The twists keep piling up in this fun and distinctively Australian debut mystery, perfect for readers of The Thursday Murder Club and Janet Evanovich. Brick Brown has problems: she hates her day job, and her beloved Uncle Baz has gone missing. Although a bartender by trade, Brick Brown has finagled herself a job on the city council to investigate a complaint that threatens to close her uncle's well-loved blues club in the heart of Melbourne. Brick suspects something strange is going on, but when her amateur sleuthing uncovers the mayor's dead body in a locked room, she's dragged into the dangerous world of dodgy developers with the reluctant help of Mitch Mitchell, a prickly war correspondent turned investigative journalist. Relying on her street smarts and an unlikely band of allies, Brick and Mitchell unearth corruption that runs deeper than just local government, and the stakes are higher than they banked on. And when Brick also discovers some terrifying information about her past, the stakes turn deadly... Book excerpt: "It had to happen. Carnaby Street was the centre of fashion in the 60s. The 70s belonged to Haight-Ashbury's flower children. Then in the 80s Melbourne gave birth to Brunswick Street - epicentre of an emerging arts movement. Three subcultures - grungers, bohemians and radical feminists collided and brought forth a dynamic that changed the face of the inner city. The meteoric rise of Brunswick Street was a cultural explosion of art, theatre, fashion, grunge, music, drugs, diverse sexuality, celebrity and politics."Maz Wilson. Brunswick Street, Art & Revolution is the story of a street that became a culture. Written by Anne Rittman and Maz Wilson, it consists of a series of interviews and colour photographs with and of the people who brought about that transformation. It teems with characters: baristas, hair-cutters, potters, comedians, painters, singers, poets, restaurateurs and more. It evokes iconic places: the Black Cat, Pigtale Pottery, The Flying Trapeze, T F Much Ballroom, Bakers, Circus Oz , Scully & Trombone and the list goes on. It bursts with visual impact: performances, artworks, architecture and the Waiters' Race for example. Here it is in its true form as a cultural, social and political history. It was a pioneering spirit which created its own centre of gravity. Early on the street had a frisson of excitement. Artists rubbing shoulders with criminals in a quarter acre block.

Download or read book High Calvinists in Action written by Ian J. Shaw and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2003-02-06 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This valuable contribution to the debate about the relation of religion to the modern city fills an important gap in the historiography of early nineteenth-century religious life. Although there is some evidence that strict doctrine led to a more restricted response to urban problems, extensive local and personal variations mean that simple generalizations should be avoided. Ian J.Shaw argues against earlier prejudiced views and shows that high Calvinists played a vigorous and successful part in the response of early nineteenth-century churches to the process of urbanization. The study includes six substantial case studies of ministers and their churches in Manchester and London. Four high Calvinist ministers are considered, with two studies of ministers holding to an evangelical Calvinist doctrine also included to provide instructive contrasts. Detailed social analysis of the congregations is based upon extensive use of manuscript and printed sources, sermons, and local and denominational press.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early Australian policing had its roots on the streets of Dublin and London, where many of Australia's first law and order enforcers hailed from. Intrigued by this connection, historian Anastasia Dukova has researched and recreated the lives of colonial police officers and criminals in her adopted home city of Brisbane. Through exploring their personal stories, Dukova highlights how biography and history are inextricably linked and reveals the differences between metropolitan aspirations and colonial reality. To Preserve and Protect exposes political power abuse, corruption, mismanagement, professional burnout, and gendered justice, issues which continue to challenge police forces.
