Book excerpt: Linear Algebra is intended primarily as an undergraduate textbook but is written in such a way that it can also be a valuable resource for independent learning. The narrative of the book takes a matrix approach: the exposition is intertwined with matrices either as the main subject or as tools to explore the theory. Each chapter contains a description of its aims, a summary at the end of the chapter, exercises, and solutions. The reader is carefully guided through the theory and techniques presented which are outlined throughout in "How to..." text boxes. Common mistakes and pitfalls are also pointed out as one goes along. Features Written to be self-contained Ideal as a primary textbook for an undergraduate course in linear algebra Applications of the general theory which are of interest to disciplines outside of mathematics, such as engineering

Book Linear Algebra and Group Theory for Physicists and Engineers

Download or read book Linear Algebra and Group Theory for Physicists and Engineers written by Yair Shapira and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-16 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook demonstrates the strong interconnections between linear algebra and group theory by presenting them simultaneously, a pedagogical strategy ideal for an interdisciplinary audience. Being approached together at the same time, these two topics complete one another, allowing students to attain a deeper understanding of both subjects. The opening chapters introduce linear algebra with applications to mechanics and statistics, followed by group theory with applications to projective geometry. Then, high-order finite elements are presented to design a regular mesh and assemble the stiffness and mass matrices in advanced applications in quantum chemistry and general relativity. This text is ideal for undergraduates majoring in engineering, physics, chemistry, computer science, or applied mathematics. It is mostly self-contained—readers should only be familiar with elementary calculus. There are numerous exercises, with hints or full solutions provided. A series of roadmaps are also provided to help instructors choose the optimal teaching approach for their discipline. The second edition has been revised and updated throughout and includes new material on the Jordan form, the Hermitian matrix and its eigenbasis, and applications in numerical relativity and electromagnetics.

Book Applied Numerical Linear Algebra

Download or read book Applied Numerical Linear Algebra written by James W. Demmel and published by SIAM. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed for use by first-year graduate students from a variety of engineering and scientific disciplines, this comprehensive textbook covers the solution of linear systems, least squares problems, eigenvalue problems, and the singular value decomposition. The author, who helped design the widely-used LAPACK and ScaLAPACK linear algebra libraries, draws on this experience to present state-of-the-art techniques for these problems, including recommendations of which algorithms to use in a variety of practical situations. Algorithms are derived in a mathematically illuminating way, including condition numbers and error bounds. Direct and iterative algorithms, suitable for dense and sparse matrices, are discussed. Algorithm design for modern computer architectures, where moving data is often more expensive than arithmetic operations, is discussed in detail, using LAPACK as an illustration. There are many numerical examples throughout the text and in the problems at the ends of chapters, most of which are written in Matlab and are freely available on the Web. Demmel discusses several current research topics, making students aware of both the lively research taking place and connections to other parts of numerical analysis, mathematics, and computer science. Some of this material is developed in questions at the end of each chapter, which are marked Easy, Medium, or Hard according to their difficulty. Some questions are straightforward, supplying proofs of lemmas used in the text. Others are more difficult theoretical or computing problems. Questions involving significant amounts of programming are marked Programming. The computing questions mainly involve Matlab programming, and others involve retrieving, using, and perhaps modifying LAPACK code from NETLIB.
