Book The Morelands and Bryn Athyn

Download or read book The Morelands and Bryn Athyn written by and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Morelands and Bryn Athyn brings the four communities of Bryn Athyn, Hatboro, and Lower and Upper Moreland townships into focus through many rare and unpublished photographs. Settled in the early 1700s and located on Old York Road, Hatboro was an early center of commerce and travel. Later, with the development of the trolley and Willow Grove Park, the town of Willow Grove became an important center for business. Mills along the Pennypack Creek contributed to the early settlement of the communities throughout the area, especially in Lower Moreland. Finally, the railway brought not only regional development but also members of the Swedenborgian community who established their religious center in Bryn Athyn. The Morelands and Bryn Athyn captures the people and places that made the area's history so rich. From the Mineral Springs Resort to the Sorrel Horse Inn, from a Revolutionary War battle to a cathedral in Bryn Athyn, this volume is a stunning photographic history. Pictured are the homes of many of the area's first families as well as the later estates of the Pitcairn and Elkins families. Also included are the fire companies, businesses, schools, people, and institutions that have defined the area.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A haunting tribute to the heroic pioneers who shaped the American Midwest This powerful novel by Willa Cather is considered to be one of her finest works and placed Cather in the forefront of women novelists. It tells the stories of several immigrant families who start new lives in America in rural Nebraska. This powerful tribute to the quiet heroism of those whose struggles and triumphs shaped the American Midwest highlights the role of women pioneers, in particular. Written in the style of a memoir penned by Antonia’s tutor and friend, the book depicts one of the most memorable heroines in American literature, the spirited eldest daughter of a Czech immigrant family, whose calm, quite strength and robust spirit helped her survive the hardships and loneliness of life on the Nebraska prairie. The two form an enduring bond and through his chronicle, we watch Antonia shape the land while dealing with poverty, treachery, and tragedy. “No romantic novel ever written in America...is one half so beautiful as My Ántonia.” -H. L. Mencken Willa Cather (1873–1947) was an American writer best known for her novels of the Plains and for One of Ours, a novel set in World War I, for which she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1923. She was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1943 and received the gold medal for fiction from the National Institute of Arts and Letters in 1944, an award given once a decade for an author's total accomplishments. By the time of her death she had written twelve novels, five books of short stories, and a collection of poetry.

Book Bryn Athyn Historic District

Download or read book Bryn Athyn Historic District written by Ed Gyllenhaal and published by Arcadia Library Editions. This book was released on 2011-05 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bryn Athyn Historic District, a National Historic Landmark, is home to some of the most remarkable architecture in the Philadelphia area. Bryn Athyn was founded in the late 19th century by members of a Christian denomination known as the New Church, and the buildings in the historic district reflect the religious faith and vision of some of the community's earliest residents. Cairnwood, an 1895 country house in the Beaux-Arts style, was built for industrialist John Pitcairn. Cairncrest was the residence of Harold Pitcairn, one of the foremost pioneers of early American aviation. Glencairn, a magnificent castle-like mansion, was designed by Raymond Pitcairn as a home for his family and art collections and built throughout the Great Depression. Bryn Athyn Cathedral was dedicated in 1919 and dubbed a masterpiece of architectural art.

Book Chosen LP

  • Author : Chandra Hoffman
  • Publisher : Harper Collins
  • Release : 2010-08-24

  • Pages : 472 pages

Download or read book Chosen LP written by Chandra Hoffman and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2010-08-24 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Chosen, a young caseworker becomes increasingly entangled in the lives of adoptive and birth parents, with devastating results. It all begins with a fantasy: the caseworker in her "signing paperwork" charcoal suit standing alongside beaming parents cradling their adopted newborn, set against a fluorescent-lit delivery-room backdrop. It's this blissful picture that keeps Chloe Pinter, director of the Chosen Child's domestic-adoption program, happy while juggling the high demands of her boss and the incessant needs of both adoptive and biological parents. But the very job that offers her refuge from her turbulent personal life and Portland's winter rains soon becomes a battleground involving three very different couples: the Novas, well-off college sweethearts who suffered fertility problems but are now expecting their own baby; the McAdoos, a wealthy husband and desperate wife for whom adoption is a last chance; and Jason and Penny, an impoverished couple who have nothing—except the baby everyone wants. When a child goes missing, dreams dissolve into nightmares, and everyone is forced to examine what he or she really wants and where it all went wrong. Told from alternating points of view, Chosen reveals the desperate nature of desire across social backgrounds and how far people will go to get the one thing they think will be the answer.
