Book excerpt: Excerpt from Brown Alumni Monthly, Vol. 77: April, 1977 Though not a focal point for the de bate, as its academic neighbors to the north in Cambridge have been for almost a year, Brown University is nonetheless a participant in the genetics controversy. Low-level experiments using recombined dna experiments that are generally thought to pose little or no potential hazard are currently being conducted by Brown molecular biologists. Also, a specially equipped laboratory that will enable University researchers to perform more advanced genetic experiments, those thought to hold at least a moderate potential for risk, is being built on the third floor of the J. Walter Wilson Laboratory on campus. And, in accordance with the guidelines of the National Institutes of Health, Brown has set up a Biohazards Committee to monitor any potentially dangerous investigations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Brown Alumni Monthly, Vol. 77: March, 1977 How to square these definitions with the original intent of the New Curriculum is unclear at the present time. What is clear, however, is that a catch-phrase based on the elimina tion of old norms will not suffice. There is too much room for individual interpretation of what is new and what is old hat. Perhaps Flexible Curriculum would be a suitable interim alternative, as it seems to allow each his own. From a reading of other college campuses, it is also clear that any allusion to currency in the phrase New Curriculum (the new meaning most up-to-date may soon be as dated as last year's hem length. Indeed, if current curricular trends prevail, Brown may wind up with an educational relic. That, anyway, is the message in a front-page New York Times examination of the campus scene. The new is out and the old is back in, as such academic trendsetters as Amherst, Bowdoin, Middlebury, Harvard, and Stanford have tight ened their curricula and started looking for the common base of intellectual discourse that should tie all educated people together. Loosely translated, this means that the newest thing in college curricula is structure, replete with core requirements something that was downright stifling when the New Curriculum did away with it. There are even some who would argue that the New was never really new in the New Curriculum, anyway. Con sider, they say, this set of recommendations once delivered to the Brown Corporation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Brown Alumni Monthly, Vol. 77: October, 1976 Nostrand, is one who has bothered to teach writing in the discouraging seventies. And with good results. Since 1973, more than students at locations as disparate as a high school in Tempe, Arizona, and carnegie-mellon University have learned to express their thoughts on paper using a totally new method of writing instruction he devised with twelve years of re search and the fruitful collaboration of four Brown graduate students and instructors in English. As an added dividend, the Van Nostrand writing course, being offered to larger numbers of Brown students each year, is teaching students to think as they grope for grammar and words. Indeed, to Professor Van Nostrand, Writing is thinking. The alarming thing about the decline in students' ability to write, he says, is not that their grammar is weak or that they don't know how to con struct a decent sentence. It is, rather, that they cannot string sentences together to form a coherent paragraph that completes a process of thought. The degenera tion is in the quality of an idea and in the ability to convey it in writing, he insists. The affliction, which is characterized by rambling, lack of focus, writer con fusion over what he is trying to say, and problems in organization, is becoming prevalent at prestige schools, including Brown. Van Nostrand calls it elite illiteracy. Harvard's professors, who have watched their course in basic English become practically a mini-department, and Stanford's administrators, wholast year saw only 24 percent of the 200 freshmen with the best high school English scores pass their English placement examination, could hardly disagree with the concept of elite illiteracy. The good news is that the benefits anticipated when it was decided to launch the MD. -granting pro gram are increasingly being realized; that through its affiliation with a number of hospitals the medical pro gram already has had a profound impact on the quality of patient care in Rhode Island; that it is greatly ex panding the opportunities for Rhode Islanders to ob tain a medical education; that it is significantly con tributing to the enhancement of Brown's academic pursuits and prestige; and that, contrary to fear widely expressed in the debate which preceded the landmark decision, the medical program is operating in the black and has not become an excessive drain on the Univer sity's general funds. When it voted in March 1972 to extend the medical education program to award the MD. Degree, the Brown Corporation made the decision subject to these conditions.
