Book A Genealogy of the Verse Novel

Download or read book A Genealogy of the Verse Novel written by Catherine Addison and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2017-11-06 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present age has seen an explosion of verse novels in many parts of the world. Australia is a prolific producer, as are the USA and the UK. Novels in verse have also appeared in Canada, New Zealand, India, South Africa, Jamaica and several other countries. A novel written in verse contradicts theories that distinguish the novel as essentially a prose genre. The boundaries of prose and verse are, however, somewhat fluid. This is especially evident in the case of free verse poetry and the kinds of prose used in many Modernist novels. The contemporary outburst may seem a uniquely Postmodernist flouting of generic boundaries, but, in fact, the verse novel is not new. Its origins reach back to at least the eighteenth century. Byron’s Don Juan, in the early nineteenth century, was an important influence on many later examples. Since its first surge in popularity during the Victorian era, it has never died out, though some fine examples, most of them from the earlier twentieth century, have been neglected or forgotten. This book investigates the status of the verse novel as a genre and traces its mainly English-language history from its beginnings. The discussion will be of interest to genre theorists, prosodists, narratologists and literary historians, as well as readers of verse novels wishing for some background to this apparently new literary phenomenon.

Download or read book Captain John Browning written by Jess Browning and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-04-09 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was converted from color, of a book of the same name, to grey tones April 7, 2016. Captain John Browning was born about 1588 in England, and died about 1662. He allegedly married about the year 1614. Children were George and William in addition to accounts of other children including a Thomas. Sometime around the year 1621, he and his family left England for Virginia where his descendants supposedly established a line of descendants that could be found throughout America. His ancestors go back hundreds of years, primarily in the counties of Gloucestershire and Dorset in England. The interesting thing about him is that there is more speculation and less known about him than of many people in history. This Second Edition is much enlarged and its index contains full names of thousands persons other than Browning as well as subject names. The endnotes reference many of the sources. The Gloucestershire Berkeley family had a large influence on Browning's both in England and Virginia and this work should be viewed as a theory of family history or historical fiction (sometimes hysterical fiction). It is sad that thousands of genealogical records are based on bad information. It is hoped that any citations of this work be done with the proper caveats. Since so little is known about Captain John Browning's private life, a fictional account of his activities is presented in the book "Captain John: From England to Virginia." There is also a fictional account of the private lives of his descendants in the books "Francis', "Caleb," "William T.," and "Jeb."

Book Genealogy of the Brownings in America From 1621 to 1908 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Genealogy of the Brownings in America From 1621 to 1908 Classic Reprint written by Edward Franklin Browning and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-26 with total page 1010 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Genealogy of the Brownings in America From 1621 to 1908 In this age of enlightenment and civilization, no one is without love for his parents, brothers and sisters, or without regard for his near relatives and kins folk; and very few are without esteem and reverence for their ancestors, no mat ter how distant their connection. Among some nations, as for instance the Chinese, this feeling amounts to ancestral worship. It is this respect and interest which has led me to write the genealogy of my own family and of all the Brownings who have come to America, so far as I have been able to ascertain their history. I have also included the genealogy of one of the greatest, if not the greatest of English poets, Robert Browning, who has a world - wide reputation for his learning and poetic genius.
