Download or read book Twentieth Century Christian Responses to Religious Pluralism written by David Pitman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-17 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twentieth Century Christian Responses to Religious Pluralism begins with the recognition that the traditional three-fold typology adopted by Christians in responding to other living world religions is no longer adequate and offers a much more sophisticated and developed approach. This is accomplished with particular reference to ten key Twentieth Century theologians, each of whom had significant influence in the field of inter-religious studies, both during their lifetime and beyond. The author rejects the exclusivism and triumphalism of traditional Christian approaches and argues strongly and persuasively that the future for inter-religious relationships lies in what he describes as 'classical pluralism', and in an understanding of the importance of difference for inter-faith dialogue. Presenting an accessible introduction to the contemporary issues and challenges facing all those engaged in the further development of inter-faith relationships, dialogue and partnership between the world religions, Pitman argues that the future of world peace and prosperity depends on the outcome.

Download or read book Towards a Theology of Relationship written by Michael Berra and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2024-01-25 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the theme of relationship receiving renewed attention in a variety of areas, theological expressions of the subject are also being brought back into the spotlight. Although the concept of a personal relationship with God is a common Christian expression, it is often poorly defined. Here, Michael Berra draws on the Swiss theologian Emil Brunner to redefine and rehabilitate the analogy of relationship. Basing his study primarily on Brunner's seminal work Truth as Encounter, Berra proposes that relationship ought to be the central motif for the whole of theology. He investigates the theme in light of modern relationship science, arguing that God-human interaction categorically meets the definition of a relationship, and that it is existentially intended to be intimate. Scholars and church leaders will find in Berra's approach a refreshing voice in this dynamic field.

Download or read book Systematics Critical and Constructive 1 written by Ronald R. Ray and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-08-15 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This labor of love distills Dr. Ron Ray’s lifetime reflections on the truth and meaning of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Gathered in one volume is an abundant harvest from the best of twentieth–century systematic theology. Beginning students will find here an informative and clear introductory text. Working pastors will receive a refresher course to steady and strengthen a ministry of integrity and joy. Preachers will benefit from the author’s recommendation of the “topical-biblical sermon,” an approach that leads to contemporary topics for textually-based scriptural preaching, while reinvigorating topical preaching with scriptural sturdiness. With both conviction and transparency, Ray welcomes his readers into a thoughtful conversation about why and how the Christian message still matters today. In the process, we also see firsthand how and why systematic theology can still matter today for those entrusted with proclaiming the good news of Jesus Christ. —James F. Kay, Dean and Vice President of Academic Affairs, Professor, Princeton Theological Seminary This critical and constructive perspective interacts with such fields as biblical studies, Old and New Testament theology, hermeneutics and other philosophy. Ray’s synthesis arises out of a unique theological and pastoral pilgrimage as a minister in the United States and as a missionary theologian and Christian ethicist in Nigeria and Kenya. As one might expect from a scholar who did the first PhD dissertation on Jacques Ellul, Ray writes with a forthright, probing, honest style. He criticizes authors at highly specific points, but often demonstrates indebtedness to the same scholars. He is deeply informed by the New Testament, and secondarily by the Old Testament, yet insists that interpretive dishonesty is no Christian virtue. —Leicester R. Longden, Assoc. Professor of Evangelism and Discipleship Emeritus, University of Dubuque Theological Seminary

Book excerpt: Restoring the health of the land is indispensable not only because it is the ground of our sustenance and survival, but also land has in itself the inherent worth. This book challenges humanity's indulgence, and activities of development, science and technology, and insists for human responsibility and moral duties towards the land, the sustaining mother earth, which is abused, ransacked of its wealth, and ignored of its intrinsic value. The study attempts to bring together perspectives and values that are important for preserving the rights of the land, and proposes the contour of a land ethic.
