Book excerpt: This interdisciplinary study is the first book to provide a complete survey of Śrī Nālandā Mahāvihāra from the perspective of its educational curricula as well as its religious influence. It provides detailed descriptions of the origin, growth, management, and academic and cultural life of Nālandā, with particular attention to its pedagogy, curriculum, teachers, and students. It also presents an alternative interpretation of nationalist and popular notions about Śrī Nālandā as an international university and proves that it was, at its core, a Buddhist monastery and an institution of Buddhist learning focused on the study and promotion of Buddhism.

Book excerpt: This book describes the Buddhism of India on the basis of the comparison of all the available original sources in various languages. It falls into three approximately equal parts. The first is a reconstruction of the original Buddhism presupposed by the traditions of the different schools known to us. It uses primarily the established methods of textual criticism, drawing out of the oldest extant texts of the different schools their common kernel. This kernel of doctrine is presumably common Buddhism of the period before the great schisms of the fourth and third centuries BC. It may be substantially the Buddhism of the Buddha himself, though this cannot be proved: at any rate, it is a Buddhism presupposed by the schools as existing about a hundred years after the Parinirvana of the Buddha, and there is no evidence to suggest that it was formulated by anyone other than the Buddha and his immediate followers. The second part traces the development of the 'Eighteen Schools' of early Buddhism, showing how they elaborated their doctrines out of the common kernel. Here we can see to what extent the Sthaviravada, or 'Theravada' of the Pali tradition, among others, added to or modified the original doctrine. The third part describes the Mahayana movement and the Mantrayana, the way of the bodhisattva and the way of ritual. The relationship of the Mahayana to the early schools is traced in detail, with its probable affiliation to one of them, the Purva Saila, as suggested by the consensus of the evidence. Particular attention is paid in this book to the social teaching of Buddhism, the part which relates to the 'world' rather than to nirvana and which has been generally neglected in modern writings of Buddhism.

Book Ancient BUDDHIST UNIVERSITIES in Indian Sub Continent

Download or read book Ancient BUDDHIST UNIVERSITIES in Indian Sub Continent written by J. B. Barua and published by Fulton Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2016-07-06 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book presents a brief account of the great higher learning Buddhist Institutions of Ancient India. Some of those flourished several centuries before the higher learning institutions of the then western world. The reader may have comprehensive ideas of the education imparted in those institutions during the long period of about 2,000 years beginning with the 5th century BC and ending with the 12th century AD. The Universities of ancient India do not connote all the features possessed by the modern Universities of the East and the West of present day. But those Universities of ancient India had also impressive teaching and research program. Many of the teachers of those universities were scholars of very high eminence and repute. In addition, there existed very ideal teacher-student relationship, which has no parallel in the long history of educational thought and practice. This book will enable the reader to compare the present institutions with those of ancient India and realize that the centers of high learning in ancient India were unique in their organization and scholarship during those distant times when elsewhere in the world very few had thought of organized education at the university level.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Description: In Ancient India education was religion and religion as education. However, we have very little idea till now about how our education system in Ancient India had emerged out of our religious scriptures, how it had changed in response to the changing conditions in our past society and how it had contributed to the development of a prosperous and glosrious civilisation which has now become our proud heritage. Based on a critical study of our religious scriptures, Vedic, Buddhist and Jaina, as available in English, German and French translations, this book attempts to delineate these developments. Written largely for a non-specialist audience in India and abroad, this book will be useful not only for the students of history but also for those interested in our Ancient Indian history and culture.

Book Education in Ancient India

Download or read book Education in Ancient India written by Dr Suvarna Nalapat and published by D C Books. This book was released on 2012-12-15 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indian Educational system is the most ancient Educational systems in the world. Vedic,Postvedic and Buddhist periods had sound Educational policies , methods of learning , teaching ,evaluation and accreditation, syllabi and curricula, to suit every wake of life. Sanskrit enjoyed the status of common Educational language to unify the nation from Himalaya to Kanyakumari . But regional languages were not neglected. They flourished and translations of Sanskrit works into regional languages was done. Kerala, and the west coast of India in general , had the most ancient University of Valabhi which gave the title "e;Vallabha"e; , Sreevallabha, Sakalakalaavallabha etc to its scholars. The Valabhi University was existent from Prevedic and Vedic times and during the Budhist period , two scholars (Nandins) from Valabhi University established Nalanda University and from that time onwards the Vallabha kings became chancellors and vice chancellors of both these Universities. The Vallabhas declined when Vice chancellorship of Nalanda went to Bengal kings and subsequently when Cholas destroyed the Sreevallabha power of Kerala, Karnataka and Srilanka ( as described in the Manimangalam sasana of the Chola kings). The story of the educational system of India under Valabhi University in Vedic and Budhist period , its peculiarities, merits and demerits, the long family tree of the chancellors of Valabhi right from time of Parasurama upto the present Marthandavarma Uthradam Thirunal of Venad (Thiruvithamkoor Raajavansa) are explored in this work. It also throws light into the practices of the ancient Indians which might be analysed and made use of for National Integration and Global citizenship for world peace and a better Eduational system based on Values and cultural Integration.
