Book Automated Laboratory Testing Methods for Specific Gravity and Absorption Verified to Match the Current Method Results

Download or read book Automated Laboratory Testing Methods for Specific Gravity and Absorption Verified to Match the Current Method Results written by Arudi Rajagopal and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty six coarse aggregate (12 gravel, 10 lime stone, 4 slag) and nine fine aggregate (4 lime stone, 3 natural sand, 2 slag sand) materials were collected from various sources in Ohio. Specific gravity and water absorption of the coarse aggregate samples were determined using CoreLok and ASTM C 127 procedures while testing of fine aggregate samples involved CoreLok, SSDetect and ASTM C 128 procedures. All the tests were performed in a single laboratory and by the same technician. The primary intent of the study was to investigate the ability of CoreLok and SSDetect to obtain faster results while, at the same time, improving the accuracy of results. The results led to the following conclusions: Coarse Aggregates: CoreLok bulk specific gravity (Gsb) values are up to 8% higher than the ASTM C 127 Gsb values. The difference between the corresponding apparent specific gravity (Gsa) values vary from 0 to 12%. The CoreLok absorption values are 1 to 81% lower except for two slag samples. These differences are statistically significant at 95% confidence interval. Fine Aggregates: The SSDetect Gsb results closely follow the ASTM C 128 values. CoreLok Gsb values are moderately higher than ASTM and SSDetect for natural sand, but lower for slag. Gsa results of all the three test procedures follow each other closely. These differences are not statistically significant. The difference in absorption values between CoreLok and ASTM C 128 procedure ranges from 1.5% to 243.7%. In case of SSDetect vs. ASTM, this difference is 0.9% to 124.2%. An in-depth absorption study of coarse aggregates using CoreLok highlighted some inconsistencies in the procedure. The principal recommendation of the study for the Ohio Department of Transportation is to continue specific gravity and absorption tests of coarse and fine aggregates using the traditional ASTM procedures.

Book Investigation of Electromagnetic Gauges for Determining In place HMA Density

Download or read book Investigation of Electromagnetic Gauges for Determining In place HMA Density written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Density is an important component of hot-mix asphalt (HMA) pavement quality and long-term performance. Insufficient density of an in-place HMA pavement is the most frequently cited construction-related performance problem. This study evaluated the use of electromagnetic gauges to nondestructively determine densities. Field and laboratory measurements were taken with two electromagnetic gauges-a PaveTracker and a Pavement Quality Indicator (PQ1). Test data were collected in the field during and after paving operations and also in laboratory on field mixes compacted in the lab. This study revealed that several mix-and project-specific factors affect electromagnetic gauge readings. Consequently, the implementation of these gauges will likely need to be done utilizing a test strip on a project- and mix-specific basis to appropriately identify an adjustment factor for the specific electromagnetic gauge being used for quality control and quality assurance (QC/QA) testing. The substantial reduction in testing time that results from employing electromagnetic gauges rather than coring makes it possible for more readings to be used in the QC/QA process with real-time information without increasing the testing costs.

Book Comparing the Volumetric and Mechanical Properties of Laboratory and Field Specimens of Asphalt Concrete

Download or read book Comparing the Volumetric and Mechanical Properties of Laboratory and Field Specimens of Asphalt Concrete written by Louay Nadhim Mohammad and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reports document research that was performed to (1) determine causes of variability and tolerances for volumetric and mechanical properties of dense-graded asphalt mixtures measured within and among the three specimen types; and (2) propose a practice for state departments of transportation to incorporate these results in specifications and criteria for quality assurance, mix design verification or validation, and structural design and forensic studies. The research was conducted in two phases. In Phase I, datasets of laboratory and field test data were collected and pooled in a meta-analysis in an attempt to determine levels of variability in asphalt mixtures and the factors causing variability among and between the three specimen types. Despite the inclusion of 25 extensive datasets representing roughly 8,000 individual mixtures in the meta-analysis, the results of the analysis were inconclusive. Phase II was then undertaken--a program testing specimens from paving projects across the United States to quantify the effects of process-based factors on the variability of volumetric and mechanical properties of the specimen types. The key outcome of the research is a proposed practice for evaluating the cause and magnitude of variability within and among the three specimen types. In addition, tolerances of volumetric and conversion factors between the three specimen types of mechanical properties evaluated are proposed based on the average difference between specimen comparisons for the mixtures evaluated in Phase II. Agencies may use these proposed values to evaluate and adjust their current tolerances.
