such as School-Wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (SWPBIS), as a method to help improve the overall school environment (Pugh & Chitiyo, 2012; Reinke, Herman, & Stormont, 2012; Simonsen & Sugai, 2013). While it has shown to help improve the overall school climate, researchers suggest that this may also be utilized to reduce the presence of bullying in schools (Good, McIntosh, & Gietz, 2011; Packman et al., 2005; Pugh & Chitiyo, 2012). This study examined the perceptions of middle school teachers concerning the use of SWPBIS in their schools, along with their perceptions of its effectiveness at reducing the presence of negative student behaviors, such as bullying. Research was conducted using quantitative data to determine teacher perceptions of the questions being presented in this study. While the outcomes to nearly all of the research questions reported very little significance, these results showed that teachers' perceived that SWPBIS is effective at reducing the presence of negative student behaviors within the school when it has been implemented with fidelity. --Page ii.

Book excerpt: A qualitative, case study was designed to determine the effectiveness of one public middle school's bullying prevention program, which was based on the Olweus model. The strength of the study was its descriptive quality. It encapsulated teacher perceptions of numerous areas of the bullying prevention program. The literature review revealed the characteristics of an effective bullying prevention program. The data analyses for this study were built around the 38 responses of the bullying prevention program survey, which assessed teacher perceptions of the initial training and implementation of the program in its third year. Ten participants were interviewed to gather more information. Teachers reported the middle school's bullying prevention program to be effective. Participants desired follow-through instruction on the facilitation of class meetings along with involvement of all stakeholders. Understandings derived from this research provided a more global view of the school's bullying prevention program. This, in turn, may be used to drive change, which should lead to a more positive and healthy school climate for all students so that learning may take place.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to identify student and teacher perceptions of the effectiveness of the Olweus Bullying Prevention program. The study included 90 students and 18 teachers and was conducted in three elementary schools in the same school district in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States. Teachers and students responded to Likert scale survey questions, open-ended questions, and provided input during interviews. Students reported that the program provided them with strategies, as victims and bystanders, to identify the types of bullying. With the strategies presented from the Olweus Bullying Prevention program, victim and bystander self-advocating and reporting skills improved. Qualitative data showed that physical bullying occurred less frequently than verbal and relational bullying. Teachers felt that classroom meetings helped reduce the frequency of bullying. Teachers also stated that sufficient materials were provided to support program implementation; however, sustainable professional development was still needed. This research could provide districts with supportive information when considering implementation of the Olweus Bullying Prevention program.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this multiple-case study was to understand teacher perceptions of bullying and the effectiveness of the current anti-bullying policy of a suburban district in the southwestern U.S. Teacher perceptions will be generally defined as what teachers personally believe about bullying and how they perceive the effectiveness of the district's anti-bullying policy. Data was collected from three sources, interviews, teacher journals, and observations. Cross case synthesis was used to treat each case separately and then combine identified themes across cases. Data showed that teachers perceive the policy to be somewhat effective. However, significant gaps exist that need to be addressed, namely a lack of understanding of the district's definition of bullying which leads to a lack of proper identification of bullying, a lack of understanding of the policy itself, leading to a lack of implementation, and a lack of administrator support.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to explore the effectiveness of the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program (OBPP) and to provide an annotated bibliography of professional literature related to bullying for professional educators. The OBPP used a whole school approach and taught common vocabulary to define the word bullying. Bullying rose to front-page news in recent years and the events led to injuries, death, and even suicide. Long-term effects were severe and included self-esteem issues. The OBPP was one of the better-known programs; however, there were contradictory reports on its effectiveness. This mixed methods study gauged teacher and principal perceptions of the effectiveness of the OBPP. Principals and teachers were surveyed and follow-up interviews were conducted with the principals to better explain the survey results. This study affirmed that the OBPP was effective as measured by these teachers and principals. Based on this sample, results indicated that the OBPP was an effective tool to reduce bullying in the elementary school populations involved in this study. A recommendation stemming from the completion of this study was that the manner in which data on bullying is collected be streamlined. Further research may delve into the possibilities of consistent data collection nationwide to properly assess the bullying phenomena and navigate appropriate programs as solutions.

There is an implication that individuals who are bullied must have "asked for" this type of treatment, or deserved it. Sometimes, even the child who is bullied begins to internalize this idea. For many years, there has been a general acceptance and collective shrug when it comes to a child or adolescent with greater social capital or power pushing around a child perceived as subordinate. But bullying is not developmentally appropriate; it should not be considered a normal part of the typical social grouping that occurs throughout a child's life. Although bullying behavior endures through generations, the milieu is changing. Historically, bulling has occurred at school, the physical setting in which most of childhood is centered and the primary source for peer group formation. In recent years, however, the physical setting is not the only place bullying is occurring. Technology allows for an entirely new type of digital electronic aggression, cyberbullying, which takes place through chat rooms, instant messaging, social media, and other forms of digital electronic communication. Composition of peer groups, shifting demographics, changing societal norms, and modern technology are contextual factors that must be considered to understand and effectively react to bullying in the United States. Youth are embedded in multiple contexts and each of these contexts interacts with individual characteristics of youth in ways that either exacerbate or attenuate the association between these individual characteristics and bullying perpetration or victimization. Recognizing that bullying behavior is a major public health problem that demands the concerted and coordinated time and attention of parents, educators and school administrators, health care providers, policy makers, families, and others concerned with the care of children, this report evaluates the state of the science on biological and psychosocial consequences of peer victimization and the risk and protective factors that either increase or decrease peer victimization behavior and consequences.

Book excerpt: This qualitative study with a quantitative component of collected data examined teachers' perceptions of class meetings and its impact on bullying within a school setting. A middle school in south-central Pennsylvania was the setting that this study took place. Participants in this study included thirty-six teachers from a middle school which was comprised of seventh and eighth grade. Qualitative data collection provided information about teachers' perceptions of the effect of bullying within the school setting, the effect of class meetings on bullying in the school setting, and the disciplinary factors regarding bullying that have been affected because of class meetings. Qualitative data was gathered from thirty-six teachers who completed the Teacher Survey, a 30-item Likert-type scale instrument. Six of the thirty-six teachers participated in a subsequent interview. The researcher also gathered school observation data using an observation guide to organize data collection. Archival discipline data was used to enhance qualitative data collection. A comparison of archival discipline incidents pertaining to bullying collected during the school year before class meetings were implemented was compared with the same type of disciplinary data collected during the eighth year of class meeting implementation. Findings of the study showed that the majority of teachers perceived that bullying affects the school environment. Teachers' perceptions indicated that the class meeting process has a favorable impact on building relationships between the teacher and students. The class benefit of building relationships among students was also revealed in this study. The positive relationship between staff and students and between students, enhanced bullying prevention, student connectedness, and positive school environment.

Book excerpt: Recently, widely publicized incidents of school violence have prompted questions about the abilities of school leaders to educate students in safe and socially productive environments. In many cases, incidents of school violence are linked directly to bullying episodes. The primary objective of this study is to examine the relationship between teacher perceptions of two dimensions of school bullying, student bullying and teacher protection, and collective efficacy in light of school size and socioeconomic status. The general hypothesis of this study is that collective efficacy is negatively related to school bullying and positively related to teacher protection. The sample was comprised of data collected from individual teachers from 108 elementary schools in south central Texas aggregated at the school level. Descriptive statistics were computed and summarized for all variables. The study utilized The Bully Scare (Smith & Hoy, 2004) to measure perceptions of student bullying and teacher protection and the Collective Efficacy Scale (Goddard, 2002) to gauge the collective efficacy of teachers. A factor analysis was performed on both research instruments. Correlation coefficients were computed for each aspect of school bullying and collective efficacy. The general hypothesis that collective efficacy is negatively related to school bullying and positively related to teacher protection was supported. Subsequently, multiple regression analyses provided a more defined picture of the aspects of school bullying, collective efficacy, SES, and school size. Collective efficacy, school size, and socioeconomic status formed a linear combination that explained a significant portion of variance in student bullying and teacher protection.
