Download or read book Baseball in Columbus written by James R. Tootle and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2002-11-01 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the spring of 1865, the first spring after the end of the Civil War, three baseball clubs were founded in downtown Columbus. This local enthusiasm for the game reflected the national trend during the post-war era, when baseball, or "base ball" as it was called, was spreading rapidly throughout the United States. Baseball in Columbus begins with these earliest baseball pioneers and tells the story of the national pastime in the capital city right up to the present-day Columbus Clippers of the International League. Columbus first made the "big leagues" in 1883 with the Columbus Buckeyes of the American Association, and local fans have embraced the city's teams and players ever since. Several of baseball's greats once wore a Columbus uniform during their minor league careers, including Enos Slaughter, Joe Garagiola, Harvey Haddix, Willie Stargell, Derek Jeter, and Bernie Williams.

However, the fact is jazz has been practiced in Ohio and with a vengeance. For 30 years, these authors have been researching and documenting the history of music, particularly jazz in Ohio. Their 1999 exhibit at the Ohio Historical Society, Jazz Ohio " ran for twelve months before portions of it moved to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The exhibit inspired the book, and much of what you will read here has never been brought together in one place before and it may well change the way you think about jazz. And Ohio."

Book excerpt: John Roberts liked playing with words and learned to write well. His descriptions of life in the classroom, at candlelit singing schools and debates, on madcap sleighing races and camp meeting binges - anywhere he could observe human behavior - help restore our memory of the primitive beginnings of common schools and of country and village life in a region still emerging from its pioneer past.
