Book Plagues Apocalypses and Bug Eyed Monsters

Download or read book Plagues Apocalypses and Bug Eyed Monsters written by Heather Urbanski and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-01-24 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Speculative fiction--both science fiction and fantasy--reflects, among other things, the fears of the culture that created it, contributing (perhaps unconsciously) to our efforts to prevent our fears from coming true. While the names and media change over time, the themes of speculative fiction have a long history. Nineteenth century works such as Frankenstein and The Invisible Man contain many of the same messages as the more modern tales of Terminator, Jurassic Park and even Buffy, the Vampire Slayer, although almost a century separates their creation. This critical study discusses the ways in which speculative fiction reflects societal fears and analyzes how such cautionary tales contribute to society's efforts to avoid the realization of these fears. Beginning with a discussion of the nature of speculative fiction, it takes a look at the characteristics of the cautionary tale. The core of the book, however, is the concept of the "Nightmares Model," which examines and categorizes the repetition of specific themes within the genre. The dangers of science and technology, the perils of power, and the threat of the unknown are discussed as recurrent themes within a variety of works in prose, film and television. Works analyzed range from Twenty-Thousand Leagues Under the Sea to 2001: A Space Odyssey to The Blair Witch Project. Sources include the author's own observations as a member of the genre's fandom, a variety of published commentaries and the perspectives of contemporary professionals gained through personal interviews and panel discussions.

Book Bug Eyed Monsters Bimbos

Download or read book Bug Eyed Monsters Bimbos written by Isaac Asimov and published by Phoenix Pick. This book was released on 2011-09 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who better to parody science fiction than science fiction authors themselves? *** In this classic collection of stories, compiled by Mike Resnick (winner of five Hugos, plus a plethora of other awards in multiple categories), such prominent authors as Arthur C. Clarke, Isaac Asimov, Barry Malzberg and a host of others take their pens and wits to make fun of themselves and the genre they live for. *** This collection was originally titled Shaggy B.E.M. Stories and was compiled exclusively for the 1988 Worldcon (Nolacon II). Seventy- five percent of the original edition sold out over the Worldcon weekend and the rest disappeared soon after. *** Phoenix Pick is proud to republish this classic collection of parodies. All the original stories are included and the only changes that have been made are corrections of typos and other mistakes. One new poem ('There's a Bimbo on the Cover' by Michael F. Flynn) has been added to the book for obvious reasons-it just begged to belong to this irreverent collection.

Book Set Theory The Structure of Arithmetic

Download or read book Set Theory The Structure of Arithmetic written by Norman T. Hamilton and published by Courier Dover Publications. This book was released on 2018-05-16 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text is formulated on the fundamental idea that much of mathematics, including the classical number systems, can best be based on set theory. Beginning with a discussion of the rudiments of set theory, authors Norman T. Hamilton and Joseph Landin lead readers through a construction of the natural number system, discussing the integers and the rational numbers, and concluding with an in-depth examination of the real numbers. Drawn from lecture notes for a course intended primarily for high school mathematics teachers, this volume was designed to answer the question, "What is a number?" and to provide a foundation for the study of abstract algebra, elementary Euclidean geometry, and analysis. Upon completion of this treatment — which is suitable for high school mathematics teachers and advanced high school students — readers should be well prepared for introductory courses in abstract algebra and real variables.

This book is the first comprehensive account of Vietnam’s natural history in English. Illustrated with maps, photographs, and thirty-five original watercolor illustrations, the book offers a complete tour of the country’s plants and animals along with a full discussion of the factors shaping their evolution and distribution. Separate chapters focus on northern, central, and southern Vietnam, regions that encompass tropics, subtropics, mountains, lowlands, wetland and river regions, delta and coastal areas, and offshore islands. The authors provide detailed descriptions of key natural areas to visit, where a traveler might explore limestone caves or glimpse some of the country’s twenty-seven monkey and ape species and more than 850 bird species. The book also explores the long history of humans in the country, including the impact of the Vietnam-American War on plants and animals, and describes current efforts to conserve Vietnam’s complex, fragile, and widely threatened biodiversity.

Book GREBO

  • Author : Rich Deakin
  • Publisher : SCB Distributors
  • Release : 2021-10-07
  • ISBN : 1909394807
  • Pages : 483 pages

Download or read book GREBO written by Rich Deakin and published by SCB Distributors. This book was released on 2021-10-07 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: West Midlands 1980s, home to heavy metal. Black Sabbath and Judas Priest are household names, but over the smoking chimneys and factory yards something new and equally ugly formsa 'Grebo' was a media constructed music genre that even today sends a shudder down the spines of discerning music fans and critics. A homegrown proto-grunge a counterpart to the likes of Butthole Surfers, Mudhoney, early Nirvana, Alice In Chains, and Soundgarden in the US a grebo was a British phenomenon that drew on an eclectic range of influences, from punk, 60s garage and psychedelia, through to 70s heavy rock and thrash metal. It foreshadowed rave culture and was steeped in class politics. GAYE BYKERS ON ACID and CRAZYHEAD hailed from Leicester. They were not the first bands to be labelled grebo but they were the most unashamedly unkempt and came to be considered its greatest exponents. They were aa burst of dirty thundera and almost no one liked them. Based on interviews with band members, friends, fans, and roadies, this book is an uncompromising history of an overlooked music scene. Rich Deakin charts its course via the changing fortunes of the Bykers and Crazyhead, taking us on the booze-filled tour buses, behind the dodgy deals and onto the international stage and back again (with a pitstop for a rock movie that swallows lots of money). Their careers were short, but the two bands managed to shake up the UK indie scene and along the way became Britain's unlikely ambassadors of rock following the collapse of Soviet Russia. Strap yourself in for a rocket ride of a book. This is GREBO! a the complete loud and lousy story!
