Book Building Maintenance

Download or read book Building Maintenance written by Brian J.B. Wood and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-09-28 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maintaining a building is expensive: it costs many times more to run a building than to build it, yet maintenance is often accorded a low priority. Building Maintenance covers the technical aspects of maintenance for undergraduate students on built environment courses, particularly building surveying and facilities management. It addresses the major questions regarding maintenance activities and shows that maintenance should be considered seriously at the design stage. Extensive case studies illustrate what can go wrong, how to put matters right and how to get it right first time.

Book Maintenance Architecture

Download or read book Maintenance Architecture written by Hilary Sample and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2016-12-09 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An inventive examination of a crucial but neglected aspect of architecture, by an architect writing to architects. Maintenance plays a crucial role in the production and endurance of architecture, yet architects for the most part treat maintenance with indifference. The discipline of architecture values the image of the new over the lived-in, the photogenic empty and stark building over a messy and labored one. But the fact is: homes need to be cleaned and buildings and cities need to be maintained, and architecture no matter its form cannot escape from such realities. In Maintenance Architecture, Hilary Sample offers an inventive examination of the architectural significance of maintenance through a series of short texts and images about specific buildings, materials, and projects. Although architects have seldom choose to represent maintenance—imagining their work only from conception to realization—artists have long explored subjects of endurance and permanence in iconic architecture. Sample explores a range of art projects—by artists including Gordon Matta-Clark, Jeff Wall, and Mierle Laderman Ukeles—to recast the problem of maintenance for architecture. How might architectural design and discourse change as a building cycle expands to include “post-occupancy”? Sample looks particularly at the private home, exhibition pavilion, and high-rise urban building, giving special attention to buildings constructed with novel and developing materials, technologies, and precise detailing in relation to endurance. These include Buckminster Fuller's Dymaxion House (1929), the Lever House (1952), the U.S. Steel Building (1971), and the O-14 (2010). She considers the iconography of skyscrapers; maintenance workforces, both public and private; labor-saving technology and devices; and contemporary architectural projects and preservation techniques that encompass the afterlife of buildings. A selection of artworks make the usually invisible aspects of maintenance visible, from Martha Rosler's Cleaning the Drapes to Inigo Manglano-Ovalle's The Kiss.

Book Predicting Outcomes of Investments in Maintenance and Repair of Federal Facilities

Download or read book Predicting Outcomes of Investments in Maintenance and Repair of Federal Facilities written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-03-01 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The deteriorating condition of federal facilities poses economic, safety, operational, and environmental risks to the federal government, to the achievement of the missions of federal agencies, and to the achievement of public policy goals. Primary factors underlying this deterioration are the age of federal facilities-about half are at least 50 years old-and decades of inadequate investment for their maintenance and repair. These issues are not new and there are no quick fixes. However, the current operating environment provides both the impetus and the opportunity to place investments in federal facilities' maintenance and repair on a new, more sustainable course for the 21st Century. Despite the magnitude of investments, funding for the maintenance and repair of federal facilities has been inadequate for many years, and myriad projects have been deferred. Predicting Outcomes of Investments in Maintenance and Repair of Federal Facilities identifies processes and practices for transforming the current portfolio of federal facilities into one that is more economically, physically, and environmentally sustainable. This report addresses ways to predict or quantify the outcomes that can be expected from a given level of maintenance and repair investments in federal facilities or facilities' systems, and what strategies, measures, and data should be in place to determine the actual outcomes of facilities maintenance and repair investments.

Book Building Maintenance Management

Download or read book Building Maintenance Management written by Robin Lee and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 1991-01-15 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since publication of the first edition of this book some 10 years ago, there has been a growing awareness of the importance of building maintenance in the overall context of property management, and the need to obtain maximum value for the increasingly large sums spent on maintenance work. Maintenance management has been extensively researched but the main problem now lies in implementing the results. This book deals in a systematic and comprehensive way with the management of building maintenance and gives guidance on the related legislative and other constraints. This revised edition has been updated to reflect new thinking on the subject, to take account of changes in legislation, and to include new material on the use of computers and their application to maintenance decision making and information feedback. There is a completely new chapter on the causes of the more common building defects. Building Technology and Management said of an earlier edition, `An essential purchase for anyone engaged in the building industry and particularly those who seek to improve their professional approach to maintenance management'
