Book The Asia Pacific Security Lexicon

Download or read book The Asia Pacific Security Lexicon written by David H. Capie and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 2002 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the turbulent decade since the ending of the Cold War in Europe, a new element of the international relations of Asia and the Pacific has been the emergence of multilateral security dialogues. Both in governmental arenas such as the ASEAN Regional Forum and numerous "track two" channels including the Council for Security Co-operation in Asia-Pacific, it has been a decade of creative interaction and new thinking. The Asia-Pacific Security Lexicon identifies the key phrases and ideas that have been the foundation of these dialogues, looking at their origins in international diplomacy and tracing their specific adaptation and modification to the conditions of a trans-Pacific setting. Of interest to both theoreticians and practitioners, the Lexicon is at once a handbook for regional diplomacy and an assessment of the factors that have shaped regional discussions.

Book Asia Pacific Security Lexicon Upated 2nd Edition

Download or read book Asia Pacific Security Lexicon Upated 2nd Edition written by David Capie and published by Flipside Digital Content Company Inc.. This book was released on 2003-08-01 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ending of the Cold War opened a new debate across the Pacific about the meaning of security and the new regional multilateral institutions that were beginning to emerge. The first edition of the The Asia-Pacific Security Lexicon, published in 2002, identified and defined the key concepts and ideas central to security discourse in the region. This second edition updates all of the entries and examines the origins and meanings of some of the new terms in common usage in a different historical setting, among them "e;terrorism"e;, "e;pre-emption"e;, "e;preventive war"e;, "e;a la carte multilateralism"e;, "e;coalition of the willing"e;, and China's "e;peaceful rise"e;. And it looks at how concepts such as "e;human security"e; and "e;non-traditional security"e; have evolved and found new adherents. Both a diplomatic handbook and theoretical exploration, the Lexicon is based on the analysis of more than 3,000 books, articles, conference reports, and speeches. It does not aim to resolve the disagreements about how words are used. Rather, it makes their evolution clearer for academics and practitioners seeking consensual knowledge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study addresses the dearth of critical and/or post-positivist perspectives in security studies of and about the Asia-Pacific region. It demonstrates how regional communities of security specialists and intellectuals, including knowledge communities such as ASEAN Institutes of Strategic and International Studies (ASEAN-ISIS) and the Council for Security Cooperation in the Asia-Pacific (CSCAP) have contributed to just such a state-centric, political imaginary at the expense of alternative ideas while promoting and legitimizing their own identities as authorities on regional security.

Book Asian Pacific Security and the ASEAN Regional Forum

Download or read book Asian Pacific Security and the ASEAN Regional Forum written by K.S. Balakrishnan and published by Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research. This book was released on 1998-07-07 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study deals with two major issue-areas: the evolving context of Asian-Pacific security and the role of the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) as a security dialogue mechanism. While the latter has been heralded as a forum that is pan-regional in scope, there is continuing concern that its mandate should extend beyond confidence-building measures to address substantive security issues affecting the region. A particular issue is whether ARF can mitigate or prevent conflict in a region in which there are still unresolved territorial disputes and military insecurity. Consequently, the search for a viable, all-encompassing pan-regional security apparatus is a continuing theme and endeavor in Asia-Pacific since the end of the Cold War, although economically the region has enjoyed the fastest growth-rate in the world in the last decade. A prevailing notion of "uncertainty" exists and a major concern is the role of the US, which some fear exercises a unipolar presence not necessarily "healthy" in the long-run for the region. Nonetheless, the US is regarded as a key actor that will deter the rise of "new hegemons" and reduce the risk of militarism. The paper concludes by drawing comparisons from the Asian-Pacific experiences for the Gulf.

Book ASEAN and Regional Order

Download or read book ASEAN and Regional Order written by Amitav Acharya and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-05-30 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Founded in 1967, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has emerged as one of the most successful regional organizations in the world. This book discusses the future of ASEAN against a backdrop of a growing US–China rivalry and the security implications of COVID-19. Chapters in this book move through a history of ASEAN and its multilateral institutions, including the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) and the East Asia Summit (EAS), featuring rare photographic material to contextualize both recent developments in regional security and projections for ASEAN’s prospects. Key concepts and terms are unpacked throughout, with the chapters focusing on rapidly changing international and regional environments, economic insecurities such as trade conflicts, human rights, and ASEAN identity, and providing extensive analysis of the factors challenging the principle ASEAN Centrality and the Indo-Pacific security architecture. The concept of security community frames this book, despite being subject to change if intraregional discord and institutional stagnation take hold. As a discussion of the role and future of ASEAN in a pivotal period of world history, ASEAN and Regional Order will prove vital to both students and scholars of international relations, regional organizations, and Asian studies more broadly.

Book The Emerging Asia Pacific Security Community

Download or read book The Emerging Asia Pacific Security Community written by Stephen H. Ayling and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this essay is to propose the Australian - US development of a generic multinational support framework in the Asia Pacific Region to foster stability. Current developments in the region present an ideal opportunity for the initiative to be introduced. This will enhance the capacity of regional nations to participation in future regional peace support operations in more capable adhoc coalitions. Early introduction will guide force developments towards greater interoperability, and generate more versatile national military forces. Greater variation in the available military options for political decision will follow. The framework will allow nations to develop more interoperable forces, which are affordable, and consistent with the national security requirements. Implementation can be guided by use of a proposed interoperability assessment model. Evaluation will highlight capability shortfalls from both national and regional security perspectives. The resultant limitations on force integration options, can either be acted upon, or alternatively be accepted as capability shortfall. The evolution of the multinational support framework will be supported politically if success is demonstrated. The initiative is consistent with the objectives of the emerging Asia Pacific security community and can create the foundations for future operations.
