Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1279-80 hundred rolls are one of the most important sources for later thirteenth century England, yet this is the first comprehensive study of the inquiry which brought them into being. A Second Domesday will be an indispensable working tool for historians and is based on the latest knowledge of the returns. More of these are being discovered all the time and one of the aims of this book is to stimulate the recognition of other surviving texts. The book places theinquiry in its historical context, continental as well as English. This is followed by an examination of its purpose and whether or not it was conceived deliberately as a second Domesday Book. Central to the study is a consideration of the geographical range of the inquiry, how it was conducted and the way inwhich the returns were compiled. The way in which the inquiry was used, by historians as well as contemporaries, along with the introductory chapters will be particularly helpful to students. The book concludes with a description of all known returns, which, together with the appendices, are designed to assist future users.

Book Liberties and Communities in Medieval England

Download or read book Liberties and Communities in Medieval England written by Helen M. Cam and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-12-04 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1944, this book contains sixteen essays on the history of Cambridge, Oxford and other English communities in the medieval period, particularly the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Cam argues in her introduction that 'medieval local government can only be understood through much short range study of particular places and institutions', and uses the rich history of these areas as a microcosm of wider historical change and development. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in English medieval history and the role of small communities in implementing and creating change.

Book The County Courts of Medieval England 1150 1350

Download or read book The County Courts of Medieval England 1150 1350 written by Robert C. Palmer and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2019-02-19 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first monograph on English medieval county courts, this book provides a major revision of traditional conceptions of the character of these courts and the organization of English society from the twelfth to the fourteenth century. THe county courts have been considered courts of custom dominated by local knights unskilled in the law. By analyzing county peronnel and their role of the courts, Robert C. Palmer shows that these courts were, on the contrary, clearly professional and controlled by the magnates through their lawyers. Nevertheless, as the author demonstrates by his study of the process of jurisdictional change, the county courts were increasingly relegated to lesser roles by changes meant to assure justice to county litigants, while the king's court became the normal court of original jurisdiction for most important cases. Professor Palmer appraoches his subject through the study of original records of litigation. Some of his primary sources were unkown until now (the county court year book reports and the writ file records) and some (the king's court plea rolls of Edward I, the unedited Cheshire plea rolls, and the early close rolls) had not previously been so closely examined for evidence on the county courts. In this ambitious work the author has shown how the king's courts and the county and local courts were linekd by personnel and procedure and how legal innovations and other circumstances broke down these links. What emerges is an enlightening study of legal and constitutional change. Robert C. Palmer is a Junior Fellow of the Michigan Society of Fellows at the University of Michigan Law School.
