Book Affordable Housing Toolkit

Download or read book Affordable Housing Toolkit written by Erika Laux and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Affordable housing, regardless of federal subsidization, is lacking in both quality and quantity. Charlotte, with its wide shortage of affordable living units, exemplifies this issue. Despite these shortcomings, more can be done to help those utilizing the assistance of such residential programs, but a good place to start is the bare minimum: providing a roof. In order to reduce the strain of designing and building affordable housing, a Toolkit has been developed through the cross-examination and analysis of case studies which were accessed as a model to propel the inspiration of this project. The Toolkit defines three infrastructures: housing, economic, and community. These encompass the three areas of life which are necessary for socioeconomic stability and development. Pursuant to each of these infrastructures are the tactics and components recommended to a new or existing affordable housing development. Areas in need of affordable housing should be analyzed for each of these components, and if absent, attempt to amend the missing piece on site. Each infrastructure also lists the desired effects that, if implemented properly, this infrastructure will provide to the users of the development, and the community at large. Evaluation for the potential impacts the Toolkit could produce is demonstrated with the test subject Brookhill Village, a decaying affordable market rate development southwest of Charlotte's Uptown. It is hoped that this Toolkit will inform those in the practice, or in consideration of creating affordable housing, what residents truly need.

Book Places of Their Own

  • Author : Andrew Wiese
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press

Download or read book Places of Their Own written by Andrew Wiese and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-04-24 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Melbenan Drive just west of Atlanta, sunlight falls onto a long row of well-kept lawns. Two dozen homes line the street; behind them wooden decks and living-room windows open onto vast woodland properties. Residents returning from their jobs steer SUVs into long driveways and emerge from their automobiles. They walk to the front doors of their houses past sculptured bushes and flowers in bloom. For most people, this cozy image of suburbia does not immediately evoke images of African Americans. But as this pioneering work demonstrates, the suburbs have provided a home to black residents in increasing numbers for the past hundred years—in the last two decades alone, the numbers have nearly doubled to just under twelve million. Places of Their Own begins a hundred years ago, painting an austere portrait of the conditions that early black residents found in isolated, poor suburbs. Andrew Wiese insists, however, that they moved there by choice, withstanding racism and poverty through efforts to shape the landscape to their own needs. Turning then to the 1950s, Wiese illuminates key differences between black suburbanization in the North and South. He considers how African Americans in the South bargained for separate areas where they could develop their own neighborhoods, while many of their northern counterparts transgressed racial boundaries, settling in historically white communities. Ultimately, Wiese explores how the civil rights movement emboldened black families to purchase homes in the suburbs with increased vigor, and how the passage of civil rights legislation helped pave the way for today's black middle class. Tracing the precise contours of black migration to the suburbs over the course of the whole last century and across the entire United States, Places of Their Own will be a foundational book for anyone interested in the African American experience or the role of race and class in the making of America's suburbs. Winner of the 2005 John G. Cawelti Book Award from the American Culture Association. Winner of the 2005 Award for Best Book in North American Urban History from the Urban History Association.

Book First Ladies

    Book Details:
  • Author : Betty Caroli
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2010-07-15
  • ISBN : 0199752826
  • Pages : 495 pages

Download or read book First Ladies written by Betty Caroli and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-07-15 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Betty Boyd Caroli's engrossing and informative First Ladies is both a captivating read and an essential resource for anyone interested in the role of America's First Ladies. This expanded and updated fourth edition includes Laura Bush's tenure, Hillary Clinton's 2008 presidential bid, and an in-depth look at Michelle Obama, one of the most charismatic and appealing First Ladies in recent history. Covering all forty-one women from Martha Washington to Michelle Obama and including the daughters, daughters-in-law, and sisters of presidents who sometimes served as First Ladies, Caroli explores each woman's background, marriage, and accomplishments and failures in office. This remarkably diverse lot included Abigail Adams, whose "remember the ladies" became a twentieth-century feminist refrain; Jane Pierce, who prayed her husband would lose the election; Helen Taft, who insisted on living in the White House, although her husband would have preferred a judgeship; Eleanor Roosevelt, who epitomized the politically involved First Lady; and Pat Nixon, who perfected what some have called "the robot image." They ranged in age from early 20s to late 60s; some received superb educations for their time, while others had little or no schooling. Including the courageous and adventurous, the emotionally unstable, the ambitious, and the reserved, these women often did not fit the traditional expectations of a presidential helpmate. Here then is an engaging portrait of how each First Lady changed the role and how the role changed in response to American culture. These women left remarkably complete records, and their stories offer us a window through which to view not only this particular sorority of women, but also American women in general. "Impressive...Caroli's profiles and observations of American first ladies and their relationship to the media are intelligent and perceptive." --Philadelphia Inquirer
