Book Manager s Guide to Contingency Planning for Disasters

Download or read book Manager s Guide to Contingency Planning for Disasters written by Kenneth N. Myers and published by . This book was released on 1999-09-07 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the help of an implementation strategy, guidelines for minimizing development costs, and insight into a proven plan development methodology, Manager's Guide to Contingency Planning for Disasters: Protecting Vital Facilities and Critical Operations helps you to: * Establish a corporate contingency plan policy and strategy that will ensure timely completion of a plan with minimal disruption to operations. * Minimize plan development costs * Understand the importance of conducting briefings to communicate the proper mindset before the plan development process begins. * Save time and money by avoiding the consultant's traditional approach of extensive information-gathering that contributes little to the development of practical solutions Remember that you have good people on your management team who don't need a lot of detailed instruction on how to do things in an emergency situation. Precisely "how" they do anything will depend on the specific nature of the disaster and the extent of the damage. Addressing complex hypothetical disaster combinations does not make good business sense. Just prepare "what if" strategies for a worst case and rely on the judgment of your line managers to cope with less severe incidents.

Book Capabilities Based Planning for Energy Security at Department of Defense Installations

Download or read book Capabilities Based Planning for Energy Security at Department of Defense Installations written by Constantine Samaras and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 2013 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Department of Defense (DoD) installations rely on the commercial electricity grid for 99 percent of their electricity needs, but extensive energy delivery outages in 2012 have reinforced that the U.S. electricity grid is vulnerable to disruptions from natural hazards and actor-induced outages, such as physical or cyber attacks. In the event of a catastrophic disaster--such as a severe hurricane, massive earthquake, or large-scale terrorist attack--DoD installations would also serve as a base for emergency services. To enhance energy security, DoD has identified diversifying energy sources and increasing efficiency in DoD operations as critical goals. But how to enhance energy security across the portfolio of installations is not clear and several questions remain unanswered: Energy security for how long? Under what conditions? At what cost? The underlying analytical questions are, what critical capabilities do U.S. installations provide, and how can DoD maintain these capabilities during an energy services disruption in the most cost-effective manner? Answering these questions requires a systems approach that incorporates technological, economic, and operational uncertainties. Using portfolio analysis methods for assessing capability options, this paper presents a framework to evaluate choices among energy security strategies for DoD installations. This framework evaluates whether existing or proposed installation energy security strategies enhance DoD capabilities and evaluates strategy cost-effectiveness.

Book The Astronaut s Cookbook

  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2009-10-31
  • ISBN : 144190624X
  • Pages : 224 pages

Download or read book The Astronaut s Cookbook written by Charles T. Bourland and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-10-31 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Astronauts, cosmonauts, and a very limited number of people have experienced eating space food due to the unique processing and packaging required for space travel. This book allows anyone with a normal kitchen to prepare space food. Since some of the processing such as freeze dehydration, and packaging cannot be accomplished in the normal kitchen, many of the recipes will not produce the food that would be launched in space, but will prepare food similar to what the astronauts would eat after they had added the water to the food in space. Many of the space foods are prepared to the point of ready to eat, and then frozen and freeze dried. Food preparation in this book stops at the point of ready to eat before the freezing and dehydrating takes place. Recipes in this book are extracted from the NASA food specifications and modified for preparation in a normal kitchen. The book will contain the following chapters: Introduction, Appetizers, Beverages, Bread and Tortillas, Cookies, Sandwiches, Desserts, Main Dishes, Soups and Salads, Vegetables, and Future Space Foods. Interesting tidbits of space food history will be spread throughout the book. Examples like; did NASA invent Tang?, who was the first person to eat in space?, the Gemini sandwich fiasco, why there is no alcohol in U.S. space food systems, astronauts favorite food, etc.
