Die chemische Zusammensetzung des Gesteins wird durch die analytischen Bestimmungen, naher charakteresiert, welche mein verehrter College Professor O. Widman die Freundlichkeit hatte auszufuhren. Prof. Widman hat folgende Resume uber seine Untersuchungen zu meiner Verfugung gestellt. Da verschiedene Theile des Gesteins grosse Verschiedenheiten in der Zusammensetzung zeigen, und da ausserdem wegen des grossen Gehaltes an metallischem Eisen die Herstellung eines geeigneten Analysematerials ohne Opferung des grossten Theils des Gesteins nicht gelingen durfte, habe ich auf eine vollstandige quantitative Analyse verzichtet und ausser der qualitativen Prufungen nur einige Prozentbestimmungen ausgefuhrt. Der nach Behandlung mit Salzsaure unlosliche Ruckstand (Zinnerz, Quarz, Topas u. s. w. siehe oben) betrug in einer Probe 2,07 /o, in einer zweiten Probe 2,33 /o-Der bei Auflosung des Eisens entwickelte Wasserstoff enthalt viel Arsen-und etwas Schwefel-Wasserstoff Um eine Vorstellung von dem Minimigehalt an Eisen zu bekommen, wurde der Wasserstoff nach der von Victor Meyer fur andere Zwecke benutzte Luftverdrangungsmetode bestimmt. Daraus lies sich der Eisengehalt zu 32,5 /o berechnen, eine Ziffer die jedoch, wegen der Anwesenheit von reduktiblen Ferriverbindungen, nicht den ganzen Prozent an metallischem Eisen representiert. Diesen habe ich durch vierzigstundigem Kochen eines Probes mit Quecksilberchlorid erhalten. Das so geloste Eisen wurde nach dem Ausfallen des Quecksilbers zu 47,4 /o bestimmt, wobei ich mich uberzeugte, dass in dem Ruckstande nach dem Auskochen mit Quecksilberchlorid kein metallisches Eisen weiter...

Der Ast, durch welchen dieser Schnitt geht, ist nicht besonders proximal, sondern durfte mit z. B. hundert anderen Asten gleichwertig sein, denn die Art muss, gleichviel ob sie platt oder dutenformig ist, auf alle Falle sehr gross gewesen sein. Fig. 2 ist ein Querschnitt von dem unteren der beiden Aste, in welche sich Fig. 1 geteilt hat. Die drei unteren Knospungen auf Fig. 1 haben sich jetzt umgestaltet, und wir begnugen' uns damit, die Individuen 1, 2 und 3 zu identificieren. Von diesen ist auch das unpaarige 2 auf Fig. 1 vorhanden, obschon es dort zu klein ist, um bezeichnet werden zu konnen. Die Thecen sind namlich immer anfangs kleiner als die paarigen Individuen, obschon sie diese spater an Grosse ubertreffen, so dass die Thecen stets die grosseren Individuen sind. Diese beiden Querschnitte gleichen ja vollstandig den Querschnitten der zusammengesetzten Aste von Dictyonemar tuberosum an Stellen, wo keine Anschwellungen und keine Thecamundungen vorkommen. Wie bei Ptilograptus suecicus liegen auch hier die Knospungsindividuen an der hinteren oder ausseren Seite der Aste, obgleich dieses Verhaltnis in zusammengesetzten Asten weniger deutlich ist. Wenn aber die Aste einfach sind, ist die Ahnlichkeit mit Querschnitten von Ptilograptus suecicus eine vollstandige, wie z. B. am Schnitte 24. Wenn wirklich die Knospung und ihr Verhaltnis zu den Zweigen bei dieser Art ebenso gesetzmassig sind wie bei jener, wird dieses wenigstens durch die sich stets wiederholenden...
