Book excerpt: This report describes the work performed by Lockheed Palo Alto Research Labora tory, Palo Alto, California 94304. The work was sponsored by Air Force Office of Scientific Research, Bolling AFB, Washington, D. C. under Grant F49620-77-C-0l22 and by the Flight Dynamics Laboratory, Air Force Wright Aeronautical Laboratories, Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio under Contract F3361S-76-C-31OS. The work was completed under Task 2307Nl, "Basic Research in Behavior of Metallic and Composite Components of Airframe Structures". The work was admini stered by Lt. Col. J. D. Morgan (AFOSR) and Dr. N. S. Khot (AFWAL/FIBRA). The contract work was performed between October 1977 and December 1980. The technical report was released by the Author in December 1981. Preface Many structures are assembled from parts which are thin. For example, a stiffened plate or cylindrical panel is composed of a sheet the thickness of which is small com pared to its length, breadth, and stiffener- spacing, and stiffeners the thickness of which is small compared to their _ heights and lengths. These assembled structures, loaded in compression, can buckle overall, that is sheet and stiffeners can collapse together in a general instability mode; the sheet can buckle locally between stiffeners; the stiffeners can cripple; and a variety of complex buckling interactions can occur involving local and overall deformations of both sheet and stiffeners. More complex, built-up structures can buckle in more complex and subtle ways.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As an expert in structure and stress analysis, the author has written extensively on functionally graded materials (FGMs), nonlinear vibration and dynamic response of functionally graded material plates in thermal environments, buckling and postbuckling analysis of single-walled carbon nanotubes in thermal environments. This book provides a comprehensive overview of the author's works which include significant contributions to the postbuckling behavior of plates and shells under different loading and environmental conditions. This book comprises eight chapters. Each chapter contains adequate introductory material so that an engineering graduate who is familiar with basic understanding of plates and shells will be able to follow it.

Book Resolution Of The Twentieth Century Conundrum In Elastic Stability

Download or read book Resolution Of The Twentieth Century Conundrum In Elastic Stability written by Isaac E Elishakoff and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2014-05-29 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There have been stability theories developed for beams, plates and shells — the most significant elements in mechanical, aerospace, ocean and marine engineering. For beams and plates, the theoretical and experimental values of buckling loads are in close vicinity. However for thin shells, the experimental predictions do not conform with the theory, due to presence of small geometric imperfections that are deviations from the ideal shape. This fact has been referred to in the literature as ‘embarrassing’, ‘paradoxical’ and ‘perplexing’. Indeed, the popular adage, “In theory there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice there is”, very much applies to thin shells whose experimental buckling loads may constitute a small fraction of the theoretical prediction based on classical linear theory; because in practice, engineers use knockdown factors that are not theoretically substantiated. This book presents a uniform approach that tames this prima-donna-like and capricious behavior of structures that has been dubbed the ‘imperfection sensitivity’ — thus resolving the conundrum that has occupied the best minds of elastic stability throughout the twentieth century.

Book Buckling Analysis of Laminated Anisotropic Cylinders Under Combined Loading

Download or read book Buckling Analysis of Laminated Anisotropic Cylinders Under Combined Loading written by Brian A. Kosmal and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A linear shell theory, in general laminate form, describing the buckling behavior of thin-walled laminated anisotropic circular cylinders under combined loading is derived from elasticity theory. The theory incorporates the well-known Donnell's approximations. The theory is then applied to cylinders fabricated of plys with fibers oriented at angles of zero degrees and 90 degrees with respect to the cylinder axis. The loading scheme considered is that of combined internal (or external) pressure and axial tension (or compression). Fourier series solutions are assumed and the boundary condition of clamped ends is incorporated using principles of Fourier analysis. (Author).

Book Non Classical Problems in the Theory of Elastic Stability

Download or read book Non Classical Problems in the Theory of Elastic Stability written by Isaac Elishakoff and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001-01-29 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a structure is put under an increasing compressive load, it becomes unstable and buckling occurs. Buckling is a particularly significant concern in designing shell structures such as aircraft, automobiles, ships, or bridges. This book discusses stability analysis and buckling problems and offers practical tools for dealing with uncertainties that exist in real systems. The techniques are based on two complementary theories which are developed in the text. First, the probabilistic theory of stability is presented, with particular emphasis on reliability. Both theoretical and computational issues are discussed. Secondly, the authors present the alternative to probability based on the notion of 'anti-optimization', a theory that is valid when the necessary information for probabilistic analysis is absent, that is, when only scant data are available. Design engineers, researchers, and graduate students in aerospace, mechanical, marine, and civil engineering who are concerned with issues of structural integrity will find this book a useful reference source.

Book Buckling of Fiber reinforced Circular Cylinders Under Axial Compression

Download or read book Buckling of Fiber reinforced Circular Cylinders Under Axial Compression written by R. C. Tennyson and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analytical solution for the buckling load was obtained by using cylindrical shells. An analytical solution for the buckling load was obtained by using Koiter's theory for axisymmetric and asymmetric imperfections. For axisymmetric imperfections, numerical evaluation were carried out for the case of three-ply composite shells of glass, boron and graphite-epoxy construc-tion. It was found that drastic buckling load reductions occurred comparable to isotropic shells for small values of imperfection amplitudes. For each cylindrical shell, test model fabricated from three ply preimpregnated glass-epoxy, an equivalent imperfection amplitude was computed by using the root mean square imperfection measurements obtained from several generators. Fairly good agreement was found between the analytically predicted and experimental buckling loads.
