In late Victorian times, when new inventions cause both excitement and terror, a mysterious death at a zoological lecture brings together two unlikely allies in a quest through London's upper crust and underbelly to unravel the ingenious murder method and killer behind it. Miss Merula Merriweather is not like other women her age: instead of hunting for a husband at balls and soirees she spends her time in a conservatory hatching exotic creatures. As the Royal Zoological Society won't accept a woman's accomplishments, she has her uncle Rupert take credit for her achievements. But at a zoological lecture, the guest of honor dies after contact with one of Merula's butterflies, and Merula's uncle is arrested for murder. In an attempt to safeguard evidence to prove his innocence, Merula almost gets killed but for the timely interference of enigmatic Lord Raven Royston. Viewing natural history as a last resort to regain respectability lost by too many dubious business investments, Raven didn't expect his first lecture to take a murderous turn. Feeling partially responsible because he encouraged Merula to release the gigantic butterfly from the glass case in which it was kept, Raven suggests they solve the puzzle of Lady Sophia's sudden death together by looking closer at her relations with estranged friends, long suffering staff and the man groomed to be her heir, so close to her money and yet unable to touch any of it. With the police looking for them, and every new discovery raising more questions than answers, especially about the murder method which left no traces of foul play on the body, Merula will have to risk her own life to get at the truth and save her uncle from the gallows in The Butterfly Conspiracy, Vivian Conroy’s enchanting series debut.

After he graduated from high school, his parents moved to Urbana, Illinois, so that he could attend the University of Illinois while living at home. Money was tight during those Depression years. After earning his bachelors degree, he married Elizabeth Loeffler, also an Illinois graduate, and they began a life together that included three daughters: Jane, Marcia, and Lockie, now deceased. For the next twenty-five years, Dr. Swengel, known as Mac by most, taught school, farmed, and remodeled a one-room school house to become the family home. He founded a community orchestra known as the Fithian Farmhouse Filharmonic and was active in a local church. When working on his masters degree in the early 60s, he became interested in Montessori educationbelieving it to be the right beginning for schools using what he would eventually name Mutual Instruction. In 1963, he went to California to pursue more Montessori training. The following year, he, Elizabeth, and their youngest daughter, Lockie, moved to Los Angeles where he earned a Ph.D. from UCLA and developed YAK Phonics. In 1969, he and his wife moved to San Diego where he became a professor at the United States International University, both teaching classes and supervising student teachers at the high school and elementary levels. After retirement, he continued to study and read about education, which led to his writing The Plainston Chronicles, 1919-1951 and finally Conspiracy. Jane Swengel Creason was born in Urbana, Illinois, in 1942. She has lived in the same house since she was four, a remodeled one-room school house located on a small farm her mother inherited. She and her husband, Don, raised two children there, now both married. Their grandchildren, the fourth generation, know the old house well. Jane, who always wanted to be a teacher, earned bachelor and masters degrees from the University of Illinois. Then she began what became a forty-plus year teaching career at the grade school, middle school, high school, and community college levels. She began writing her two young adult novels, When the War Came to Hannah and The Heron Stayed, while teaching middle school. Having lived in the same house with the same husband and having taught English in the same county for much of her life, Jane describes herself as a contented Midwesterner who has put down serious roots. Sarah Creason, the cover artist, became interested in painting as a relaxing hobby while working for the Department of Agriculture in Columbia City, Indiana. Within a few years, she was studying and painting during every spare minute. After retirement, she also began to teach painting. Currently, her work is displayed at the Orchard Gallery in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where she works part-time. Sarah and Jane, who are married to brothers Cliff and Don Creason, have been sisters-in-law for many years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1741, Manhattan had the second-largest slave population of any city in the Thirteen Colonies after Charleston, South Carolina. As a result The Conspiracy of 1741, also known as the Negro Plot of 1741 broke out in New York. This rebellion is marked as one of the most controversial events in the early American history because most historians disagree as to whether such a plot existed and, if there was one, its scale. This alleged conspiracy served as an excuse for a brutal revenge of the local authorities. The main target were African slaves. As in the Salem witch trials, a few witnesses implicated many other suspects. In the end, over 100 people were hanged, exiled, or burned at the stake.

Download or read book Unfair Unbalanced written by Patrick M. Carlisle and published by Henry E Panky Enterprises. This book was released on 2004 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Called by readers "blazingly funny, divinely inspired, breathtaking, sophisticated, original, deranged, a brilliant intellect wasted, and a comedic genius," if one could stew Dave Barry, Hunter Thompson, Al Franken and David Sedaris down into a thick, tasty ragout which might then be served over noodles, that might begin to approximate the unexpectedly hilarious experience of reading Patrick Carlisle. In a thoroughly questionable and highly refutable manner, with wildly fluctuating amounts of insight and sensitivity, Mr. Carlisle examines such irrational topics of modern identity as internet dating, the fanatic right wing, the dark, dangerous appeal of Meg Ryan, the unfathomable motivations behind the comb-over, the mysterious banana test, first love, antidepressants and the heartbreaking challenge of being a Yum! Brands Man. Pessimistic but full of longing, immersed in popular culture but oddly erudite, manic and depressive in turn, deeply and absurdly tangential, profoundly deluded and yet uncomfortably honest, liberal but utterly politically incorrect . most importantly, in the words of one reviewer, Patrick Carlisle is "so horribly, mind-bogglingly funny."

Book Resisting Hitler

Download or read book Resisting Hitler written by Shareen Blair Brysac and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2002-05-23 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This gripping and heartbreaking narrative is the first full account of an American woman who gave her life in the struggle against the Nazi regime. As members of a key resistance group, Mildred Harnack and her husband, Arvid, assisted in the escape of German Jews and political dissidents, and for years provided vital economic and military intelligence to both Washington and Moscow. But in 1942, following a Soviet blunder, the Gestapo arrested, tortured, and tried some four score members of the Harnacks' group, which the Nazis dubbed the Red Orchestra. Mildred Fish-Harnack was guillotined in Berlin on February 16, 1943, on the personal instruction of Adolf Hitler--she was the only American woman to be executed as an underground conspirator during World War II. Yet as the war ended and the Cold War began, her courage, idealism, and self-sacrifice went largely unacknowledged in America and the democratic West, and were distorted and sanitized in the Communist East. Only now, with the opening of long-sealed archives from Germany, the KGB, the CIA, and the FBI, can the full story be told. In this superbly told life of an unjustly forgotten woman, Shareen Blair Brysac depicts the human side of a controversial resistance group that for too long has been portrayed as merely a Soviet espionage network.

Book In Bed with Wall Street

Download or read book In Bed with Wall Street written by Larry Doyle and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2014-01-07 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Wall Street meltdown in 2008 brought the country to its knees and spawned nationwide protests against the lack of regulation and oversight in the financial industry. But the average American still fails to fully grasp what was--and still is--happening: that the inmates run the asylum. Larry Doyle exposes how financial executives, politicians, and even the regulators charged with overseeing the banks have conspired for personal gains while deceiving largely unprotected investors, consumers, and American taxpayers. He details the shocking corruption of the SEC, FINRA, and other "financial police, " painting them as meter maids who assess nominal fines and look the other way at even the most egregious abuses. Most importantly, he unveils the revolving door of Wall Street, where countless regulators (and plenty of legislators) are former or future employees of the very firms they're tasked with overseeing. Recent bombshells--such as multi-billion dollar trading losses at JP Morgan Chase, the manipulation of interest rates via the LIBOR scandal, and money laundering with North American drug cartels and rogue nations such as Iran--are symptomatic of this corrosive culture, which has decimated consumer and investor confidence. As the big banks fight tooth and nail to avoid real reforms, this book is a timely, important, and shocking look at a hopelessly compromised system, still defenseless against the next great crash.--From publisher description.
