Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Building for the Children in the South By the American system of education, I mean not one kind of schools exclusively, but all good schooling that has been found valuable in our country. The American system of education means, first and foremost, the free common school for all children, supported by public taxation, administered by experts who are chosen by the people (in public education, as in government, the final court of appeal in this Republic); the free secondary, normal, technical, and higher education, held as a matter of undoubted public right, to be exercised in every State according to a high educational expediency, of which the people are the final judge, both elementary and superior public schools being kept as near the people in their local capacity as is consistent with efficient administration: even State supervision being confined to things that are general and essential, and national aid invited only at the most critical points, with the sole purpose to stimulate local effort, with no assumption of national supervision or control. Of course, public education, thus defined, has its general function in the elementary training of mind, discipline of character, and imparting of common information which every wise man knows are essential to the humblest citizen and the loftiest statesman alike. Of the six millions of American children and youth actually in daily attendance and the ten millions loosely enrolled in public and the three hundred thousand in private schools, nine-tenths will certainly turn their backs upon the school-house door as early as the age of fourteen. The first and ever-present concern in the American system is to do the best thing possible for these millions of children whose average school life to-day in the East does not exceed six, in the West five, or in the South three full school years. In the secondary, higher, industrial, and normal departments, which deal with the few hundred thousand youth in training for educational and social leadership, the common school has its right, which the people have unmistakably confirmed in every American State. But, in this upper region of education, the people invite the cooperation of every effective school. There is ample field for the display of individual genius, of corporate enterprise, of home and neighborhood training. And here the church, of every communion, has a field of operation so broad and exacting that it may well limit its efforts to what it can never half include and provoke no conflict with the people on that field where the people are bound to have their way, whoever goes to the wall: the maintenance, at public expense, of the free elementary school, open to every child, unsectarian in religion though profoundly moral and religious in the grain, unpartisan in politics, knowing no distinction of race or sex or social condition, the peoples university of American citizenship for every American child. More and more is it coming to be understood by all competent and patriotic thinkers that there is no necessary conflict of interests between these different methods of achieving the great result, since the most exclusive private or parochial school in our country must finally adjust itself to the conditions of our peculiar American life. Book excerpt: Research and practice shows that many vulnerable children and families face more than one challenge and require more than one intervention. However our service system has evolved historically to deal with one thing at a time or to provide services from multiple sources. This lack of integration can have a devastating effect on some families where key information or warning signs are missed. Coronial and judicial inquiries constantly stress the negative impact of a 'siloed' approach to service ...

Download or read book Necessary Spaces written by Saundra Murray Nettles and published by IAP. This book was released on 2013-08-01 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Necessary Spaces: Exploring the Richness of African American Childhood in the South, Saundra Murray Nettles takes the reader on a journey into neighborhood networks of learning at different times and places. Using autobiographical accounts, Nettles discusses the informal instructional practices of community “coaches” from the perspective of African American adults who look back on their childhood learning experiences in homes, libraries, city blocks, schools, churches, places of business, and nature. These eyewitness accounts reveal "necessary spaces,” the metaphor Nettles uses to describe seven recurring experiences that converge with contemporary notions of optimal black child development: connection, exploration, design, empowerment, resistance, renewal, and practice. Nettles weaves the personal stories with social scientific theory and research and practical accounts of community-based initiatives to illuminate how local communities contributed human, built, and natural resources to support children’s achievement in schools. The inquiry offers a timely and accessible perspective on how community involvement for children can be developed utilizing the grassroots efforts of parents, children, and other neighborhood residents; expertise from personnel in schools, informal institutions (such as libraries and museums); and other sectors interested in disparities in education, health, and the quality of physical settings. Grounded in the environmental memories of African American childhood, Necessary Spaces offers a culturally relevant view of civic participation and sustainable community development at the local level. Educational researchers and policy makers, pre-service and in-service teachers, and people who plan for and work with children and youth in neighborhoods will find this book an engaging look at possibilities for the social organization of educational resources. Qualitative researchers will find a model for writing personal scholarly essays that use the personal to inform larger issues of policy and practice. In Necessary Spaces, local citizens in neighborhoods across the United States will find stories that resonate with their own experiences, stimulate their recollections, and inform and inspire their continuing efforts to create brighter futures for children and communities.

Book Building Stronger Communities with Children and Families 2nd Edition

Download or read book Building Stronger Communities with Children and Families 2nd Edition written by Karl Brettig and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-11-18 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights key principles emerging from the process of implementing an entire community and government approach to supporting families at risk of vulnerability. Drawing on the expertise of a number of practitioners and researchers, it also examines the efficacy of some of the early intervention and prevention strategies developed through the Australian Communities for Children initiative. It will be of particular interest to community services, education and child welfare practitioners and policy makers involved with, or contemplating involvement in, implementing a place-based collective impact approach to child development, wellbeing and protection. How can we better engage with families at risk in a digital world? How can we deliver holistic, integrated support? How can we redesign our family support systems? What kind of leadership and governance will it take to implement the kind of systems change that delivers improved outcomes? These are critical questions we need to engage with if we are to collaboratively redesign inadequate, siloed approaches and build family-friendly communities that improve the lives of children and families.
