Book An Economic Assessment of Banana Genetic Improvement and Innovation in the Lake Victoria Region of Uganda and Tanzania

Download or read book An Economic Assessment of Banana Genetic Improvement and Innovation in the Lake Victoria Region of Uganda and Tanzania written by Melinda Smale and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2007 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report assesses the impact on smallholder farmers of technology options developed by Uganda's National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO) to improve the productivity of the East African highland banana, a major crop in Uganda and Tanzania. The contributors survey an array of options either currently practiced or under development, including improved soil fertility management practices, conventional banana improvement, and transgenic banana cultivars. Their survey produces a number of findings with important implications for banana production: a recently developed banana hybrid adopted in Tanzania reduced the vulnerability of Tanzanian households to yield losses from pests and disease; a strong network of social ties among farmers facilitates the spread of best soil fertility management practices through farmer-to-farmer exchange; and transgenic bananas currently being developed could have pro-poor impact. Drawing on simulations of the economic benefits of these and other technology options, the contributors conclude that the current strategy endorsed by NARO, of combining conventional and transgenic approaches to mitigate the biotic pressures that cause major economic losses, is essential for sustaining banana production systems. The report serves as a valuable baseline for researchers and others interested in measuring the effectiveness of crop improvement programs.

Book Food Insecurity and the Social Division of Labour in Tanzania 1919 85

Download or read book Food Insecurity and the Social Division of Labour in Tanzania 1919 85 written by D. Bryceson and published by Springer. This book was released on 1990-07-08 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most studies of famine and the African food crisis stress how the socio-economic context influences the occurrence of food shortages. By contrast, this book argues that food insecurity itself influences the social and economic organization of the society. Through this approach, the author provides a new interpretation of the causes and consequences of Tanzania's present economic crisis. The book examines the effects of changing food availability on the functioning of the state, the market and clientage networks, over the past seven decades. The conclusion is that clientage is no less important than the state and market as an organizational force in Tanzanian society, and, under heightened food insecurity, the state and market lose ground to clientage.

This book was released on 2003-06-16 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coffee beans grown in Brazil, Colombia, Vietnam, or one of the other hundred producing lands on five continents remain a palpable and long-standing manifestation of globalization. For five hundred years coffee has been grown in tropical countries for consumption in temperate regions. This 2003 volume brings together scholars from nine countries who study coffee markets and societies over the last five centuries in fourteen countries on four continents and across the Indian and Pacific Oceans, with a special emphasis on the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The chapters analyse the creation and function of commodity, labour, and financial markets; the role of race, ethnicity, gender, and class in the formation of coffee societies; the interaction between technology and ecology; and the impact of colonial powers, nationalist regimes, and the forces of the world economy in the forging of economic development and political democracy.

Book Government and Rural Development in East Africa

Download or read book Government and Rural Development in East Africa written by L. Cliffe and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The gestation period of this collection has been lengthy even by academic stan dards. Some of our long-suffering contributors prepared their original drafts for a workshop held in Nairobi in 1967, and although they have all up-dated their contributions they are still essentially reporting on research conducted in the late 1960s. However, we feel that their various findings and analyses of the issues they respectively treat have a continuing validity in our comprehension of the problem of rural development. Other contributions reporting on more recent work have been incorporated at different times since, most of them not commissioned especially for this symposium but all adding something to our understanding of the problem. The slow accumulation of material which makes up this fmal collection parallels an evolution in our own collective thinking, if indeed not that of most students of 'development' over the past decade. The progression has not been towards fmal clarification of the complex and changing East African realities, nor towards formulation of an accepted model for their analysis; rather, it has been marked by the questioning of the initial, somewhat simplistic assumptions with which some of us started out and a continuing debate and widening polar ization of views about the significance of that process of government 'pene tration' of the rural areas which is our focus, about the positive or negative value of 'development' policies in East Africa and, indeed, about the appropri ate theoretical approaches to the study of 'development' in general.

Book Connectedness in Evolution

Download or read book Connectedness in Evolution written by Kamanzi, Adalbertus and published by Africa Institute of South Africa. This book was released on 2014-10-21 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is predicated on a combative decolonial-Afrocentric ecophilosophy of science of nature and humanity. It is rigorous and comprehensive scholarly account of how nature has been colonised and turned into a natural resource available for the Cartesian subject in charge of the capitalist system to humanity's ad infinitum exploitation, with serious consequences for sustainable developmentalism. There is no doubt that this ground-breaking monograph will challenge scholars and irritate new critical thinking on developmentalism, which takes into account the threat of human activity on nature, the environment and ecology. It is a bold presentation of thoughts that will provoke other researches. Away from the tempting positionality of degenerating into nostalgic and romantic traditionalism versus fast-lane modernism, the author consistently problematises the complex issues through deployment of multidimensional thinking, the relationship between human beings and nature, and how technology, development (in the colonial sense) and colonial expansionism have objectified nature, sucked it dry of its content, and reduced it to the status of raw material for the production of man's success.
