Book Building Blocks for Father Involvement Building Block 1

Download or read book Building Blocks for Father Involvement Building Block 1 written by Administration for Children, Youth, and Families (DHHS), Head Start Bureau and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly 30 years ago, leading child psychologist Michael E. Lamb reminded us that fathers are the "forgotten contributors to child development." Since then, much work has been done to explore the ways fathers uniquely contribute to the healthy development of their children. Scholars now know that boys and girls who grow up with an involved father, as well as an involved mother, have stronger cognitive and motor skills, enjoy elevated levels of physical and mental health, become better problem-solvers, and are more confident, curious, and empathetic. They also show greater moral sensitivity and self-control. As they grow, well-fathered children are substantially less likely to be sexually involved at an early age, have babies out of wedlock, or be involved in criminal or violent behavior. They are much more likely to stay in school, do well there, and go to college. Fathers can help Head Start programs become more effective in achieving positive outcomes for children. Head Start programs can help to strengthen the parenting partnership, and help fathers to be more effective in their children's lives. These five "Building Blocks for Father Involvement" will support Head Start programs in their efforts to promote father involvement. "Building Block 1" provides up-to-date research on the essential role that fathers play in the healthy development of their children. It is important that Head Start staff and parents understand the importance of the parenting partnership and why fathers are essential to children's well-being. This knowledge will help them to better meet the needs of families and children. (Contains 11 resources and 46 endnotes.).

Book Handbook of Father Involvement

Download or read book Handbook of Father Involvement written by Natasha J. Cabrera and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 689 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together experts from diverse scientific disciplines who share an interest in the topic of father involvement. Unlike most books in the field, which tend to solely draw from a psychological perspective, this Handbook merges theories and research from the unique fields of psychology, economics, demography sociology, anthropology, and social policy. For the most part, research on fathering is motivated by concern for children's well-being. Social scientists share a core set of questions, including: *"Who are fathers?" *"What is father involvement and how does it affect children and families?" *"What are the determinants of father involvement?" *"How do cultural contexts shape fathers' roles in families?" This Handbook sheds light on how a cross-disciplinary approach to the study of fathering can advance knowledge about these fundamental questions. This integrative approach is fundamental to a comprehensive understanding of human development generally, and to fathering more specifically. At the core of this book are the goals of describing and understanding the nature, antecedents, and consequences of father involvement across biological status, family structure, culture, and stages in children's development--both within and across scientific boundaries. Each of the scientific disciplines represented offers unique methodological and theoretical approaches to the study of fathering and to the interpretation of behavioral patterns that characterize ecological systems that include--as well as extend beyond--family units. Together, the chapters offer provocative and challenging insight into the nature and meaning of fatherhood and father involvement by questioning longstanding assumptions about fathers' roles in the lives of families and children in current history.

Book Conceptualizing and Measuring Father Involvement

Download or read book Conceptualizing and Measuring Father Involvement written by Randal D. Day and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-10-03 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After decades of focusing on the mother's role in parenting, family studies researchers have turned their attention to the role of the father in parenting and family development. The results shed new light on childhood development and question conventional wisdom by showing that beyond providing the more traditional economic support of the family, fathers do indeed matter when it comes to raising a child. Stemming from a series of workshops and publications sponsored by the Family and Child Well-Being Network, under the federal fatherhood initiative of the National Institute of Child Health and Development, this comprehensive volume focuses on ways of measuring the efficacy of father involvement in different scenarios, using different methods of assessment and different populations. In the process, new research strategies and new parental paradigms have been formulated to include paternal involvement. Moreover, this volume contains articles from a variety of influences while addressing the task of finding the missing pieces of the fatherhood construct that would work for new age, as well as traditional and minority fathers. The scope of this discussion offers topics of interest to basic researchers, as well as public policy analysts.

Book excerpt: This second edition reviews the new research findings and theoretical advances on fathers, families, child development, programs, and policies that have occurred in the past decade. Contributors from a range of disciplines and countries showcase contemporary findings within a new common chapter structure. All of the chapters are either extensively revised or entirely new. Book The Heart of a Father

Download or read book The Heart of a Father written by Ken Canfield and published by Northfield Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every father has a hidden desire for his children -- to see them surpass him. How can this come about? Ken Canfield gives a three-part blueprint: First, a dad should examine his own heart. Next, he should take steps to improve the way he connects with his children. Then he should take a longer range view and plan specifically for a lifetime of involved fathering. Based on years of careful research involving thousands of dads, this book is a solid reference tool for dads. Canfield's three-part blueprint addresses:-A father's past. A father should resolve his relationship with his own father in order to effectively build a relationship with his children.-How to make a dad's house a home. Canfield explains how to build the four 'walls' or dimensions, of fathering: Involvement, Awareness, Consistency, and Nurturing -A plan for the future. From being a new father to being a grandfather, dads face challenges at each stage of their life. With the long-range perspective this book provides, fathers can anticipate and prepare for the changing situations they'll face.

Book Full Throttle Into Fatherhood

Download or read book Full Throttle Into Fatherhood written by Roy Don Wooten and published by . This book was released on 2019-07 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This curriculum was developed to help people who want to help fathers and expectant fathers achieve success. . The history of involving male teachers to help primarily young urban men who are about to become fathers had consisted of good-hearted upper middle class Christian men giving a lecture about what it means to be a father. The success of the program had been dismal as participants frequently reported that the instructors told too many personal stories, preached concepts they did not understand, and were too out of touch with their generation and their personal cultures. In response to this problem, we set out to develop a tool to give good-hearted upper middle class Christian men that would help them find success in their efforts to help young fathers learn what it means to be a father. This curriculum is meant to be an easy tool for helping volunteers and paraprofessionals be effective in educating fathers and expectant fathers to: 1)Discuss what manhood in our culture means; 2)Discover their powerful role in positive child outcomes for children; 3) Uncover common road blocks good fathers have in being successful fathers; 4)Learn how their fatherhood role is impacted by their experience of their father and father figures; 5) Understand how to handle challenges in relationship with their child's mom; 6) Identify common internal road blocks within men to fulfilling their important fatherhood role. The curriculum has been developed to work in a 2 hour training class for expectant and new fathers. However, if taken slowly, it could be taught in multiple sessions over time or in an expanded time frame. The curriculum is purposefully written in simple language for full participation across cultures. It is developed with the intention of having one two hour session because that is the model of the program for which it was developed. For that reason, the education materials are not comprehensive on the covered subject matter, but rather built for the purpose of giving a brief overview of the subjects covered. In our experience, repetition of the material has been helpful for participants to grasp in greater detail the concepts presented. Our intention is that this curriculum will be easily administered in a low tech or high tech environment, with or without use of program video and slides. We encourage facilitators to become familiar with the all aspects of the curriculum so that fathers and expectant fathers who attend the class will receive the content of the program even if there are problems with electronic equipment. It is our intention to not be overly religious with the material. Although the principles taught in this class have firm biblical basis, this curriculum is developed intentionally to serve people of all faiths and no faith. It is our intention to impact the next generation by impacting new and young fathers. We trust that the facilitators of this curriculum (within the policies of the organization or ministry within which they are providing services) will follow up with fathers interested in learning more about a relationship with God or more about what it means to be a father.
