Excerpt: The Round Church (Bulgarian: , Kragla tsarkva), also known as the Golden Church (, Zlatna tsarkva) or the Church of St John (," tsarkva Sveti Yoan"), is a large partially preserved early medieval Eastern Orthodox church. It lies in Preslav, the former capital of the First Bulgarian Empire, today a town in northeastern Bulgaria. The church dates to the early 10th century, the time of Tsar Simeon I's rule and was unearthed and first archaeologically examined in 1927-1928. Considered to be one of the most impressive examples of medieval Bulgarian architecture, the Round Church takes its name from the distinctive shape of one of its three sections, the cella (naos), which is a rotunda that serves as a place of liturgy. The church's design also includes a wide atrium and a rectangular entrance area, or narthex, marked by two circular turrets. Book Conversations on a Train

Download or read book Conversations on a Train written by Regina Ryan and published by Regina Ryan. This book was released on 2016-10-27 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conversations on a Train' is a light-hearted cross-cultural account of one Bulgarian's life between their country of birth and her adopted home in Australia. Set between 1993–2015, it is a collection of anecdotes, musings, and reminiscences on Bulgarian culture, childhood and homesickness. Regina Ryan (née Stefanova) illustrates how Bulgarians relate to the world and how she adjusted to life in Australia. From her teenage years in Sofia and Burgas through to adulthood in Perth, Regina discusses cultural differences and how she deals with these now as an adult who divides her time between two countries. 'Conversations on a Train' is also Regina's blatant attempt to Bulgarianise the reader.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Digging Politics explores uses of the ancient past in east-central Europe spanning the fascist, communist and post-communist period. Contributions range from East Germany to Poland to Romania to the Balkans. The volume addresses two central questions: Why then and why there. Without arguing for an east-central European exceptionalism, Digging Politics uncovers transnational phenomena across the region that have characterized political wrangling over ancient pasts. Contributions include the biographies of famous archaeologists during the Cold War, the wrought history of organizational politics of archaeology in Romania and the Balkans, politically charged Cold War exhibitions of the Thracians, the historical re-enactment of supposed ancient Central tribes in Hungary, and the virtual archaeology of Game of Thrones in Croatia. Digging Politics charts the extraordinary story of ancient pasts in modern east-central Europe.
