Book excerpt: Buglers on the Home Front studies an important, yet under-examined group of dissident writers active in Chinese leftist literary circles around the time of the war against Japan (1937–45). Writers studied include Hu Feng (the spiritual leader of the school), Cao Bai, Qiu Dongping, A Long, Jia Zhifang, Lu Ling, and Ji Pang. As the first book-length study in English of the Qiyue school, it utilizes a broad range of primary and secondary sources and combines a variety of approaches and concerns—intellectual history, political history, literary history, and literary criticism—to introduce an overlooked dissenting voice in modern Chinese literature. The book's investigation of the roles of subjectivity and domestic cultural criticism reveal the tensions within an environment generally known for its homogenization by nationalist sentiments on the one hand and by Marxist discourse on the other. While situating the Qiyue school historically and relationally, Buglers on the Home Front not only revises the general impression of China's wartime literature but also uses the school as an example to call attention to the crucial influence of cultural politics on modern literature.

The wide range of topics addressed by this international group of scholars includes twentieth-century literature produced in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and mainland China; film, art, history, popular culture, and literary and cultural criticism; as well as the geographies of migration and diaspora. One of the volume’s provocative suggestions is that the old model of area studies—an offshoot of U.S. Cold War strategy that found its anchorage in higher education—is no longer feasible for the diverse and multifaceted experiences that are articulated under the rubric of “Chineseness.” As Rey Chow argues in her introduction, the notion of a monolithic Chineseness bound ultimately to mainland China is, in itself, highly problematic because it recognizes neither the material realities of ethnic minorities within China nor those of populations in places such as Tibet, Taiwan, and post–British Hong Kong. Above all, this book demonstrates that, as the terms of a chauvinistic sinocentrism become obsolete, the critical use of theory—particularly by younger China scholars whose enthusiasm for critical theory coincides with changes in China’s political economy in recent years—will enable the emergence of fresh connections and insights that may have been at odds with previous interpretive convention. Although the form may seem unusual for representing China's social and political crises in the mid-twentieth century, Wang contends that national cataclysm and mass movements intensified Chinese lyricism in extraordinary ways. Wang calls attention to the form's vigor and variety at an unlikely juncture in Chinese history and the precarious consequences it brought about: betrayal, self-abjuration, suicide, and silence. Despite their divergent backgrounds and commitments, the writers, artists, and intellectuals discussed in this book all took lyricism as a way to explore selfhood in relation to solidarity, the role of the artist in history, and the potential for poetry to illuminate crisis. They experimented with poetry, fiction, film, intellectual treatise, political manifesto, painting, calligraphy, and music. Western critics, Wang shows, also used lyricism to critique their perilous, epic time. He reads Martin Heidegger, Theodor Adorno, Cleanth Brooks, and Paul de Man, among others, to complete his portrait. The Chinese case only further intensifies the permeable nature of lyrical discourse, forcing us to reengage with the dominant role of revolution and enlightenment in shaping Chinese—and global—modernity. Wang's remarkable survey reestablishes Chinese lyricism's deep roots in its own native traditions, along with Western influences, and realizes the relevance of such a lyrical calling of the past century to our time.
