Book A Learning System in Histology

Download or read book A Learning System in Histology written by Deborah W. Vaughan and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2002 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This CD-ROM with accompanying manual will introduce medical, allied health, and undergraduate students to the logic of anatomical thinking and the microscopic structure of the body's tissues. Its correlation of low power with high power views, the quality of its images, and the ease of using the CD are particularly attractive features. It is not a full electronic atlas with hyperlinks of pictures to text but rather a review of morphology that supplements the histology lab where students look through a microscope at slides of tissue specimens.

Book The Impact of Food Bioactives on Health

Download or read book The Impact of Food Bioactives on Health written by Kitty Verhoeckx and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-04-29 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Infogest” (Improving Health Properties of Food by Sharing our Knowledge on the Digestive Process) is an EU COST action/network in the domain of Food and Agriculture that will last for 4 years from April 4, 2011. Infogest aims at building an open international network of institutes undertaking multidisciplinary basic research on food digestion gathering scientists from different origins (food scientists, gut physiologists, nutritionists...). The network gathers 70 partners from academia, corresponding to a total of 29 countries. The three main scientific goals are: Identify the beneficial food components released in the gut during digestion; Support the effect of beneficial food components on human health; Promote harmonization of currently used digestion models Infogest meetings highlighted the need for a publication that would provide researchers with an insight into the advantages and disadvantages associated with the use of respective in vitro and ex vivo assays to evaluate the effects of foods and food bioactives on health. Such assays are particularly important in situations where a large number of foods/bioactives need to be screened rapidly and in a cost effective manner in order to ultimately identify lead foods/bioactives that can be the subject of in vivo assays. The book is an asset to researchers wishing to study the health benefits of their foods and food bioactives of interest and highlights which in vitro/ex vivo assays are of greatest relevance to their goals, what sort of outputs/data can be generated and, as noted above, highlight the strengths and weaknesses of the various assays. It is also an important resource for undergraduate students in the ‘food and health’ arena.

Book Endocrine Regulation of Electrolyte Balance

Download or read book Endocrine Regulation of Electrolyte Balance written by F. Krück and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent experimental and clinical research performed by outstanding authorities has enabled us to characterize fundamental processes that govern the regulation of salt and water content of the body. Their results have provided not only an important gain of insight into mechanisms at the cellular level but also the possibility to integrate single cell activities into a complex organ function. Moreover, this knowledge enables scientists to develop broader concepts concerning the regulation of organ function and thus contributes to a better understanding of the overall status in health and disease. In the present volume some of these physiologists and clinicians discuss principal questions of humoral and non-humoral influences involved in the control of electro lyte and fluid content of the organism. It contains three essential topics: Data concerning basic principles of cell behaviour and transport processes are followed by the description of natriuretic substances and their influence on volume regulation. Finally, attempts are undertaken to elucidate the meaning of these basic principles for the explanation of the development of patholocigal states. This symposion was held in honor to Professor H. P. Wolff, one of the internatio nally wellknown pioneers in this field of clinical research. The editors· wish to express their graditude to the Melusin-Schwarz-Monheim GmbH for the generous support of the symposion.

Book Cellular Peptidases in Immune Functions and Diseases 2

Download or read book Cellular Peptidases in Immune Functions and Diseases 2 written by Jürgen Langner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-11 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the many special roles played by proteolytic enzymes in immune reactions, this book addresses different aspects of membrane peptidases, signal transduction via ligation of membrane peptidases (especially of dipeptidyl peptidase IV/CD26 and aminopeptidase N/CD13), and regulation of membrane peptidases in vivo and in vitro. A number of newly discovered peptidases (including cathepsin F, W and X, carboxypeptidase X, attractin) are described, with special emphasis given to the role of peptidases in immune and defense reactions and in the pathogenesis of inflammatory and other diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, pancreatitis, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease and tumours of various origins. The focus on the involvement of a selection of proteolytic enzymes in immune reactions and diseases is a unique feature of this multifaceted work , which combines biochemical, immunological and clinical research reports with literary reviews of the field.

Book Compendium of Histology

Download or read book Compendium of Histology written by Anders Rehfeld and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-09-07 with total page 670 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has been designed to help medical students succeed with their histology classes, while using less time on studying the curriculum. The book can both be used on its own or as a supplement to the classical full-curriculum textbooks normally used by the students for their histology classes. Covering the same curriculum as the classical textbooks, from basic tissue histology to the histology of specific organs, this book is formatted and organized in a much simpler and intuitive way. Almost all text is formatted in bullets or put into structured tables. This makes it quick and easy to digest, helping the student get a good overview of the curriculum. It is easy to locate specific information in the text, such as the size of cellular structures etc. Additionally, each chapter includes simplified illustrations of various histological features. The aim of the book is to be used to quickly brush up on the curriculum, e.g. before a class or an exam. Additionally, the book includes guides to distinguish between the different histological tissues and organs that can be presented to students microscopically, e.g. during a histology spot test. This guide lists the specific characteristics of the different histological specimens and also describes how to distinguish a specimen from other similar specimens. For each histological specimen, a simplified drawing and a photomicrograph of the specimen, is presented to help the student recognize the important characteristics in the microscope. Lastly, the book contains multiple “memo boxes” in which parts of the curriculum are presented as easy-to-remember mnemonics.

Download or read book Phosphate Metabolism written by Shaul Massry and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 611 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present to our readers the proceedings of the Second International Workshop on Phosphate. A short account of the history of the effort led to the Phosphate Workshops is appro priate and can be of interest to the reader. The idea for Phosphate Workshops was born in the early days of November, 1974. One of us (S. G. M. ) suggested the thought to a group of scientists gathered for a luncheon in one of the attrac tive small restaurants in Weisbaden, Germany. The purpose of the workshop was to bring together interested scientists to discuss the newer developments and the recent advances in the field of phosphate metabolism and the other related minerals. An Organizing Committee made of Shaul G. Massry (USA), Louis V. Avioli (USA), Philippe Bordier (France), Herbert Fleisch (Switzerland), and Eduardo Slatopolsky (USA) was formed. The First Workshop was held in Paris during June 5-6, 1975 and was hosted by Dr. Philippe Bordier. Its proceeding was already published. The Second Workshop took place in Heidelberg during June 28-30, 1976 and was hosted by Dr. Eberhard Ritz. Both of these workshops were extremely successful scientific endeavors, and the need for them was demonstrated by the great interest they generated among the scientific community. The Or ganizing Committee, therefore, decided to continue with the tradi tion to hold additional Workshops annually or every other year.
