Book Chinese Drugs of Plant Origin

Download or read book Chinese Drugs of Plant Origin written by Weici Tang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 1005 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional Chinese medicine has been used for thousands of years by a large population. It is currently still serving many of the health needs of the Chinese people; and still enjoying their confi dence it is practised in China in parallel with modern Western medical treatment. In addition to scientific organisations dedi cated to modern Western medicine, e. g. the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and various medical schools, a series of parallel institutions have been established in China to promote traditional Chinese medicine, such as the Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine and training institutions. Almost all hospitals in China have a department of traditional medicine. Furthermore, a large number of scientific journals are dedicated to traditional Chinese medicine, covering both experimental and clinical investigations. Medicinal materials constitute a key topic in the treatment of disease according to traditional Chinese medicine. The Chinese Pharmacopoeia (1985 edition) is therefore divided into two sepa rate volumes, Volume I containing traditional Chinese medicinal materials and preparations and Volume II containing pharmaceu tics of Western medicine. The oldest Chinese review of medicinal materials, Shennong Bencao Jing (100-200 A. D. ), covered 365 herbal drugs. The clas sic compilation in this field, Bencao Gangmu (Compendium of Materia Medica), was published in 1578 by Li Shi-zhen and recorded as many as 1898 crude drugs of plant, animal and min eral origin.

Book Bioactive Compounds from Natural Sources

Download or read book Bioactive Compounds from Natural Sources written by Corrado Tringali and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest in obtaining biologically active compounds from natural sources has recently spiked due to their low toxicity, complete biodegradability, availability from renewable sources, and in most cases, low cost. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, Bioactive Compounds from Natural Sources: Isolation, Characterization, and Biological Properties covers general methods and main topics in the research field of bioactive natural products. The book describes general screening methods, modern HPLC hyphenated techniques, and NMR methods in the structural elucidation of compounds and devotes individual chapters to specific topics of research. Surveys on compounds displaying important pharmacological activities are presented in chapters devoted to Mexican medicinal plants, anti-tumor drugs of natural origin, cancer chemopreventive flavonoids, and metabolites displaying anti-HIV, antioxidative, antimalarial, and anti-inflammatory activity. The final chapters are devoted to representative examples of research into marine metabolites: immunomodulating marine glycolipids and surveys of bioactive compounds from marine opisthobranchs and Japanese soft corals. With its focus on modern approaches to the isolation of biologically active natural products, this book encourages interdisciplinary work among chemists, pharmacologists, biologists, botanists, and agronomists with an interest in bioactive natural products.

Book Mechanism of Action of Antieukaryotic and Antiviral Compounds

Download or read book Mechanism of Action of Antieukaryotic and Antiviral Compounds written by Fred E. Hahn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Antibiotics I was published in 1967, the teleological view was held by some that" antibiotics" were substances elaborated by certain microorgan isms for the purpose of competing with other microorganisms for survival in mixed ecological environments. However, not only had J. EHRLICH and his associates shown 15 years earlier that chloramphenicol was produced by Strepto myces venezuelae in cultures of sterilized soils but not in parallel cultures of the same soils which were not sterilized, but operationally, the search for anti cancer antibiotics was actively under way (Antibiotics I reporting on numerous such substances), although the concept of antibiosis could not logically justify such undertakings. This editor hesitates to accept the use of the term "antibiotic" for anti microbial agents of non microbiological origins which is sometimes encountered, but neither does he subscribe to the view that antibiotics are in some fundamental manner different from chemotherapeutic substances of other origins. Modes and mechanisms of action of chemotherapeutic compounds are not systematic functions of their origins nor of the taxonomical position of the target organisms. Consequently, in the selection of topics for Antibiotics III (published in 1975), synthetic drugs and natural products of higher plants (alkaloids) were represented, along with antibiotics in the strict sense of the definition. We now present Antibiotics V, for whose assembly the same selection criteria were applied as for Antibiotics Ill. The aggregate length of the contributions rendered it impractical to place the entire text between the covers of one book.

Book Anticancer Drugs

    Book Details:
  • Author : Garth Powis
  • Publisher : Elsevier Science & Technology
  • Release : 1994
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 532 pages

Download or read book Anticancer Drugs written by Garth Powis and published by Elsevier Science & Technology. This book was released on 1994 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are over 50 clinically approved anticancer drugs, as well as numerous steroidal agents, and in addition there are many new anticancer drugs in various stages of preclinical and clinical development. The anticancer drugs embody a diverse array of chemical structures. The purpose of this two volume publication is to provide a comprehensive review of the metabolism of anticancer drugs. The authors, each expert in their fields, have attempted to emphasize the relation of metabolism to the therapeutic and toxic effects of anticancer drugs, drawing whenever possible on human studies. There is a critical need for new approaches to treating cancer and it is certain that we will see an increasing number of new drugs with exotic chemical structures used for chemotherapy and perhaps chemoprevention. To understand the mechanisms of action of any drug it is important to know how the drug is transformed in the body, either into active metabolites or inactive products to be excreted. With this information the success or failure of a drug in arresting cancer cell growth can be assessed, and perhaps more effective drugs designed. Medical science has taken the first important steps toward controlling cancer. The use and study of current chemotherapeutic drugs has taught us much about how toxic chemicals can be employed to treat human cancer; comprehending the underlying metabolism of these drugs should facilitate even better modalities of treatment for the future.

Book Handbook of Mammalian Metabolism of Plant Compounds 1991

Download or read book Handbook of Mammalian Metabolism of Plant Compounds 1991 written by Ronald R. Scheline and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 868 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Handbook of Mammalian Metabolism of Plant Compounds provides an extensive survey of how mammals metabolize compounds found in higher plants. Information about these compounds is important to researchers in pharmacology, toxicology, medical and natural products chemistry, and food sciences. Although there is plenty of literature about mammalian metabolism of plant compounds, it is scattered, and summaries of specific plant compounds are often difficult to obtain. This book contains 11 chapters discussing the metabolic fate of individual plant compounds grouped according to chemical class. It also features structural formulas of the compounds and their metabolites, including probable pathways of metabolism. This book provides a convenient single-volume reference source that will benefit all researchers requiring this type of information.
