Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The North American bull snake is a harmless snake species. Pituophis catenifer is the scientific name for bull snakes, which are colubrid snakes. Bull snakes are easily mistaken for rattlesnakes due to their similar appearance; however, rattlesnakes have venomous fangs while bullsnakes do not. - Bullsnakes are extremely large snakes that can grow to a whopping 8 feet (2.4 meters) in length! Their characteristic dark blotches or bands on a lighter background may take on different hues and styles depending on their geographic range. Grasslands, prairies, deserts, and open woodlands are common habitats for these animals because of their skill as burrowers and the fact that they eat small mammals, birds, and even reptiles. They have a powerful constricting ability that they employ to kill their prey by immobilizing it. - Bullsnakes are beneficial because they help reduce rodent populations and pose no threat to humans. They are not aggressive and prefer to avoid confrontations with humans, despite their tendency to hiss loudly and swell up when threatened. Bullsnakes are popular among reptile enthusiasts and are sometimes kept as pets because of their unique appearance and usefulness in reducing pest populations.

Book The Natural History of the Snakes and Lizards of Iowa

Download or read book The Natural History of the Snakes and Lizards of Iowa written by Terry VanDeWalle and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 2022-08-10 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an in-depth look at the natural history of each snake and lizard species/subspecies found in Iowa. Each of the thirty-three species accounts includes a sampling of the common names the species has been known by in the past, the first specimens collected in the state, and a brief history of the early Iowa literature related to the species, along with a complete description and a discussion of similar species, distribution in the state, habitat, behavior, threats, foods and feeding, and reproduction. While readers will be able to identify Iowa’s snakes and lizards through its species accounts, identification keys, and beautiful photographs and illustrations, this book is intended to be more than a field guide. What makes it truly unique is the comparison of historic data collected by Iowa herpetologists in the 1930s and 1940s with data collected by the author, along with James L. Christiansen and others, since 1960. Custom maps show the reader how species’ distributions have changed over time.

Book excerpt: In frigid Montana, a boy tracks a killer wolf and learns to be a man It is the worst winter anyone in Montana can remember. If the cold doesn’t let up soon, the Brue family farm may be done for good—and the Brues along with it. Young Nashua Brue is shivering over his breakfast one morning when his father announces that Nash will be taking the week off school. A great wolf has been savaging the local cattle, and the cattlemen’s association has offered a $500 reward for the beast’s head. Nash and his father will risk death to get that prize, for their lives depend on it. Father and son saddle up and ride into the frozen countryside with an eccentric gang of hunters. But as they track the majestic animal, Nash begins to doubt their mission. Who is the real villain of the prairie—the men compelled by greed to kill, or the wolf that, like Nash’s family, simply does whatever it takes to survive?

Book Saving Snakes

    Book Details:
  • Author : Nicolette L. Cagle
  • Publisher : University of Virginia Press
  • Release : 2023-01-17
  • ISBN : 0813948835
  • Pages : 235 pages

Download or read book Saving Snakes written by Nicolette L. Cagle and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2023-01-17 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beautiful to behold and extremely sensitive to its environment, the snake is nonetheless stigmatized as a serpent, a creature that almost universally inspires fear. At a time when so many animals are endangered, who will speak up for the snake? Snake populations are declining precipitously around the globe, but calls for their conservation are muted by fear and prejudice. Saving Snakes offers a new approach to understanding snakes and preserving their populations—an approach built on respect. Nicolette Cagle has traveled the world in search of snakes, from the Midwest and the southeastern United States to Cuba, Nicaragua, and Australia, and spent decades conducting natural science research on the patterns of snakes in regions where urban development encroaches upon the natural world. Her book offers a firsthand account of the strange and secretive lives of snakes, and reveals their devastating losses. Beautifully and accessibly written, Saving Snakes entwines Cagle’s personal narrative with deep scientific and historical research. Through the author’s exploration of her evolution as a field naturalist, it provides a blueprint for developing a conservation consciousness among young people and paves the way for increased inclusivity in the male-dominated field of herpetology. While fundamentally a book about snakes, this is also the story of one woman's pursuit of her passion as she searches for, studies, and advocates for these enigmatic creatures.

Book The Flying Flea Callie and Me

Download or read book The Flying Flea Callie and Me written by Bill Wallace and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who ever heard of a cat that didn't eat birds? The house people had picked me out of my litter to be a mouser. Callie was getting too old for the job. So it was mine. But I didn't plan on getting dive-bombed by a mockingbird building her nest...or adopting the baby who fell out. No joke! I'm a cat, but I do not eat birds. Mice, yes. Birds, no. Flea -- that's what I named her -- couldn't even fly. She was so scared when she toppled onto my head that she said, "Eat me...it's quicker than starving to death." She was pathetic. I had to help her. The first step was protecting Flea -- and me -- from the monster rats in the barn (that's saying a mouthful!) and Bullsnake under the woodpile. Next, Callie and I had to teach Flea to fly. After all, how could she stay up North with us when her bird family was flying to Florida. I'm not a Florida kind of cat. It's just too hot for us furry types. I know I'll miss my Flea. But she'll come back -- after she's seen the world!
